Those of you that make over 200,000 combined . . .

How old are you?

if your ages are far apart, vote for the age of the person that makes the larger salary

DH and I are both 29, so technically, we're still in the 20's category.
I am an attorney, but my DH is an entertainment production rigger and he makes more than me!!! We will be just a little over 200k this year, but it doesn't go very far where we live in southern California.

We make well over $200,000 and are in our mid 30s.

I voted 30's since I am 29 about to be 30 and DH is 35.

A lot depends on career choice. At 23 out of college my first job paid $75K a year plus bonus that is now at $105K plus bonus.

You can't really take a job for money though you have ot be happy with what you do. If you get to have both even better. Like my DH loves his work and makes great money.

Can I ask what you started out doing out of college?

we are close but b/c of my salary. im 25 but in a very niche field. trust me- even 200k/year is not enough to buy any good house or anything. i have to save alot. you should see the little shack were buying in a good area. we are like the poor people on the block. the house needs alot of work.

Me and DH make around $130k together and have a nice house. It's not a shack at all.

I know--honestly I think it has little to do with education, though the average salary for those with Masters and Doctorates will be higher than those without. I'm working on a doctorate after finishing my masters last year, and most of my friends working on PhDs want to either be permanent researchers or teach college--and neither pays that well!

I agree - I'll defend my Phd dissertation in about a month and the tenure track college teaching jobs that are currently being advertised have a starting salary in the mid thirties to mid forties. . . and the jobs require that you have a Phd and 3-5 years college teaching experience.

Being a professor is great - but dont do it if you want to make a lot of money!

I have to agree, money is not everything if you HATE your job. My dh and I make 'nothing' compared to everyone else on this board, it seems but we have a house and 2 kids.
I don't think money can necessarily make you happy but it does help. If you never struggle, you can never appreciate the money when you do have it.

Re: jobs that make over six figures:

IT jobs, programmer/developer positions in particular. This is what I do, and I make six figures. DH was also a developer although he's more in management now, and makes more than twice what I do (but he's a few years older than me)

And hardly anyone we know in the field has a master's. It really is a good field if you stop with just a bachelor's degree.

Am I the ONLY one that completely does not understand how someone can say they make over $200K, yet still complains that it's NOT ENOUGH!!!!???????????????

that is true- my DH has a Masters in that field , but only because his BS was in psychology & he wanted to switch feilds.

No, you are not alone!! How can you complain making that much???!! I guess when you figure how much my dh and I make combined, I find that to be sooo good!! I have been at my job 10 years and you would laugh how much I make. Both my dh and I don't have college degrees so I KNOW that makes a difference but then, we don't have any student loans either.

MrsERod Posted:

Re: Those of you that make over 200,000 combined . . .

In those cases where there are astronomical student loans to pay back, then I can understand why it may feel like its not enough.....
But where there are no loans to pay back, and you STILL can't afford to buy a house, PLUS you make over $200k, then I say in those cases, maybe a financial planner is needed!

That's true, but my brother is graduating from an ivy league law school about $150,000 in debt, but got a job out of it making $150,000 to start...He'll have all his loans paid off in 2 years of working, even paying $$ in rent, etc. It pays if the job at the end pays well, but I know people graduating from Touro law who are now working at the mall, unable to get law jobs, and still have to pay back the loans...

We're 25 and 28. We worked very hard to get where we are. Especially DH.

I so need a new job! I have worked hard too & dh went back to school & everything & we make under $90,000 combined & we are 28 & 29.
(fortunately he's a good saver!)

DH and I both only have our BA's. What helped us are the connections we made and networking in our industry. We made reputations for ourselves in industry societies and guilds and made friends with the right people who helped us along.

Did you switch jobs, too? I think being with the same company for 7 years is really what is holding me back. The raises are ok, but I started so low, it doesn't really add up to much now.

I think that will help DH too, b/c there is definitely room to grow in IT, but he just switched fields so this is his first job in that field & it is in a hospital b/c he worked in a different dept there & did use a personal connection to get this job.

We have not switched fields. But I have company hopped to get ahead. I have had 4 hops in 5 years.
