Those that have purebreed dogs

Where did you get your dog? Since my bday is after the wedding I'm telling FH I want a puppy!

i got mine from a breeder im missouri - dont think she breeds anymore though.....Pum came on a plane and we picked her up at the airport - it was like waiting for a baby to be born

we got ours from a pet store in queens- that was before we knew any better. but my old roommate actually got a purebred recently at north shore

Awwwwww. My friend did something like this and her puppy was from a mill! She had no clue until she got the dog. Thankfully he turned out okay! The place seemed legit. I'm so weary about these places unless I can drive to it.

How did you find the breeder? I see stuff in the local papers and online, but how do I know if what they give me is right?

My friend did too! I know you can get lucky there sometimes.

Yeah its hard to find a reputable breeder. Asking your local vet is how we found our dog. Here is a good website to read.

i think you are probably better off driving to the breeder so you can check it out - after i got pumpkin i started chatting on a forum like this (but its only about shar peis ) and some other breeders told me that my dogs breeder was shady and that she had bred and sold some aggressive dogs - (now shar peis actually share the same reputation that pit bulls do and they used to be fighting dogs back in the day and dogs with bad temperments should never be bred) - but anyways, my dog pumpkin is psychotic and is very aggressive toward other animals - probably from bad breeding - i also had another shar pei that was from a breeder in oregon (long story, from my ex) that my parents took to florida with them - she is VERY sweet, gets along with animals and was raised with pumpkin - they just have two totally different personalities....so i think its best to go to the place and check things out, as well see the other adult dogs in place....i got pumpkin when i was 18 and even though i did research i wasnt able to physically go to missouri - and i only found the shar pei forum AFTER i bought her.....i wouldnt trade her for anything BUT next time around i would rather be able to visit the breeder - thats my tidbit for the day

Pumpkin is so cute!!! Thanks for the info. I've never had a dog so this is all new to me. FH had a purebred lhasa apso but he got it from a neighbor or something when he was 4 or 5. After this dog died they got another one but from North Shore. I want either a yorkie or a westie and want to start the research now so I can get the dog on my bday

I go to that store a lot just to window shop!

I wanted to buy a mini dauchsund so bad. But I didn't want to go to the petstores because usually htey are alot more $$

so i checked online to see if there were any breeders around LI. But i came across the website puppyfind.com (i think that was it) where there are breeders who sell their dogs on that site. And my mini dachshund Gunner came from Oklahoma they flew him out here and I loved going through the website. I got his papers and I spoke with the breeders on the phone and htey asked me about my background to make sure he was given to a loving family. And they sent me pictures up until they were able to send him to me at 8 weeks. I bought him at 4 weeks but they couldn't take him from his mother that young

Great experience. And my mom just bought a chavalier King charles from that website as well and had the same great experience. And they are both such GREAT dogs

maybe you can check see if there are any up for adoption.....next time we get a dog im not sure where we will get it from, i keep saying we should adopt one BUT part of me wants to go through a breeder again - even though i didnt have the greatest experience i like so many breeds though that im sure if i went to adopt id find something adoreable....you may be able to find a yorkie/westie/pomerian puppy at the shelter....we had an american eskimo for 8 years, he was the family dog, he was amazing, best dog ever, he just shed a lot and needed to always be brushed, but they are REALLY cute too
