I consider myself to have formed an online realtionship with many of you
With that said.... Is it me or has anyone else noticed that its the weddings that spent $$$$$ that get considered to be the best wedding ever but the ones that did not cost as much $$ or at lesser known places dont get the same raves.
This is not a personal attack or anything...just an observation, not only from myself but from other members who some of us havent even realized are not posting as frequently anymore...
I really htink that its time we all realize that its not the place, the flowers or anything like that that make a wedding beautiful. When u look at the pictures..are the guests smiling or is it just a pretty room...seriously...what do you think makes a wedding beautiful?
P>S I am not trying to start an argument or anything..just curious...I have gotten alot of FMS and just wanted to feel out some of my fellow brides & B2B's!

Re: Time for LIW brides to be honest
I kind of flipped through and skipped the drama, b/c I can';t sit and read ten pages all at once. Anyway, i think EVERYONE is going to answer this question and say 'it's about the bride and groom and their love and happiness and ahving family around, etc.' But those same brides are the ones who will be like 'oh that's cheap' or 'that place had horrible service'. So it IS ultimately about the love of the couple, but that doens't stop people from being catty and taking $$ out of the envelope if they palce isn't that nice. I'm not saying everyone does that, cause that's disgusting, but we all look at each other's weddings and gwosn and places and decide there are things we don't like, that make us unhappy... like my previous drama-filled post about the veg. wedding. I mean if it's really about me and FH and our love, no one should give a **** if I serve all veggie food or like, all cheerios, but they do care.
That having been said, one of the best weddings I've ever been to was SOOOO inexpensive. There wasn't really much of a cocktail hour, just cheeses and crackers, and we missed that..but the wedding was beautiful and it reflected the B&G's simple tastes.
ETA: To respond to some of the drama, I can't spend a lot on my wedding, but I sitll know it will be as beautiful as a $1M wedding. Still, if I could afford it, I'd get married at Oheka or even Disney World. Not because I think showing off is more important than me and FH. I don't even want to show off. Those are just palces that I think are especially beautiful. And if Oheka were $35 a head, I'd still want to get married there, b/c it's not about the money it's about what's beautiful and meaningful to you. Some brides DO like to show off, but I don't think having an expensive wedding makes one a showoff. I live right near Russo's and when peopel say they're gettign married there there are always comments of 'show off' etc..and it's WAY out of my price range, and to me not worht it b/c it's not my style, but it IS a beautiful place and I've heard the food is amazing, so if that kind of setting is your taste and you can afford it, why NOT go there? If people are going to act jealous and catty they don't belong at your wedding. you could have a $2000 wedding and you know what. half of your frineds would still be ejaous anyway b/c you're gettign married and they aren't.

Re: Time for LIW brides to be honest
Ok, ir ead some more..and I have some more to say (as usual)
Umm..Myasmon NEVER scolded ANYONE. If she mentioned her FM's, it seemed to me that she was just trying to voice something that concerned her and that had been on other people's minds. She NEVER EVER said anything bad about people who spend a lot of $$ on their weddings.
Also, if you think the post is so useless and pointless, DON'T POST. Like we all said, none of us reply to eveyr post we read. If you think it's stupid or pointless, just ignore it like you ignore the ones about a hall that's not yours or a dress you don't like.
I think people are entitled to their opinions, but I also think that sometimes someone has to stand up and say 'what's going on here?' Because this board isn't equally friendly to all people. simple fact. There's a previaling opinion about everything from where to get a dress to what phogotrpahers to use, what food to serve at a wedding, what favors should be like, etc. It's just the way it is. And if someone is proposing a way for us to all be more fair, and more supportive of each other as we all calim to be, then I think it's great.

Re: Time for LIW brides to be honest
Oops found the post so I am including it here
This is what I would call a 'deep reflection', so set aside a little time to read.
I think that everyone is entitled to have the wedding of their dreams (lots of money spent or none at all) and no one should be judged because of it. HOWEVER, there is a culture about weddings in general (not just on this board )where people tend to give greater attention or place greater value upon what appears to be more lavish or expensive.
For example, there was a post started yesterday where some people were making fun of Upstate New York weddings because people did not have the lavish cocktail hours or menus that you are more likely to see here on LI. As I read the thread, I thought those were very petty comments. Why even start a post like that? Maybe small cocktail hours is how they do weddings upstate or maybe that is what that couple could afford. Not eveyone can do things the way we do it on LI.
So, my point is that when it comes to weddings, people (subconsciously or not)always make comparisons although they also love to emphasize the 'intrinsic' importance of the wedding day or the love between the bride and groom. And we all do it regardless of how much money we spend on our weddings. We all get caught up in the details. Personally, I can't be upset if someone wants to spend $50, 000 and I want to spend $10. And I can't hate on any of you either if you would prefer to read about a wedding at a castle or a mansion instead of reading about my wedding at Verdi's, which is quite simply a family owned catering hall. Heck, that is absolutely your right. That's just part of the culture of weddings. Some people are fortunate enough to have money for the all details, and others like me--Well hey, I can only afford a fraction of those details. In my opinion, it doesn't mean my day means any less, but I do think there are some people who do think so and quite frankly that's a shame. And sometimes it is more than evident on these boards.
Which leads me to my next point : I think that myasmom's point was more of a philosophical one: Why does it have to be that way if it's really and truly about the ceremony?
I found the post valuable, because I learned something from the brides who raise the point of how painful it is when others think that they are bragging or that their wedding is more fluff than substance when they have an expensive wedding. SO some of us think people devalue our weddings when we don't spend as much money as others, but for others, their experience is devalued, when they are criticized for spending more than what others think they should. To be honest, coming from my background and experience, I never thought of that. So thank you ladies for raising that point.
To whomever, said you shouldn't give a 'flying' F*&$#' about what people think about your wedding. She's absolutely right. But, I think for lots of folks it's hard when it comes to their weddings. It's not necessarily about insecurities or about coveting what other have but maybe just wanting others to see appreciate how important you day is for you.
And so, when my wedding day does come, if you want to humor me a little bit and make me feel like a princess on the boards, feel free to check out my review! If not, that's cool too! It's all good.
One love,
Lanikai

Re: Time for LIW brides to be honest
I think (although I didn't read thru all 4 pages of this thread) that love is the center of a marriage and details are the center of a good wedding. If the couple is truly happy that makes for a really beautiful ceremony very often, because it is touching and heartfelt. When it comes to the actual wedding it is not the cost of the items but the thought put behind the items that makes it great. So there are brides who spend $40K on a plain jane no one cares wedding and there are brides who spend $10K on a great wedding.
