Tip Jar- RP from BHB

Original post by Kimbalina

I saw a question about having out the tip jar out at the wedding reception and I never thought about. But do you think there should be a Tip jar on the bar even if you are having an open bar?

Dont get me wrong... I want them to BE tipped! I worked in food service- I know it is necessity,, but I thought they were tipped out of that 'gratuity'

No they're not tipped out of gratuity...the gratuity actually covers EVERYONES salary, and as many know bartenders and servers get a low salary, gratuity also includes other services the RH is providing for you...

Wait, I thought the 20% gratuity that is added on covered the wait staff and bartenders tips. Is that not the case?

no- that is to pay the wait staff their $8- $10/hr. and the bartenders their $4.25/hour. I think the maitre'd may get like .25 - .50 cents per plate of that also.

I had no idea that came out of the gratuity.

It shouldn't be called a gratuity then!!!

thats why many call it a service charge now instead of gratuity

The bartenders get paid sh1t.

I've never been to a wedding and not seen one.

Guests are going to tip them regardless if there is a tip jar or not.

I agree. Plus they really dont make alot and some will say but why did i pay 18 or 20%, that doesnt go towards their tips. And yeah i already just posted before, if a tip jar is not out i am still tipping them. And people who dont want to tip dont have to or many just send someone else to get drinks for them

Every time we go to a wedding we make sure that we have small bills for tips. IMO, the way I see it, they're a bartender just like a regular bar, I wouldn't get a drink at a regular bar and not tip, and I wouldn't do it at a wedding!

im just going to wait until you post to say i agree lol, its gonna make it easier on me lol...But i agree with everything you're saying.

LOL!!!

I usually always tip at a wedding. FH and I went to our friends wedding last year and we tipped our waiter $10 for about 3 rounds of drinks. but then we were dancing and just going to the bar ourselves. but we did tip the bartender as well.

At our wedding we will definitely tip our bartender. But learning from our e-party our bartender made a killing that night. So I don't know how much I will be tipping our bartender at the wedding. At our e-party our families tipped him very well and he didnt have a tip jar or anything. But then at the end of the night we tipped him as well. And my dad even said to me 'Catie you gave the bartender almost 350$ in tips that night' since we gave him $150 for bartending at the party so definitely will be discussing how much we should tip at the wedding.

Bartenders at RHs get like $4.25 and hour. I know a ot of RHs dont allow a tip jar or even for them to place their own dollar at the bar to kick off tips, but it is how they make $.

FH is a captain at a RH and fills in sometimes as a bartender. If his manager sees a tip starting dollar on FHs bar, the manager takes it- haha

I always tip at a wedding and will be tipping the bartenders and waiters in adition to the maitre'd at my own wedding.

I dont think its a problem for guests to tip at a wedding if they want to. I think most people do it anyway...in our families anyway.

This is what my RH does. There is no tip jar out. The banquet manager told me he will take $$ away if he sees it on the bar - he is not really against them being tipped, but he doesn't want guests to think they have to tip, and some bartenders will leave the money out there, he said, in order to encourage it - so my BM said that if they want the money they better take it as soon as it's down or he will take it from them. I think this is a bit harsh, but I agree that my guests should not have to pay the bartenders at my wedding. They are my guests. I will tip the bartenders myself. They are giving me a gift, sometimes (often times) buying a new outfit to come to my wedding, etc ... they should't have to tip. If they want to, go ahead - but I do not feel they should be encouraged.

thats a bit harsh, honestly i would hope he doesn't do that in front of guests because i would notice that more than a tip jar being out and personally i would get VERY annoyed if i tip the bartender and i see someone snatch their money away...not everyone see's it as an obligation to tip, i do it bc i want to and like i said ill tip even if a tip jar, glass or whatever is not out

Isnt there a tip jar/or cup that the bartender or RH puts on the bar and who ever wants to leave a tip does????

Are there really people out there that don't tip the bartender at weddings?

I mean, I guess this is an entirely different issue. . . but FH and I usually tip like $10 the first drink than $1/$2 every drink after that

Then if he went above and beyond (remembering drinks etc) we will give another $10 at the end of the night

i know most people don't follow this, but really - are there people out there NOT tipping AT LEAST $1 every drink?

I want people to make their money.. but if I am providing a tip.. should a jar still be available?

no!! if you are tipping them then their is no reason for your guests to. i think it`s ruse that h=the bartender/RH would do that. it`s like your tip isn`t going to be good enough! these people came here (with gifts) to see you and FH no need to tip.

and i`m getting my infor from an inside source! he was breaking it down for me at my e-party. (my photographer is a good friend of the fam) now if you aren`t planning on tipping then it might be a diffrent story but you need to readin the contract if gratuity is included and who it is for

gratuity is NEVER used for tips, it is used to cover EVERYONE's salaries which for bartender is $4.25 an hour and other services provided to you by the RH, i think alot of ppl get confused what the gratuity really is for...and me tipping has nothing to do with me not thinking the bride & groom will tip, i just ALWAYS tip a bartender regardless of where i am and dont feel comfortable if I don't. Its my own personal choice and im tipping regardless if theres a tip jar out or not.

I agree TOTALLY!!!

FH and I always give like $10-$15 with our 1st drinks and then tip $1-$2 each drink after.. at the end of the night if he's cool we usually give another $20

I didn't know this wasn't the norm hahaha

Re: Tip Jar- RP from BHB

I had a few friends complain about weddings they went to that had tip jars out, they thought it was tacky, they are not cheap people and do tip bartendars, with that said, i am not rich and am paying for this wedding by myself--I think a few extra tips to the bartendar at the end of the night in the grand scheme of things isn't that big of a deal and it will be a nice gesture to my guests that beside the travel/hotel/new outfit ot tux rental/shower gift and wedding gift they don't have to pay for a thing at my wedding.

However, we are all different and we each have special touches for our weddings, so this really isn't a big deal either way.

id rather not have a tip jar. if people want to tip which im sure they will thats fine. i'll also give the bartender a nice tip at the end of the night
