You should try a havanese! They're bred to be companion dogs and they're small and fluffy but not so small that your FH will feel like less of a man walking him/her (yes this was a requirement of my FH). I think Ollie is full grown now and she is 12 lbs and so friggin cute people stop on the street to gawk at her, and she eats it up. Here she is sending an e-mail

i second this! my havanese lola is the best!!! they come in all colors too.

We went to a pet store. We didn't know any better. Never again. LUCKILY our dog didn't have anything serious but I have heard HORROR stories about the place we bought him. He is a purebred Pitbull.

We bought all three of our dogs from breeders. 2 in oregon and 1 from NY. What type of puppy do you want? I can recommend a great Shih Tzu breeder.

A yorkie or a westie. I want a small fluffy dog. So many of my friends have shih tzu so I want to be different lol

We just got our Yorkie, Bella yesterday!! She's a munchkin. We got her from a pet store in East Meadow..it's called International Kennel Club. They had a bunch...

I agree! We just rescued our purebred chihuahua from a rescue...he's just over a year and a great addition to our home. I also checked shelter after shelter and there were tons of purebred doggies just waiting for a good home! Good luck!

This was in newsday today!

North Shore has 100 dogs from West Virginia mill

Man's best friend wants you -- for a new best friend.

More than 100 dogs rescued last month from a puppy-breeding mill in West Virginia go up for adoption Wednesday at the North Shore Animal League America rescue shelter in Port Washington.

The dogs -- aged 1-to-10 years old, the bulk of them in the 5-to-6-year-old range -- were among the estimated 1,000 rescued Aug. 23 from the Whispering Oaks Kennel in Parkersburg, W. Va. Authorities and officials from the Humane Society of the United States took the dogs, who had spent almost their entire lives in cages, from the property -- after the owner, whose name was not released, agreed to sign documents 'barring her from ever operating another breeding facility,' according to the Humane Society and local law enforcement.

The North Shore Animal League dispatched two mobile rescue units to West Virginia and brought more than 100 of the dogs to Long Island. And what a wide range of dogs there are to adopt: Dachshunds, Shih-Tzus, Cocker Spaniels and unique Chinese Cresteds, according to shelter spokeswoman Devera Lynn.

'We have everything,' Lynn said. 'They're really adorable. They're really cute dogs.'

The dachshunds come in all shapes and colors, Lynn said. There are brown ones, black-and-white ones, mixed-color ones, longhair and short-haired ones. Some even have freckles, Lynn said.

Would-be adopters will be asked to spend some time with adoption counselors, Lynn said. Fees are about $200 for purebred adoptions, less for mixed-breed adoptions.

The fee covers vaccinations, spaying or neutering of the dogs and medical expenses -- and is used to defer rescue costs incurred by the shelter.

The rescued dogs are not the only animals available for adoption at North Shore. About 300-400 dogs and cats are available at any time, Lynn said. Would-be adopters can go online and meet some of the animals up for adoption.

The Web site is www.nsalamerica.org.

Thanks for all the info! All the puppies are ADORABLE! I heard about the rescue from the WV mill, but unfortunately we can't get a dog now. We have to wait until after the wedding.

Re: Those that have purebreed dogs

We've bought out older dog from a pet store in Queens, and then we mated her and kept three of her puppies

I will say this though, I was in the city with my sister last week and of course you cant walk past a pet store without looking in. We went inside and were holding a couple of dogs. The guy told us what you get when you buy a dog there:

- a beeper number of a 24 hour vet
- lifetime training for whatever you want
- life insurance, and when your animal passes away, they give you one for free whenever you are ready for a new one

I think thats a pretty good deal

My adorable lil Maltese guy (I have a morkie girl too), I got from Petite Pets, I've known the place for years now & love them. My dog is related to my MIL dog (greatgrandparents), which is nice to have a dog with lineage you can trace. He is a trip

here he is: (but he needed a haircut in them, he looks like a marshmallow)
