thoughts of paying vendors beforehand

Original post by tbone66

Our wedding is in 47 days and I am thinking of paying some of our vendors in full at our final meetings. I want to try to minimize the amount of money that we have to deal with on the day of the wedding.

We would pay off the rabbi, the band and hair/makeup person.

What are your thoughts?

DH and I did this--we paid off all major contracts, including tip, about two weeks beforehand. Yes, it was risky, but ultimately we didn't want to be carrying a ton of cash (the form most of the vendors required) the day of the wedding. Also, in the end we did trust our vendors, as a lot of them came from this site. All worked out well and we didn't perceive lower quality service than if we had held off.

Getting married the same day and I am definitely paying my vendors the day of (other than the photog who has to be paid by Sept. 13th and the RH which gets paid the week before (including the tips for everone at hall, I am going to bring with me when I drop everything off the day before). I just feel more comfortable that they will do the best job that way.

I personally wouldnt. I dont want to take a chance of them not showing. I would put the $ in marked envelopes and give them to a BP member to handle.

I agree

i know ppl don't think you should pay the vendors beforehand--but we basically paid all vendors by the week of the wedding

the only vendors that were paid that day were the hair / makeup ppl...otherwise everyone was paid

to be honest i don't get the whole 'what if they don't show up' on the big day. umm...why did you book these ppl in the first place??? cause you trust their services and have a contract with them. they are professionals--and i made sure i knew their work and track record before i booked. if i was worried that paying them in full before the wedding was going to mean they weren't showing up---then i shouldn't have booked them in the first place.

but again--that's JMO. we paid everyone in full---and they all showed up not only on time, but even EARLY. it was great!

I'm absolutely paying whomever I can in advance. The DJ requires it, and the hall requires full payment the Wednesday before. Tips will be given at the end of the night, by someone else.

I think its a great idea, and I might do this as well.. But I plan to do this the week before... just to make things easy..

To be honest - it's not worth it to pay them up front.

If you have the $$$ to shell out now - sit down, make the envelopes w/the remaining balances and the gratuities. On the day of, designate someone - DOC, groomsman, etc. to distribute the envelopes.

I cannot stress how many times I've seen vendors slacking off b/c they had absolutely no motivation on the day of, and brides/grooms were simply not happy. It's sad, but it's true.

I had a vendor this weekend who's equipment did not work - so for the ceremony - no music, for the beginning of the CH & Reception - no music. Guess what? - They were paid in full! When it came to the end of the night to request a refund...we were greeted with a look of question...now it's a huge process!!!!

thats crazy! I never thought of this!! maybe i should re-think this... hmmm

We paid all of our vendor's beforehand. We didn't want to deal with the hassle the day of the wedding. Everyone showed up - we had no problems. At this point, you've been dealing with your vendors for quite sometime... I say, go with your gut. If you feel they are reliable, then you shouldn't have a problem. Just make sure you have a written contract and get a receipt for paying in full and you should be fine.
