OK...I know there are a million posts on tipping but let's get it all in one place.
SO far I have:
Maitre D ($2.00 -$3.00 pp at the wedding. Seems outrageous to me but if that's waht's appropriate then OK) Photographer - $25.00 (seems low) Videographer ($25.00) Hair (20%) Make-Up (20%) Attendant (?) Clergy ($50.00 for what I don't know) Florist Delivery people ($10.00 each) Band ($20 each)
I don't have limos so that's why I didn't add that. Am I missing anything?

Re: Tipping for Dummies
Is the banquet managers tip included with the gratuity price? I don't know if it is.....I think that tip is reserved for wait staff.

Re: Tipping for Dummies
My Hall said that we are only to tip the Maitre D if we were happy with the service. the 8.5 % gratuity goes to the staff then the Maitre D gets extra if we feel he/she deserves it. Sounds fishy to me.

Re: Tipping for Dummies
If the person doing your hair and makeup works for themself, do you tip? The keep all the money you pay them anyway? What's the etiquette on this?

Re: Tipping for Dummies
I've dont a lot of research on this and this is what we came up with. Please note that these are estimated tips and as I have read 'All tips are based on service':
Maitre D $2.00 (per person) Wait Staff $20 (each) Valet Parking $1.00 (per car - seems outrageous because every will tip them on their own!!!) Photographer $50.00 Videographer $50.00 Hair 20% Make-Up 20% Florist $50.00 Band $125 ($25 each memeber) Clergy $100-150 Limo $25 Shuttle Bus Driver $25
I'm looking at an additional $1000 EASY
I know I forgot people, who did I forget....
AND HERE IS ANOTHER QUESTION:
Do you tip them BEFORE or after their services???

I may change but

Re: Tipping for Dummies
this post makes me angry. the whole tipping thing is a really sore subject with me. Let me remind you of the following ladies-
A tip is not mandatory. Give what you feel is deserved. As for the maitre D getting $2-$3 per person, that is absolutely ridiclous. The only way that I would tip anyone that kind of money is if he personally seated each and every one of my guests, pulled out the chairs for the ladies, cut their meat and fed them. Other than that, nobody is going to get a $450 tip from me. it is an abosoultely insane amount of money to give anyone and isn't in convenient that the catering hall makes this recommendation.

Re: Tipping for Dummies
Tara...I agree with you on this 100%...I didn't include these numbers in my budget and when I heard I was suppose to tip, my mouth hit the floor.
I guess I am afraid of poor service or being cheap if I don't tip. My catering hall actually told me that I am suppose to tip the maitre'd.
DOES ANYONE KNOW: are you suppose to tip before or after the services?

Re: Tipping for Dummies
I also agree Tara. If I tip Maitre D' $2 per person, he is getting over 400 bucks. That seems crazy What is he doing, I would like to know, that he deserves a $400 tip?
I also think tho' that $25 is way to low for the photographer and videographer. They are sooo important. They should get more than the limo driver. They deserve it more than the Maitre D' if you ask me.

Re: Tipping for Dummies
I agree with all of you. the Maitre Ds tip seems outrageous and I thought $25 was low for photo and video. (but the owner of my photog is a friend of my moms so I am lucky) Guess I better budget another $1000.
Booked the honeymoon this evening so I am wacked out about money. Aruba here we come Radisson Aruba executive suite...10 nights Sat night, (tomorrow) we are off the the Crescent Beach to plan the menu. Also, my bridesmaids dresses came in to RK today!! It was almost too much for one day!!!

Re: Tipping for Dummies
IMO I think what is expected from a bridal couple to tip is total out of hand. I plan corporate meetings, and have been doing so for too long to mention. I have NEVER seen tips like what you all are mentioning. But what is sad, is that you are correct in that is what is expected of us. When I run a three day meeting for 200pp my entire gratuity budget is only $1000. A wedding is just one meal. Just part of the 'put the word wedding on it and double/triple the cost'! Sorry, but this makes me very angry as well.
My catering manager, who will not be with me on the actual day has already mentioned that he expects a tip (putting his boys through college....they aren't even past kindergarten yet!). Then I have to tip the day of person as well. Another bride warned me about him, but I thought oh no, I'm a planner and he would never say that to me...........

Re: Tipping for Dummies
by the way, my ex worked as a maitre d at a very upscale catering hall and would come home with upwards of $600 a night. i always thought that it was insane and he used to comment on how stupid people were. he used to be like 'i probably did about $100 worth of work and got $600, who is better than me?'. Now that I am on the other side of it, i think its sad.
