I had the flu REALLY bad when I was 5ish. I remember it actually blacking in and out.
Since then most of my doctors say no flu shot. Im fairly healthy and hardly get sick so their idea is if I have some antibodies which have been so far helping me, then they don't want to risk it.
Instead EVERY year im extra careful and clean and watchful of my health since I haven't had the flu shot since 5, I can die from the flu (i think)

Re: Tis the Season for ............ Flu
I have never gotten the flu shot although I've had the flu about three times before. When I start to feel the slightest cold coming on, I take some Echinacea pills pronto

Re: Tis the Season for ............ Flu
I've been getting the flu shot for the last 5 years. I work in a public school where the students come to school very ill and they don't want to go home. So I definitely need it. I have gotten sick in the winters, but never the flu.

Re: Tis the Season for ............ Flu
I've only had the flu one time, about three years ago.
It was HORRIBLE.
But I don't get the flu shot.

Re: Tis the Season for ............ Flu
I had the flu three times in my life.
Once, in fourth grade. temperature soared to 103 degrees and my mother threw me into an ice cold bath after I misread how many fingers she was holding up. I was screaming bloody hell when she made me stay in there and could barely talk due to the sore throat. I had the flu in high school and couldn't walk out of the bed for five days. I slept in my parents large bed and they moved into my room. I was convinced I was dying- this one was the worst. I had the flu most recently on our honeymoon. Yuck!!!! It makes you never say the flu for any mild sicklike symptoms again. In my opinion, there is the flu and then there is THE FLU AND after those experiences, I never throw the word aroundmildly. THE FLU is truly two steps from death as far as I am concerned.
By the way, if you get it get TAMIFLU (an antiviral for the flu) and BEXTRA (for the aches, pains, and jackhammer headaches). Worked like a charm on the HM. UNBELIEVEABLE DRUGS!!! No to the flu shot. Afraid I will get the flu.

Re: Tis the Season for ............ Flu
I actually just had my flu shot today. I've received it for the past few years. I work in healthcare and they highly recommend it. So far my arm is just sore.

Re: Tis the Season for ............ Flu
I 'hear' you're not supposed to get sick anymore from the shot. That they've come a long way in the vaccination process.
Its not getting sick that worries me. It's just the old addage 'If it's not broke, don't fix it'.
I been around 24 years since my last flu attack. I take extra precautions I mean I wash my hands to the point of driness. I wash use a towel to turn off the water then dry my hands and use a towel to open the door to leave the bathroom. I go through tissues for my nose in a hurry since i never use the same one often. I have sanitizer at my desk during the cold/flu season to be extra careful. I try to be discreet so people don't think Im a freak, but it's my health. I wash before I eat and after. I have a tissue for riding the subway cause really I cant just NOT hold on. I NEVER touch my eyes, nose or mouth on the way to work until I've cleaned my hands. And in extra bad times I actually wash my face when I get to work.
Its nearly obessive compulsive behavior, but then again, I am hardly EVER sick. When I am I can fight it off. There really are worse times than others in the year where I go mega careful most of the time it's just the bathroom routine I keep up with through the year. I have allergies so I spend my whole year sniffling and sneezing in intervals the last thing I need is to be 'sick'.

Re: Tis the Season for ............ Flu
I was thinking about it this year, only because of what my sister told me who works in the healthcare industry...
She said, and I know this sounds crazy, that doctors are afraid that SARS is going to make a comeback before the end of the year, and early next year. I guess they have some scientific reason for thinking this. Since the beginning symptoms of SARS are 'flu-like', my sister said to get the flu shot, therefore if (God forbid) I was to get SARS, at least I wouldn't just pass it off as the flu like people have done in the past and I could get treated early.
But I don't know... still haven't made up my mind yet.

I got mine at work... they give them for free (saves them the money when you have to call in sick, I guess). I get one every year b/c I have a low immune system... usually I feel a bit sick-ish the night I get the shot but nothing like the flu!

I can't remember the last time I got the flu - but I don't want it! Every year I go and get my flu shot.

Re: Tis the Season for ............ Flu
I totally believe SARS is here to stay. Things like that don't just disappear.
I HATE it though.. Jim had JUST gotten over a nasty cold when SARS hit the headlines. Being that he's chinese people stepped away from us when he'd sneeze or if I coughed.
