Thoughts on a Memorial Day Weekend Wedding?

Thoughts on a Memorial Day Weekend Wedding?

Hi! My FI and I have to make our final decision by Wednesday morning and it is a doosie. We've been trying to decide between Watermill in Smithtown and the Estate at East Wind... (http://www.liweddings.com/chat/topic.aspx?ID=507341&Reload=11050) ... and it is SUCH a tough choice!!! We even went back to see both of them again yesterday, which unfortunately didn't make the decision any easier! I've heard great things about both, and each one has its pros and cons. Believe it or not even though the decor is different at each place, I still love both. I think the decision right now will come down to date options. EW has Saturday 5/23/09 available which is the Saturday of Memorial Day Weekend, and we both have a ton of guests coming from out of town. Watermill has Saturday 5/30/09 (the weekend after MDW) available.

How do guests feel about holiday weekend weddings? Good? Bad? I need help!! :)

i am going to one this memorial day on Sunday. Find no issues with it since i am off the next day so we can party it up.

I woudl prefer a holiday wknd weddign as it gives extra day to travel and then guest can really make plans to stay over, spend the holiday wknd with u and your FH at your wedding.

i would just send STD a year before since it is a holiday wknd and many have the same mem day wknd plans year to year.

We're doign columbus day wknd

My wedding is the Saturday of Columbus Day weekend. Since it's a Saturday, I don't think it matters as much as it would if it were a Sunday wedding. I'm sure OOT guests will appreciate the extra day to unwind.

memorial day weekend is one of those weekends that is iffy to me.....a lot of people have their own plans for memorial day and labor day....im not against the idea and i would do a weekend like columbus day in heartbeat because less people celebrate that 3 day weekend - i think it matters on the crowd - for the most part you know your guests and you'll have an idea of what the majority of them do for the holiday - if your family and friends dont typically plan getaways and parties for that weekend then i think its a good idea and will help out your OOT guests....i would attend a memorial day weekend with no problem and it wouldnt bother me

another thing to keep in mind is that hotels and airfare will be more expensive due to the holiday.

We are getting married on the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend. We are comfortable with our choice. We know most of our guests don't make vacation plans for that weekend...Also we couldn't afford a Saturday night wedding and this would be the closest thing. We plan to send STD's a year in advance to give our guests a heads up.

One of my closest friends got married on Memorial Day weekend last year & although we always go camping with friends that weekend we skipped it and it didnt bother us in the least to change our usual plans for something so important

i am getting married the sunday of columbus day weekend & a lot of our out of town guests said it was better for traveling- they had more time to spend here.

My experience is that people are usually mixed on this subject. Some like the idea of a wedding on a holiday weekend, but I know people who get annoyed because it prevents them from going away or making other plans.

I personally dont mind either way.

To be honest, unless it's a really close friend or family member, I probably wouldn't go if it was Memorial Weekend.

I am a guest at a memorial day weekend this year. at first we were a bit annoyed, because it was a great 3-day weekend and we could have taken a short vacation somewhere or relaxed at home, but since we have to fly across the country for it we actually like the idea because we have time to enjoy the area out there and we won't get home totally exhausted.

I'm getting married the Sat of Labor Day weekend. I had one friend get married the Sat of Memorial Day weekend and another friend got married the Sat of Thanksgiving.

I don't have a problem going to weddings holiday weekends if I can, but I certainly won't rearrange my schedule to attend the wedding if I already have something else planned.

I know some people are annoyed with bride and grooms who plan their wedding on a long holiday weekend, but I really don't have a problem with it or with anyone who wants to do this either. The way I see it, is the people who realllly wanna be there and support you guys, won't even allow it to bother them that it's a vacation holiday cut short. They would much rather be there to celebrate with you guys.

Re: Thoughts on a Memorial Day Weekend Wedding?

My wedding was the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend and no one complained.
One of the main reasons we did it was because DH's family is from OOT and this way it gave them time to travel here and back.
People told me they actually liked it because they had their whole saturday and then when they got home from the wedding on sunday they still had another day off.
If someone is annoyed, then let them be. If their three day weekend is more important to them than your wedding, then you don't want them there anyway.

I was a labor day weekend bride and had no issues at all. In fact, people loved the extra day to travel!

I think that if you have a lot of OOT guests, Memorial Day would be the better choice. It allows for some more time to travel and visit.

Just to add, I would have no problem going to a wedding on a holiday weekend either.

I am doing the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend. I choose this because FH is in the Marine Corps and everyone has to travel on his side. I also have a wedding this year on Memorial Day weekend. I dont mind either way. Some people make their wedding two weeks before Christmas as well, and everyone is broke then. Don't worry about anyone else, if they dont come then its their loss.

I'm also getting married next Memorial day on a Sunday. I wanted to have it on a Sunday because of the costs but I also wanted people coming from out of town or even around the tri state area to be able to enjoy themselves and not worry about work the next day. My FIL's did not approve but they came around eventually. I just sent out my save the dates today. I would suggest sending them out early to get the date out there. If people know that far in advance you should have no problems. Good Luck!!
