Tip Jar- RP from BHB

Original post by Kimbalina

I saw a question about having out the tip jar out at the wedding reception and I never thought about. But do you think there should be a Tip jar on the bar even if you are having an open bar?

The bartenders get paid sh1t.

I've never been to a wedding and not seen one.

Guests are going to tip them regardless if there is a tip jar or not.

I hear you guys...I personally just think a tip jar is not necessary at an event like this. I know certain guests will tip regardless...I just think its kinda tacky (sorry) FH and I plan on giving each bartender around $150...Plus what they make...I don't think its too shabby. I worked in catering for about 4 years too. I think most bartenders would be happy with that.

...again...just my personal opinion...its like an a$$hole...everyone has one...

I am glad that you are able to understand my point!!!
P.S I have an A$$hole tooooo!

Okay...Okay...I may be out numbered on this one. Maybe I am micro managing as Tilde says...Thats what I love about this site...always gives me something to think about!

Hey Kim...I hope my post didn't come across as being rude...NOT my intention at all...and maybe I'm just paranoid...but...I was trying to be funny with the a$$hole part...but when I re-read your post...I took it as if I offended you...PLEASE know that was not my intention!!! I hate how things come across in writing sometimes...you can never detect someones tone...sorry if I offended...If I'm being paranoid...then just ignore me.

NO WAY!!! I know that you are not being rude! I was aggreeing wit you

Cool!!!! Very Cool!!! Glad its just me being my normal paranoid self!

Wait, I thought the 20% gratuity that is added on covered the wait staff and bartenders tips. Is that not the case?

no- that is to pay the wait staff their $8- $10/hr. and the bartenders their $4.25/hour. I think the maitre'd may get like .25 - .50 cents per plate of that also.

I had no idea that came out of the gratuity.

It shouldn't be called a gratuity then!!!

Yeah...its unfortunate! I worked at Miller Place Inn like 10 years ago and they tell the clients 20% gratuity is added onto the bill for the staff...however...regular waitstaff was paid $10ph...nothing extra...bartenders like $6ph...nothing extra...The Maitre'd and assistant Maitre'd received like an extra $400 and $200, respectively.

Yeah, it does stink.

I totally understand your point, BTW. We just feel differently about the whole situation!!!

Dont get me wrong... I want them to BE tipped! I worked in food service- I know it is necessity,, but I thought they were tipped out of that 'gratuity'

Well...my experience is from 10 years ago with one catering hall. It could be different at your hall. I'm guessing they (RH) think because they pay their staff well...more than a resturaunt would pay...they consider that extra amount a 'gratuity'!?! I honestly dunno...just guessing.

Guests tip the service themselves. Fh and I paid for the wedding why should i pay to tip them? I am not made of money IoI

Only exception is the bridal attendant and maitre d because I realize I should tip them.

Every wedding I have gone to I have tipped the valet and the bar tender the only exception was at Land's End which had no tip jar which annoyed me because it put me in a uncomfortable position of not tipping and not knowing if they got paid extra to serve guests. I agree tip jars are good.

i think its ok too...some places the bartenders only work on tips...or they are paid very low. They need those tips. I have never been to a wedding where there wasnt one!

I told them not to put a tip jar out and had it written into the contract--i will tip the bartendars at the end. I don't want my guest to pay for anything, and usually people don't have singles in their pocket and so they spend a lot of money because they have no choice. I really am against tip jars

no way jose! I will take care of the tips for coat room, bar, bathroom and waitstaff! I don't want my guests paying for a thing. There isn't much you can do about valet...so I'll leave that one alone.

Just my opinion...obviously!

even when there is no tip jar, i still tip them...one time they didnt have one out and i was like AHHH where is it, so i just put it on the bar.

I agree. Plus they really dont make alot and some will say but why did i pay 18 or 20%, that doesnt go towards their tips. And yeah i already just posted before, if a tip jar is not out i am still tipping them. And people who dont want to tip dont have to or many just send someone else to get drinks for them

Every time we go to a wedding we make sure that we have small bills for tips. IMO, the way I see it, they're a bartender just like a regular bar, I wouldn't get a drink at a regular bar and not tip, and I wouldn't do it at a wedding!
