To china or not to china

To china or not to china

FH and i started registering this weekend. boy thats hard and confusing!

our current registry delimma is this:
we are stuck on whether or not to register for china. We picked out a set and put it on the registry, but then we started thinking, do we really need china? I just thought we did because everyone else that registers registered for china. But FH and i have never lived together, and he still lives at home, i live in a small apt, so i have bare necessities. we need EVERYTHING. we feel like we need so much, and we can get so much more if we didnt put china on. And then if we did put china on, we would need to buy the rest of the set if we didnt receive everything, which would be costly.

What are your thoughts on china?
Are you registering for it?
Or are you getting china handed down from family? (essentially still going to have a set)
How often do you think you would use china?
How many place settings are you registering for?

TIA!

This is an excellent question, I can't wait to see what eeryone says. FH and I will be in the same situation when we register and I'm leaning toward no china... but I don't know.

I registered for it because I would like to host holidays in the future and I know it is something I would never buy for myself.

I didn't because we're not big entertainers. Our families are all over the place and would probably never host a holiday with that many people. It made more sense for us to get a more formal 'casual' set.

I am personally NOT registering for china. My reasons are:

1. We don't have a house yet so I don't know where to store it.

2. FH's father still has the china that FH's parents received. FH thinks that his father will give it to us if we want it since he NEVER uses it.

3. If I registered for expensive china, I will end up not letting anyone use it ever for fear of breaking it. I'll be exactly like Monica from Friends on that Thanksgiving episode where she reluctantly lets everyone use the china but tells them not to cut the turkey meat on it because she didn't want the knives scraping it.. lol

we registered for china because:

1. since we already live together we have a lot of stuff.

2. we already host holiday meals & have to borrow china from my parents or FMIL so we would like to have our own.

ITA with this. Also, we hadn't originally wanted china, but I started looking at patterns and fell in love with some.

I'm planning on registering for China.
I was reading an article last night and the woman said to not only think about your life now, think about what you want it to be like in the future. Do you want to use it later in life?
Also, don't most stores do the 10% completion, so that if you don't get everything, you'll get a discount?

ETA: I don't think I will use it very often, but it is something I'd like to have. I will prob register for 12 sets.

We registered for and got all our fine china.
We use it sometimes just for ourselves on special occasions. The one thing that we have NEVER used is our fancy stemware.

as of now i dont have it on-there's too many other things that i need, and plus, i think i only know 1 person who ever actually uses it..i feel like for me (jmo) its a waste to spend so much money on something ill never use...plus we dont have a house, so storage would be an issue

We registered for it because we were told that we 'needed' to by the women at the store. We pared it down significantly to only 4 setting and a platter, figuring that with a small shower, no one would buy it for us.

To our dismay, we were bought ONE setting, as a gift from two people. We were honestly really upset that we got it, so we went to exchange it, and didn't realize there was a gift receipt taped to the bottom, so then we didn't even get credit for the full value because a coupon was used.

If we had it to do over again, we would not have registered for china.

We are planning on registering for fine china. I know that we may not use it much in the beginning of our marriage...but I know in the future when we have a family we will use it all the time during special occasions.

originally i said i didnt want china at all.... i already have everyday stuff... but then i went to tanger and we went to the Lennox outlet and i wound up loving a set i saw there and it is the same price at BBB... so i decided to register for it...

I would like to host a holiday eventually but I doubt i would even use my china for that unless there are only 8 of us... my family is way too big

we are not registering for china... because:
1) I just don't really like it!!
2) we entertain alot and i would rather not worry about using it and it breaking ( i feel like most people don't use it b/c they are always worried about it)
3) I don't want to store it... i have alot of fun serving things to store that we use alot, i have no idea where i would stick in since my china closet it full already!
4) we registered for 16 place settings of everyday dishes we absolutely love that we will not worry about using all the time!!!

We registered for it. I want to host holidays one day and I want to have nice china to serve all that yummy food on. Plus I like the sentimental value of it, and the ability to pass it to my children one day.

We registered for 12 place settings.

We registered for mid-high end 12 pc china for everyday use and my grandma is giving us her fine china (b/c I am obsessed with it).

We probably would have registered for something less expensive for everyday (and maybe only 8 pcs) and then also registered for 12 pc fine china. I think that its something people like to give as gifts and even if you do not use it right now, you will use it in the future.

That's exactly what I'm afraid of!

I have my grandmother's china so we didnt register for it but to be honest, I don't think I would even if I didn't have her china. FH & I love entertaining but I know we will never use it more than 1 or 2xs a year. There are so many other things that we need or would rather have that we would use on a daily basis.

Re: To china or not to china

We did. For several reasons:

(1) We bought a house years even before we were engaged & have been living together for 5 1/2 years - we already had a big housewarming party a year after we moved into the house so we had a lot of what we already needed.

(2) We started our own tradition of hosting Thanksgiving dinner at our house for the past 4 years & it always meant so much to me to be able to one day have nice china to do that for.

(3) Im guess Im very old-fashioned & traditional but to me owning a set of fine china is like a rite of passage and means something to people when they come to visit & share a meal with you.

I dont plan on using it just for holidays - but also anniversaries & birthdays too. I obviously wouldnt use it for every day, but life is too short to own something so beautiful & only use it one day out of 365 every year.

Re: To china or not to china

I didn't intend to at all.....my MIL talked me into it. I didn't get any pieces for my bridal shower but then I was in Macy's and noticed the Mikasa Cameo Platinum service for 8 on sale at Macy's for $300...plus an additional coupon discount.

I couldn't pass that up. I purchased 2 sets and now have place setting for 16. It's a classic design that's not too expensive but definitely looks amazing on the table. I then added all of the additional service platters, soup tureens ect. I received every single remaining piece as a wedding gift.

I highly recommend at least registering for a set like this, I've already used mine a few times- for a special lunch and tea with my Mom and for our 1 month anniversary dinner yesterday

If you're into this stuff, definitely go for it!
