Thoughts on a Memorial Day Weekend Wedding?

Original post by gigglebride

Hi! My FI and I have to make our final decision by Wednesday morning and it is a doosie. We've been trying to decide between Watermill in Smithtown and the Estate at East Wind... (http://www.liweddings.com/chat/topic.aspx?ID=507341&Reload=11050) ... and it is SUCH a tough choice!!! We even went back to see both of them again yesterday, which unfortunately didn't make the decision any easier! I've heard great things about both, and each one has its pros and cons. Believe it or not even though the decor is different at each place, I still love both. I think the decision right now will come down to date options. EW has Saturday 5/23/09 available which is the Saturday of Memorial Day Weekend, and we both have a ton of guests coming from out of town. Watermill has Saturday 5/30/09 (the weekend after MDW) available.

How do guests feel about holiday weekend weddings? Good? Bad? I need help!! :)

memorial day weekend I think would be the better choice it gives your guest an extra day

It will definitely be more expensive for your guests to travel on Memorial Day Weekend ... and those driving will probably hit more traffic too.

On the other hand, I happen to really like holiday weekend weddings. My wedding was the Saturday of Veterans Day weekend ... but because its not a bit 'travel' holiday, I don't think it was too bad for our guests.

We have gone to weddings for Memorial Day weekend, July 4th weekend, Labor Day weekend, Columbus Day weekend.

As long as you send Save the Dates in advance, those who want to be there to celebrate with you will be there.

Those who would rather go to a BBQ or the beach, well ... you'll know where their priorities are.

I was given the choice of a holiday weekend wedding but I came to realize that the rates for hotels are significantly higher than on a non holiday weekend. But I am getting married on the North Fork so there are very limited hotels so they can 'jack up' prices!

You should check with local hotels to see how much it would be on a regular weekend vs. a holiday weekend!

I personally have to split holidays between my family and FH's family because they live far away...I have to say I'm a bit unhappy with holiday weddings/any other occasions because of that. Sorry gals.

I'm getting married the Saturday of memorial day weekend at East Winds too. A lot of people who i've told think it's a great idea...especially people from out of town since they feel like they don't need to rush as much...hope this helps :)

We are strongly thinking of this. It's great becuase it allows OOT guests more time to travel and be with family, and for us it allows us to have our wedding ona Suanday (FH is JewsiH) while still being convenient

I think it depends on your family. Find out if those you know you REALLY want to attend the wedding are able to make it on that holiday weekend.
If the price is right and it works for you, I think a holiday weekend is great, especially for OOT guests!

my wedding was the Sunday of Labor Day weekend, as far as I could tell it wasn't a problem for my guests, especially since we sent out save the dates 7 months prior so no one would make vacation plans.

FH's brother got married memorial day weekend last year. The only bad thing about a holiday weekend is that travel is annoying for OOT guests. There can be lots of traffic for those driving and jacked up prices for those flying.

I think it's a good idea, especially for OOT guests, they don't have to worry about rushing back cause most people will be off

I am answering truthfully but I hate holiday weekend weddings. I always find that selfish. I like to go away or do traditions. I go but I miss out on family and friend things for a wedding. I am sorry just not a big fan!

I think that although a holiday weekend wedding might be convenient for some people...it will also Not be convenient for others. Like people who have certain plans ahead of time or family traditions they do every year? I know my family has a family reunion type thingy in NJ the weekend of Mem Day every year. A holiday weekend wedding can be a little annoying for some ... I have a friend who has a wedding coming up this Mem Day weekend & she is pulling her hair out over it!!!!

Just think about if you are willing to have people not be able to come because of other things going on.

We were shocked at our wedding, which was not on a holiday weekend, at how many people who we 'knew' would not miss our wedding, actually had other stuff to do! its crazy!

I'm not saying rule out the holiday weekend, no matter what...but if you are totally torn, it might help you make your decision? having people there that you REALLY want to be there is a great boost to have your wedding on May 30th where there is a better chance of more people you care about being there?

JMO! Good luck with your decision! Whatever you choose, it will be GREAT!

I am getting married on the Sunday of Memorial Day Weekend. This is what I have always wanted. If the people you invite care about you and want to spend that special day with you then they will make it a point to be there. If not it's there loss and they are obeviously not great people. I learned not to revolve my wedding around other people. This is your special day no one elses. I have OOT that I am inviting that are family and if they can't make it that is there problem. If its what you and your FH want go for it. Don't do anything to accomodate other people. I have learned a very valuable lesson. With enough notice there should be no reason for people not to attend. Free food and drink why would you miss it. Just my point of view. No hard feeling to anyone else.

As a guest, I don't like it. It's a pain to travel, I like doing my own thing on 3 day holiday weekends, its expensive to travel, etc.

I’m getting married Sunday @ 6pm on Memorial Day weekend. I think an evening wedding is better cus’ there may be less traffic. Plus, all our family is in the tri-state area so they don’t have to worry about hotels. If we had folks who had to stay in hotels, then we would’ve reconsidered cus’ the holiday weekend is very costly.

I wouldnt mind a wedding on the Sat or Sun (or even Friday night) But last year we had a wedding to go to ON MEMORIAL DAY! That was terrible...it was a night wedding and I had work the next day...I would do it the weekend after because if there are a lot of oot guests the airfaire would be cheaper

I don't think you should have a problem.
