FH and i started registering this weekend. boy thats hard and confusing!
our current registry delimma is this: we are stuck on whether or not to register for china. We picked out a set and put it on the registry, but then we started thinking, do we really need china? I just thought we did because everyone else that registers registered for china. But FH and i have never lived together, and he still lives at home, i live in a small apt, so i have bare necessities. we need EVERYTHING. we feel like we need so much, and we can get so much more if we didnt put china on. And then if we did put china on, we would need to buy the rest of the set if we didnt receive everything, which would be costly.
What are your thoughts on china? Are you registering for it? Or are you getting china handed down from family? (essentially still going to have a set) How often do you think you would use china? How many place settings are you registering for?
TIA!

Re: To china or not to china
i registered for a mid price china we could use for everyday or special occasions. A five piece setting went for about $45, and i registered for 12 and got 8 at my shower. It worked out great :) We have used it everyday since we got it. I just didn't have the space for 2 seperate sets for everyday and special occasions.

we are not registering for china. Even my mother said that there is no point (she doesn't even use her own). I agree that they are nice to have for hosting family holdiays and gatherins but ours are always such large family events that we just use festive paper plates because no one wants to do all those dishes lol.

Re: To china or not to china
I don't think I will for a few reason.
1 being I'll never use it. 2 I have a giant family and a ton of kids involved, the amount of china I would need is insanely expensive 3 at every family party I've ever been to it's either holiday plates, paper plates, or everyday plates. There are just too many of us. 4 I can't see myself ever having a fancy party. 5 My mom has had her china sitting in her china cabinet for 25+ years never used. 6 I don't have a house yet and it's a million times more important for me to get the things I need then people buying me china.

Re: To china or not to china
We are actually hosting Thanksgiving this year, and I plan to do a lot of hosting in the future.
However, we did not register for china. My grandmother passed away in February, just a few months before our wedding, and she had a set of china she and my grandfather (who died 2 1/2 years ago) got in Belgium on a cruise when they were younger (probably 65 years ago) that they NEVER USED but my grandmother used to talk about how much she loved. My father gave it to us.
I plan to wash it all and use it for thanksgiving this year. (It's currently in boxes wrapped with newspaper).
When we get a house in a few years, I plan to get some everyday dishes that match (we combined apartments and currently have a mishmash of stuff) but for now, this will do.
We didn't have any problems not having china on our registry. We got lots of other things and lots of gift cards, and I have to say -- I had no idea what we needed until we moved in together after the wedding and would've registered SO DIFFERENTLY if I had known then what I know now. lol. But it's all good!

I'm going to register for it. I can see myself using it for holidays. I think I might one day regret it if I don't get it now. It's really not something you would probably buy on your own. If you don't use it at least you can display it and it will look pretty!

Re: To china or not to china
We registered for china. We already have a house and want to start hosting holidays and other parties and I think its nice to have. A good friend of mine just got married and she didnt have the room to currently store two sets of dishes so she registered for nicer plain plates and different patterned bowls and serving bowls/platters that she can use for more special occasions and everyday. I think it really comes down to what you plan for the future :)

Re: To china or not to china
I had the China dilemma too. I decided (along with FH) that we would register for China in a box. 8 place setting come in one box.. and I love it (from Macys) . It is Mikasa Parchment. When we registered we registered for 2 boxes at $260. a piece. Much cheaper than buying individual pieces. As a bonus, someone already bought BOTh boxes! Woo hoo! If you are up int he air I def. recommend China in a box!!!!!

I'm going double too! I registered for a set and my grandmother is handing down a set of Noritake China that has been in the family for years...it is beautiful! But I will probably only use that set for very special occasions.
It's nice to have nice things though....go for it!

Re: To china or not to china
I registered for it... FMIL said we should and blah blah blah. So we did... and didn't receive a single piece of china. So for us it was pointless to even bother. Also, I'm kind of glad we didn't get any pieces because we have no room for it anyway.
I think your arguements are going to be.... YES - this is somehting you will never buy yourselves.... so register for it so you will have it someday
NO - there are soo many other things you need or could use that you can register for. Things that you need over china... and storage space is always a concen.

Totally agree. This is what we did. I only opened up one box due to storage space, the other is sitting in the closet. When we own a house and have the space, I can't wait to use it all and host dinners!

Re: To china or not to china
I say do it now. Years down line I think you'll wish you had it but won't want to shell out the $$$ to buy your own set. I think a wedding is the perfect time to get it and just stick it in a china cabinet until you're ready to use it. Plus, people love buying it! Most people don't regret getting their china, even if they don't use it right away (I used to work in the registry department at Macy's so I've gotten a lot of feedback from all sorts of couples on the china dilemma).

Re: To china or not to china
thank you all for your thoughts and opinions on china!!!
im still sooo undecided!!!
i the set i picked out. however, i feel like this:
i wouldnt want to use it because i would be afraid of it breaking if i did host holidays (which i intend to one day), i would be afraid with alot of people handling it, so i would use holiday themed plates- easy clean up as well. however, i would want to use it for special ocassions and gatherings where kids were NOT involved- i gather i would get over the kids thing after it was used a bunch of times. i was checking my registry out and the set i LOVE doesnt have all the pieces... like a butter dish, water pitcher, salt and pepper shaker, cake plate, candlestick holders, etc... do all china sets have these pieces? or do people have non matching?
Thanks!

Re: To china or not to china
i feel like it's the one and only time to get it. i personally wouldn't buy it myself.
then again, i don't have a ton of stuff on my registry and if I did i might rethink it.

We plan on registering for china. I know that we probably won't use it much right away, but we def. will in the future! I also feel like I would not buy it for myself, so I had better put it on my registry.
