I know the maitre'd gets $2-3 pp but do you give this before or after the wedding? I thought after but I heard that you can give them something before to make sure they have incentive to do a good job.

No actually you want to give it after because it will insure they do a good job. If you give them the money before hand they already have the money/tip...why bother working for it.

I agree - I will be giving them the tips at the end of the night once they've worked for it.

I didnt budget that in - and didnt think of it!! Gotta see whats including with the 18% gratuity!!

All catering hall staff like waitstaff, valet, etc.

EXCEPT...Maitre D and Bridal Attendent.
You're expected to tip them in addition to the 18%.

Tipping is a BIG expense. Some GREAT advice we rec'd from these boards was to...
tip in cash, do NOT seal the envelopes. The amount you budget for may not necessarily be the amount they end up getting at the end of the night. Our DJs messed up...we took money out of their envelopes and popped it into our photographers who did an excellent job and we felt deserved the extra money.

This might be a dumb question so I apologize in advance but what if the photographers are the owners? do you still tip or not?

If the photographer is the owner I don't think they expect a tip but you should tip his/her assistant.

I believe It's usually 2-4% of the total catering cost, 4% meaning the person did an outstanding job! But I might have to look it up on an etiquette book, I'm not 100% on the percentage it might be 2-5%....

Re: tipping the Maitre D?

I've worked in a few halls on the Island and my sis worked at one for a number of years. Do not take the hall at its word when it tells you that the gratuity/service charge goes to the staff. Because at the halls I've worked at, this was a common statement and we didn't see a penny aside from our hourly rate (which is not that large). So, if you really want to know, ask the staff - seriously, sounds crazy, but ask a few on your next visit, ask them if they receive tips or just their salary from the hall.

Also, don't forget about the regular waitstaff - everyone forgets about them and they are also busting their butts getting your hall ready and making sure its clean and keeping your guests happy.

I can't wait til my wedding when I can finally tip the staff what they deserve!! I know how hard of a job it is.
