Those of you that make over 200,000 combined . . .

Original post by BriBri529

How old are you?

if your ages are far apart, vote for the age of the person that makes the larger salary

I voted 30's since I am 29 about to be 30 and DH is 35.

A lot depends on career choice. At 23 out of college my first job paid $75K a year plus bonus that is now at $105K plus bonus.

You can't really take a job for money though you have ot be happy with what you do. If you get to have both even better. Like my DH loves his work and makes great money.

ok people...point me in the 'right' sales position, bacause i need to make more money, pronto!

seriously tho...who is in sales that can answer this? is there any company who would hire someone without experience, but they see the 'it' quality in them?

So what jobs for those in their 20s pay over $100,000 without advanced degrees (base salaries here, not bonus or commission?). I have a lot of friends in vet school/dental school/med school who WILL be making that, but not at the moment in their mid-twenties....I'm especially interested in the 22 year old making over 200,000?

CPA's....there are a lot more professions than we may think that make 6 figures.

I added this on the other topic too.
Here is a link that I use for research for statistical earnings. Towards the middle it has it by age group (25-35), by race, and educational attainment and by sex. For our calculation purposes we use for most cases say,
35 year old male, non-hispanic white, full-time all year round. If you scroll over to the median earnings for bachelor's degree, masters, etc. we take that number and then add a 20% adjustment for NY since it is a national survey. That will give you an idea of earnings, without taking into consideration what type of job they have.

Me and FH make well over $200,000 and we are both 28. Neither of us have advanced degrees. My husband is in the financial world and i am in administration.

However living on LI i feel like we just make enough! I seriously don't know how some of my friends do it who are cops and firefighters with wives that are SAHM. I give them a lot of credit.

All of my students make over 100k individually when they graduate with an MS (3-semester program). Most are in their mid-twenties.

Yes, certain fields will hire you without experience. Keep in mind, you don't make a lot at first but you can eventually make a very good living... such jobs are brokers of any kind, pharmacuticals sales, etc. A lot of sales jobs are commission based so it is up to you how much you want to make.

I was in a sales position that paid a base of $52k plus commission- which took me to about $100k/year. It was great to make that money- i was young and it was great (this was during the dot com boom)...

I could've 'held out' for a job like this once I got laid off- but I began to realize money isn't everything.

I felt equally as 'poor' making $100k a year as I do now, making half of that... and I actually feel a lot happier now.

I would like to say it's a function of me getting older and maturing, but I really don't know.

I am happy I learned the lesson though- if i didn't get laid off I probably never would've realized that you can't buy happiness.

just my two cents.

We're 25 and 28. We worked very hard to get where we are. Especially DH.

No way will it buy I mansion, but I know people on here making under $100,000 combined who managed to buy homes. Not in the ideal areas, and certainly not huge homes, but homes none the less.

We make about $200k combined and have a home. You absolutely do not need to make this much to buy a house. It depends on what you are looking for. Most people want to live like rock stars but can't afford to because of debt and frivolous spending.

ETA: I am 29 and he is 30

CPA's....there are a lot more professions than we may think that make 6 figures.

Young advertising execs (my brother makes a fortune),

Bankers, investors and others in finance,

Attorneys (though not all),

Dont forget people with a trade - electricians, plumbers etc the list is endless.

Unfortunately I don't fall undr any of those categories. I am counting on Mega millions.

Delusions are a b*tch!!!

I know--honestly I think it has little to do with education, though the average salary for those with Masters and Doctorates will be higher than those without. I'm working on a doctorate after finishing my masters last year, and most of my friends working on PhDs want to either be permanent researchers or teach college--and neither pays that well!

I tend to agree. It is better to make under $100,000 and OWN something than to make twice that and have nothing to show for it. It is just a question of building equity at whateveer level possible. JMO. It isnt the case for me, but eventually, it will happen. I simply have to increase my earning potential.

i should have said in a popular area. we are buying in stamford ct which is 43 minutes to the city via express train and next ot greenwich. its a very popular area right now. but even on LI, i mean you really have alot of $ for taxes and stuff. plus furniture. i just find it so expensive! im going to be house poor for a while...
eta - its definitely doable- but i was just trying to put into persepctive that 200k is not as much as it sounds.esp after getting raped by taxes and stuff

DH and I both only have our BA's. What helped us are the connections we made and networking in our industry. We made reputations for ourselves in industry societies and guilds and made friends with the right people who helped us along.

Did you switch jobs, too? I think being with the same company for 7 years is really what is holding me back. The raises are ok, but I started so low, it doesn't really add up to much now.

I think that will help DH too, b/c there is definitely room to grow in IT, but he just switched fields so this is his first job in that field & it is in a hospital b/c he worked in a different dept there & did use a personal connection to get this job.
