We live in Rhode Island...

I grew up in Sag Harbor, DH in New Jersey

IF we could afford to in Long Island, we would be there in a HEARTBEAT!!!!!

I miss living in Long Islans just about every day of my life...we have no family here..but we went to college here, met here, have jobs here....

Someday we will be back in Long Island...I cannot imagine rasing a family without being closer to our families...

Re: Those not in New York....

Heck no. I am very happy where I am.

I grew up in Bethpage (Plainedge) and went to Catholic Schools and then attended John Jay for college. Even though I miss the City I don't miss LI too much.

Since our wedding in 2002 we have lived in Pensacola, Florida, Corpus Christi, Texas, Little Rock, Arkansas and now Navarre Beach, Florida.

We were able to purchase our first home (new construction) at 24, paid off school loans and are able to afford to start our family. I'm 21 weeks pregnant right now!

The main thing I miss about back home was the beach but now we are 5 miles from the Gulf.

And luckily Long Island has gotten so expensive that I run into Long Islanders all the time down here.

Also luckily airlines like Airtran have made it very easily to visit family so no real complaints.

I love my parents, my inlaws and family but my 'little family' is most important and we have so much better of a life down here in our opinion.

I grew up on LI, DH grew up in Argentina and Staten Island. Currently, we live in Dublin Ireland and we miss home so much. We are returning home in June and I can't wait to be back in NY. I don't plan on leaving again anytime soon.

I grew up in Valley STream and Stony Brook, NY, DH in Oakdale, NY and now we are down in Georgia, about 30 miles North of Atlanta.

The ONLY thing we miss are our friends and family. Life down here is SO much easier for us as newlyweds and just in general. The people are friendlier, things are cheaper, pace of life is slower....all things we wanted. DH sister and her family are also down here, they moved 4 years ago and they love it too.

You couldn't pay us enough money to go back to living in NY....we'll visit all the time, but we'll never go back to living there.

I'm from smithtown, long island, DH is from central Islip. We moved to southern California (suburb of L.A.) a little over 4 months ago.

I miss my friends and family, and I miss NYC but I don't miss Long Island all that much. I miss snow!

We will most likely be staying here as DH's job is what moved us out here. I'm still adjusting because it's very different out here but I do like it so far!! I don't think I ever would live on LI again.

I grew up in Smithtown, FH in Coram and we're going to school in VA right now. We'll probably stay in VA, though we will probably move closer to DC than where we currently are.

As much as I love LI and love being able to just hop a train to NYC I just can't deal with all the people and traffic. Plus, being a teacher, I feel it would be much eaiser to get a teaching job there than on NY (one of the counties that we're looking at is opening several schools every years since its growing so quickly).

Re: Those not in New York....

Well, we're still in NY, but we're moving to Delaware in a month, so I figured I'd put in my two cents.

I grew up in the Danbury, CT, area, FH is from Merrick. We met in college. Honestly, I can't WAIT to get out of NY. We can't afford anything, our car insurance is through the roof so we can only afford one car payment and have to share our car, and well, it really is different on Long Island than it is other places. My old job had me dealing with people a lot, and it drove me NUTS how people would ask me a question and then interrupt me while I was trying to answer!!!!!

So, I guess I'm saying that I miss CT (NEVER thought I'd say that when I was growing up), and I won't miss NY when we move. Here's hoping Delaware is going to be right in the middle.

Re: Those not in New York....

I grew up in Baldwin and moved to Saint Louis about 1.5 years ago because DH was here. What I miss? My family really. I miss NYC sometimes but I am 100% happy with my decision to move here. The standard of living in 1000 times better, the cost of living is lower and I make $9K more than I did in NY. Living in the midwest was an adjustment but I would rather raise a family here than in LI.

I grew up in Lindenhurst, DH in Mastic, we have been living in CT for the last 4 1/2 years. I miss LI sometimes because of my tight family, my brother is up here in CT but not being able to eat dinner at grandma's on sundays bothers me sometimes.
Would I go back? Ehh 50/50, it's way too expensive, overcrowded and traffic is HORRIBLE! We currently live in New Haven county and the sales tax is lower, the roads are less congested and it's beautiful.
I miss my parents the most, but I have a feeling they are moving up here in a couple years because my brother and I will be married and staying in CT. They have already expressed how expensive LI is getting and they want to be in arms reach of their grandchildren.

LI is only a 2 hr drive away, so when I am missing grandma's meatballs terribly, I can get my fix

Re: Those not in New York....

My parents moved us from LI to CT as a result of job relocation when I was in elementary school. About 20 minutes east of Danbury.

At the beginning it was nice- my parents bought their house on Long Island for $66k and sold it for $172k. In turn we had a very nice house built in CT. Unfortunately all of our family is on LI.

It got old really fast. Two-three hour tripes (once over 4 hours on a holiday) back and fourth. And my parents didn't think too much about it the first few years. Then my grandmother fell ill and eventually died soonafter, and during that time my mother was back and fourth two three times a week.

Anyway long story short - over 15 years later - my parents have had enough. Everytime we turn around we're all in the car for a wedding, baptism, or funeral. They miss the beach and the ability to get a train to the city. Its beautiful in CT, but the priority changed to being close to family.

Funny enough, I ended up meeting FH (from Long Island) when I was in college up in Massachusetts. Guess it was just meant to be.

DH and I both grew up on LI, we now live in VA, right outside DC. DH is finishing up law school here, but we will stay in the area after he graduates this spring. I like it down here and I think DH and I will have more opportunities here in terms of work and owning a house, but I definitely miss my family up in NY.

Although it is not too far, it is different and not as crowded as NY - I love living in NJ . We are even considering a move to NC someday.

My sentiments exactly! Both DH and I are originally from LI, and our families are still here... as much as we miss them, we love our new life in Charlotte. There's just so much more for us here, and our families realize that.

Grew up in Great Neck (unfortunately), but moved to Philadelphia over 8 years ago. Do I miss LI? Not LI itself, but my family and my friends (yes, that's YOU Matron!), absolutely!!!!!

I grew up in Oceanside, FH went to college on LI, and now we both live in VA, just outside of DC.

Its expensive here, but not as bad as LI. I only miss my friends and family.

Re: Those not in New York....

I grew up and lived in Brooklyn for 31 years. DH grew up in Queens and moved into my apt in Brooklyn. 6 months after we were married we moved to PA.

We are both happy that we made this move and don't regret it one bit. My sister moved here about 7 years ago and my mom and my other sister about 1 year ago. All of my other family moved out of Brooklyn too. I was the last one of my friends to leave Brooklyn and the majority of them moved to NJ.

My DH's friends all still live in LI...and he sees them almost every weekend...either they come out to see us or we go in to see them...it's only an hour and 45 min drive.

ETA...I don't miss NY one bit because I can go there any time I want so there's really nothing to miss...except for a few places to eat that I wish I could just go to whenever I want.

I didn't know there were so many of you down here in VA! We should have a GTG

I grew up in East Meadow and DH is from Alabama. We live in Northern VA.
I would love it if we could move to Long Island. I miss home so much .
DH and I don't really like it here in Northern VA. It's expensive and the traffic stinks (people drive like idiots too!!!)
We're going to move within the next couple of years; probably to either Colorado Springs or Atlanta, where we can afford a house!
