My dad who was from Dublin used to get so offended when people wore orange on St. Pat's. Orange is the color of Protestantism in Ireland, and, the color of the Orange Order, a militant Scots-British organization that celebrates Britain's defeating Catholic Irish armies and ravaging Ireland to annex it to England.

This is the way I understand it too. They actually wear orange on July 12 or 13th too - the day the militant's came in and slaughteres all the Christian/Catholic Irish people. Totally bizarre...

Re: To all my Italian girls...

Sfingi is ZEPOLI ... what you get at bizarres and fairs.

Sfingadelle is a puff pastry in the shape of a clam I guess filled with a ricotta type filling

Hang on, I'm a little confused. The St. Joseph pastry has canoli or custard filling. It is a filled Sfingi? I never thought of them as the same dough/pastry ....

In the middle ages, Sicilians prayed to St. Joseph to end a famine caused by a drought. When their prayers were answered and it rained, the people showed their thanks to St. Joseph by sharing their precious food with the poor.

Thanks!

Hope you had a good day then!

Re: To all my Italian girls...

I just finished my pastry. My mom ate half of hers and tried to pause and my dad almost swiped it. There was almost a fight between my parents for a sfingi!!
