Tipping the Maitre D??

Tipping the Maitre D??

Sorry for bombarding the boards this morning!!!

Getting married in 2 1/2 weeks! And I got tons of questions now!!!

How much are you tipping the Maitre D at your wedding?

ETA: Someone brought up a good ? Do you tip waiters/waitresses too? Or does the Maitre D tip out?

The RH told me btw $600-$1000
Is that absurd?!

I was thinking more like $400. And I believe that's what she originally told me.. that's what I had that number stuck in my head..otherwise I never would have known.

What are you going to tip? Have you asked your RH what the norm is?

Thanks!!!!!

Re: Tipping the Maitre D??

My BM told you can give nothing or whatever you like, standard tip between avg 400- 1000, depending how many people are invited. If the person does a horrible job, then we shall see if he gets the tip, hope this help

My RH says between $3 and $5/pp, but I think that's ridiculous. I'll probably tip about $300-$400.

I say just grace him with your presences is enough.....

Just Kidding...I was thinking between 600-700--it's supposed to be like $$ per each guest or something

really pp?? I don't think she ever told me that.. my mom said we should tip him $600.. I think I'm just shocked they make so much $$ in one day. Makes me want to become a maitre d!!!

Re: Tipping the Maitre D??

our RH said $3-5 pp... so we figured the minimum tip would have to be $450

Remember that is only twice a week! And sometimes they get stiffed! I hear $3-5 pp, is the norm, but for me it will really depend on how the day goes, FH and I are generous tippers for those who put the effort in!

Umm..

HUH??

Do you tip the waitress/ waiters/ bussers?

I dont get it. What is the Matrie D' doing to deserve such a large amount of money? Arent they paid by the Reception Hall?
Seriously.. Im confused with this.

I have been responsible for trowing our annual Christmas party.. we have upwards of 400 people and I pay in advance. I have never tipped a Matrie D.. I dont even know if we had one..LOL!!!! I mean.. we had a person that was in charge for the day.. .. but thats their job.???
People tipped the bartenders on their own.. but we didnt / dont tip the waiters etc..

Ive never heard this.

Re: Tipping the Maitre D??

Our BM at our RH told us it was usually $3-5 pp tip for the Maitre 'D...

We'll have 100-125 guests so we'll calculate based on that.

On a side note, while the waitstaff is already tipped with the 'gratuity/service fee' that you pay when you book, the Maitre'd, bar tenders, etc etc are not. So the maitre'd actually splits what he gets with a few people on that day.

I agree that it all adds up though! geesh!

Shouldnt the Maitre D be tipped out of the pool like everyone else?

Im sorry..but from what I see... the waitstaff works harder than anyone and if Im going to give an 'extra' $600 bucks, it should go to them, or in a pool at least.

JMO of course...

We did about $700 and we had 135 people. The bridal attendant was great so I just gave her cash separate from the rest of the tips.

Just a word of caution, see how your hall handles tips, when they want them, etc. Our wedding went until 12:30 AM and our banquet manager was there but wanted to leave at 10:30. He pulls my new husband off the dance floor and demands the tips from him!!!!!!

My mom went over to see what was going on and DH was saying no way, we're not giving tips until the end of the night. Well they got in a big argument and took it to the bridal suite and our banquet manager actually cursed at my mom and brand new husband in the middle of our wedding! Francesca stepped in at some point and begged them not to tell me because I was having so much fun dancing but in my mind Terrace on the Park did a great job but it all went down the drain when the 2 most important people to me in the whole world were treated so poorly. Sorry to vent in this thread but I feel like all of it could have been avoided if we had clarified with them exactly how they were going to do it.

Oh, also, they originally told me to bring all the tips on Thursday, the night of our rehearsal dinner and 2 FULL DAYS before the wedding! We told them no shot.

OMG that would NEVER EVER FLY!!!!! My mom would freakin crush em and spit em out!!
I would have said I guess you can pick your tip up tomorrow since your leaving before the reception is over. I will have my BM write it down on the contract that tips are to be given out at the end of the night. So sorry that happened to you! What balls they have to pull him off the floor!

Re: Tipping the Maitre D??

Well from prior experience from working at a catering hall the famous fee that they charge every bride 'Tax&Gratuity' really does not go to the waiting staff. So if your waiters and waitresses do a good job Please tip them and let your family know as well..Because most of the waiters/waitresses the tip is what they count on. As for the Maitre' D they do get paid for the wedding plus the Tip but I feel the tip should be determined by the couple NOT told to by the RH!! The tip should be determined by the Job that they do not just for being there!!!1

I know! I didn't find out until we were in Bermuda but I am going to really get into it in my review. Everytime I sit to write it I get so mad I have to take a breather. We called the manager when we got back but he really couldn't care less.

Re: Tipping the Maitre D??

We were told to tip between $3-5, i think we ended up doing $4 per person. The MD doesn't keep all the money, it gets split with something like 2 other people. The waitresses and bussboys and stuff are included with the hall.

Also you tip your bridal attendent seperately.

I was at first shocked, but if you are lucky and have good people you are dealing with the night of, it totally makes sense to be tipping them like this.
