Tipping the Maitre D??

Original post by AMJA

Sorry for bombarding the boards this morning!!!

Getting married in 2 1/2 weeks! And I got tons of questions now!!!

How much are you tipping the Maitre D at your wedding?

ETA: Someone brought up a good ? Do you tip waiters/waitresses too? Or does the Maitre D tip out?

The RH told me btw $600-$1000
Is that absurd?!

I was thinking more like $400. And I believe that's what she originally told me.. that's what I had that number stuck in my head..otherwise I never would have known.

What are you going to tip? Have you asked your RH what the norm is?

Thanks!!!!!

Most common is to tip per person, our RH told us to tip $3 - $4 per person.

I'm doing $300-$400 for the Maitre D and around $100-$200 for the bridal attendant.

Maitre D is suppose to make the day go smoothly. He is the one that tells the band/dj it is time for the cake...time for this....blah blah. He is suppose to be the coordinator of it all.

Bridal Atten. does your bustle, gets you and FH drinks all night. They should have it in your hands w/o you even asking for another drink.

Our hall suggests $3-5 per person, but stated that it is completely discretionary.

We plan to tip about $500 for 140 people IF the service is excellent. Less if it's not.

And it's cash! I know they only work like 2 days on the weekend. But if they make close to 2k cash on the weekends, that's Daaaamn good!

Well from prior experience from working at a catering hall the famous fee that they charge every bride 'Tax&Gratuity' really does not go to the waiting staff. So if your waiters and waitresses do a good job Please tip them and let your family know as well..Because most of the waiters/waitresses the tip is what they count on. As for the Maitre' D they do get paid for the wedding plus the Tip but I feel the tip should be determined by the couple NOT told to by the RH!! The tip should be determined by the Job that they do not just for being there!!!1

i totally agree. when i worked at a catering hall, the waiters and waitresses never saw a dime of the tip, even though the people giving the tips were under the assumption it was going to the waitstaff. with what i heard, the maitre d's would pool their tips and split it amongst themselves. ever since then, my family and i have always individually tipped our waiter/waitress at a catering hall.

Re: Tipping the Maitre D??

I am going to tip around $4 pp for the Maitre D, and about $150 for the bartender
I believe '20% gratuity' includes the waiters already, I won't tip extra for them unless there is someone is EXTRA nice to us
bridal attendent is about 100-150
and $40 for bathroom lady/man each

but we have to tip the BM??

Re: Tipping the Maitre D??

sorry to crash just thought i would mention this..

my bro used to waiter for weddings at the carlton. Unless you tip the waiters and waitresses individually they will NOT see any of that tip. The Maitre D keeps it all.

The only tips my bro used to get were the occasional ones from the people at the tables who wanted drinks all night.

So where does the 20% gratuity go?

OMG i didnt even see your comment but my parents do that too. at my eparty my parents told the wiat staff upfront that they would be recieving tips individually and not from the maitre D because she knows they never get it.

Re: Tipping the Maitre D??

you would have to ask your hall if what you are paying the maitre D is supposed to include the tips to the staff. if so i would deduct what i would give each waiter/waitress and give him the balance
