Umm I believe the key is to pay off your credit on and not CANCEL the card. That is what MAKES your credit score go up. Not paying DUMB finance charges.

I think that some people perceive bragging about money and possession as being obnoxious. And I find the 'you are where you are' comment offensive too- just because someone does not feel the need to spend lots of money on 'toys' doe not mean that they are in a lesser place. I consider myself and my DH successful- we are good at what we do, are respected for it, have no consumer debt and yet we don't make close to $200k. And that's fine.

That's what I was trying to say....but you said it so much better!

I could swear I read that you DIDN'T make 200,000 a year. Also in your first post didn't you name the 5 cars 8 timeshares house 2000.00 pocketbooks and 3000.00 watches. But you don't like pointing?

ETA: this thread is 7 pages long im not going to read through sorry!

Re: Those of you that make over 200,000 combined . . .

I think its safe to say that people can get approved for a mortgage that is usually more than they can techinically afford and can have as many 'things' as they want it's just a matter of how much they choose to spend vs. save and how much debt they are willing to carry and I don't mean just CC debt. Some don't care about a 400K mortgage if they can live in 'the best' place. Everyone's priorities are different.

Most people (not all) can get approved for 2 new cars, a pretty nice size mortgage and lots of CC's it's just a matter of how many of us choose to use all the resources given to us to have 'things' and put our debt at it's max.

My DH and I could live in a much bigger, fancier house but we choose not too. My DH does not and never will drive new cars, he doesn't believe in them. I have a car that I bought new and once we were married DH paid it off. I am sure it will be the last brand new car that I get, it was a total waste of money. I went to trade it in and realized what a loss I took as soon as I drove it off the lot.

Sure sometimes I envy fancier houses and more expensive cars but knowing I can be home with my baby is a priority. We choose to pay our CC bill every month and have a budget so that we can be rid of our student loans ASAP and then that money will go toward savings and paying our mortgage off early.

I think it has become the American way to have debt and keep up with the Jones' but a lot of us are getting smart to this and realizing it's not the way to get ahead and that having peace of mind, security and a good realtionship matter a lot more. Believe me I was guilty of the 'thing' obsession but I matured and met my DH and I am happier know knowing we never have to worry about paying a bill and we have a safe emergency cushion and are on our way to being debt free.

Like I said in a previous post no one would look at my DH and I and think we make 'alot' of money. For us our salaries are for security not for show. Again to each his own.

I agree- I have been talking to mortage people and one person told me that we could qualify for a lot more, which astounded me (I put our take-home pay on the form, not what we get before taxes) because we really feel that we will be stretched tight.

I'm aspiring to be like my SIL and her husband- they live very frugally but are very well off. They have a staggering amount of money saved for college for their two kids (which I only know because DH and I will be their guardians). I want the security of money in the bank, and I also think we've become the instant gratifiation generation- we don't want to wait for things (not all of us, of course).

You arent making yourself clear. They way you are talking it sounds like you aren't pointing you are using them as examples but then you say you have all those so that is like pointing out what you have??? NO???

I'm still baffled as to how you plan to afford living in Huntington Bay.

north of the harbor club is huntington bay?

can you clarify (streets/roads)?

i am baffled as to where in the bay you are looking to purchase.

eta: the only homes in the huntington bay under 1M are in bay hills. although it is a nice area, it is not the true 'bay'

Maybe we should battle who has a bigger and better diamond next
I wonder if Bri had any idea what this thread would turn into when she posted.

Re: Those of you that make over 200,000 combined . . .

I think the problem here is that we all have our own ways of 'living' and 'spending' and 'saving' and we all have a different perspective on what is 'upscale,' 'rich' etc. For some, it is having 'toys' and LV bags. For me, it is about a lot more than that. My only point was that it is very sad that $200,000 does not go all that far in the NY Metro area given the cost of living and taxes. Yes, obviously, there are ways to make it work - live outside the immediate vicinity and commute etc. That was not my point.

I'm kind of shocked at how this thread turned out myself. I don't know what's going on, but it's a CRAZY night tonight.
