Tipping Wait staff

Ok... So I just read something and I am a little perplexed!

Do or Did you tip your waiters at the reception hall???

Isn't that what the 18-20% is for??? Now I am no way in any shape or form cheap when coming to tipping waiters/waitresses... b/c I was one for 5 yrs... but isn't that what the 18-20% is for!?!?!??!

If you did tip or are going to... What is the average?

Nope. That IS what the 18% is for.

My RH is charging us 18% gratuity. They clearly told us it was for the wait staff but not for the Maitre D'. The BM told us it was a our discretion to pay him.

Girls, I truly hate to break it but I have been in the restaurant business for awhile and have never seen the 18% grat given to the wait staff in a catering hall. The staff gets there flat rate and whatever tips the tables give them and that's it. Some halls may be differnent but I have never seen this.

that isnt our problem. we pay 18%, we shouldnt have to pay more b/c of what the catering hall decides. i work in the restaurant industry as well.

Yeah, we were told specifically that the 18% goes towards the wait staff gratuity... we're already spending so much as it is that we just have to take their word for it and hope that the $$$$ goes to the wait staff!!!

i agree, too. I can't afford to pay any more on my RH, especially since they also expect us to give $1200 on top of that the DAY OF for the maitre d, bridal attendant and 2 captains (whatever those are). If I had all the money in the world, I would give more money to the waitstaff and the valet parkers, but I don't - so I can't. I'm just leaving that up to the 18% - and any money my guests may decide to tip them for good service.

I spoke to some of the BMs about this & from what they've told me the 18% is not a 'tip' persay, but it pays the salaries of the waitstaff. He said most of the waiters make $10-15 an hour, rather than the low hurly at a restaurant, so they make more to begin with. I asked him flat out if I should tip-- he said only the maitre d, captains & Bridal attendants- which we can figure an amount- they say between $3-6 per person based on service-- & give that all to the Maitre D & he will tipp out the people under him.

Follow up question.... many people have been telling me to go to the RH the day before & tip the staff then- saying they will give better service if we've taken care of them-- but I keep thinking-- why would they work extra hard for a good tip if it's already in their pocket? I want the best service possible but I'm not sure they best way to go about it.

EXACTLY! A normal waiter makes around $2.50 an hour and then relays mostly on tips... waitstaff in catering halls make $10, 15 if not 20 in some good halls I say it is already included... That is where your 18% is.

i definitely think the 18-20% grat is more than enough for the waitstaff - i waitressed for years and that is where their tips come from -
I have also been to a number of weddings where we as a table of guests will round up some money and give it to our waiter, so that they bring us our drinks, so that is where they can earn some extra cash

I was recently at a wedding where the bartender actually said... 'If you tip me I will make your drinks better for you'

I was like... I was going to tip you anyway but I don't think its necessary for you to actually tell me to tip you.

i used to work at a catering hall and so did DH... we got paid an awesome hourly rate, and also got tipped from the families... usually there were envelopes set up for us...

where DH worked, they got a rate for an entire party, depending on what kind of party it was and didnt receive anything extra...

When I have gone to weddings as a guest, I have usually tipped the bartender and the server for my table myself. especially if they provide good service.

I don't think the B&G should give a tip on top o the 18%.
