How old are you?
if your ages are far apart, vote for the age of the person that makes the larger salary

Ok, I just finished skimming thru the 9 pages. What happened to this thread? When I posted in the beginning, it was just about what careers you could get into to make six figures. This was one of the only posts I could really relate to:
My DH and I could live in a much bigger, fancier house but we choose not too. My DH does not and never will drive new cars, he doesn't believe in them. I have a car that I bought new and once we were married DH paid it off. I am sure it will be the last brand new car that I get, it was a total waste of money. I went to trade it in and realized what a loss I took as soon as I drove it off the lot.
Sure sometimes I envy fancier houses and more expensive cars but knowing I can be home with my baby is a priority. We choose to pay our CC bill every month and have a budget so that we can be rid of our student loans ASAP and then that money will go toward savings and paying our mortgage off early.
Like I said in a previous post no one would look at my DH and I and think we make 'alot' of money. For us our salaries are for security not for show. Again to each his own.3/20/05
This is my lifestyle exactly. DH and I own one paid-off car (we both work in the city, so no big need for two cars), and own a house in Carle Place. Nothing special, but a nice house in a nice neighborhood that we bought as a starter, but could see ourselves staying in long-term. Over the three years we've been in it, we've put a lot of extra money down on the mortgage, whenever one of us got a bonus or we had saved a sum of money. We live purely on DH's base salary and save my entire salary, and either invest or pay extra on mortgage with his bonuses and the profit from his stock options.
Like Monkeybride, I don't want to work in the future once I have a baby-- we're TTC now so it's something I needed to decide. So for us, we thought it was better to live on one income from day one, instead of having to make lifestyle sacrifices down the road when I stop working. And by saving DH's bonuses and such, I think it's nice that he doesn't have to feel pressured to make X amount of money his whole life-- maybe one day he'll decide to switch careers into something lower-paying... you never know! He puts enough pressure on himself, I wouldn't want him to feel even more burdened.
I totally don't understand the one-upmanship on this thread surrounding who lives (or can afford to live) in the better neighborhood, who has the most cars and 'toys', etc. Wealth is defined by what you save, not by what you spend.
