To find out the sex or not?

To find out the sex or not?

My husband and I are trying to decide whether we should find out the sex of the baby. Can you share your opinions on the pros and cons of finding out the sex vs. keeping it a surprise? This will be our 3rd child.

Re: To find out the sex or not?

The main reason DH and I wanted to find out the sex of the baby was so we could be prepared. I didn't want to paint the nursery in neutral colors and have neutral bedding and I didn't want clothing in neutral colors either. While it would've been nice to have to surprise, I'm the type of person that likes having things done ahead of time and now that I know I'm having a boy, I'm going to paint his room and buy bedding that's boy-oriented, so it's ready for him when he comes home.

We are pretty much on the same wavelength Kristin...

I wouldn't mind keeping it a surprise, but DH insists on finding out when the time comes since ihe is WAY too imaptient

We're finding out for this one even though DH doesn't want to but I told him for our second it can be a surprise.
Sorry that's not much help is it

Honestly, my husband wanted to find out but I just couldn't. For me it was so much fun that I knew it was going to be a girl, because I could buy things especially for her.

We did not find out and I would never have it any other way!! Who cares about neutral colors!! This is the biggest surprise of your entire lives! That second right after the delivery when I looked down and saw that Angela was a girl was such an experience! At first we thought we would find out for the next one, but no way! I strongly recommend waiting, it was so worth it!

I am going to find out on 4-19-05 I can not wait. I want to be able to prepare for what sex baby we are going to have by painting the nursery and also registering. I hate when people give unisex green or yellow outfit at a shower. I would rather know and bypass all of that guessing. This is our first child so it might be a little different for you. Best of luck.

i'm not pg yet but dh insists he wants to know but i don't think i would. i heard a line from a movie that made sense...it is kind of like knowing your christmas present before it is put under the tree. but all that could change when the time comes.

We are not finding out even though it's so tempting (my Level II is on 4/12). I know it's a surprise whenever it is that you find out, but in my personal opinion, it's so much more exciting when you hear 'It's a boy!' in the waiting room or on the day of delivery than 'Oh, Jack was born.' Also, I actually like the neutral stuff!

Well, this is our first and being that I got pg on the pill, well...that was surprise enough for us, thank you very much.

I always thought I would want a surprise, but I really couldn't wait to find out the sex of the baby. And not because of nursery or clothing colors, I could care less about that stuff... but because it's nice to be able to try (futile though it may be) to prepare yourself for the joys and hurdles of parenthood and girls and boys ARE different. It also helps with picking out a name and just trying to adjust to the idea that you are going to have a child to be able to attach a gender to the baby. We really needed that. We are control freaks too, so that's part of it.

Thank you for all your opinions. I was re-living that moment in the delivery room when the baby is almost out and you just hold your breath waiting to hear the news. Your comments definitely helped me make the decision to NOT find out, the surprise element is priceless! Thanks ladies!! Good luck to all of you!!!

We are not finding out. That to me is part of the great fun of having a baby.
IMO when you get the phone call that a baby is born if you already know boy/girl & the name there's some part of the excitement gone. Don't get me wrong your still excited that the new baby is here. It's just looses the suspense. Am I making sense?

We decided against finding out the sex, it was hard but it has been so exciting. I can't wait to find out what the baby is, it is going to be the best surprise of my life.

Agreed! We are not finding out either. Both of us want to live that excitement when the doctor yells out what the sex is after laboring. Every part of pregnancy is a surprise and exciting - but for us that'll be the crowning moment

I agree. Someone I know once said There are so few truly wonderful surprises in life, why would you deprive yourself of it? I totally agree!

Also, as far as doing the nursery in neutral colors, I think that also depends on how much space you have. If you're planning on another baby after your first and planning to use the same nursery, it makes sense to do things neutral anyway because you never know what the sex of the next one will be.

My husband insists we find out the sex. Actually, he said HE is finding out the sex but I don't have to (yeah right ). He wants to be prepared. He said it doesn't want his child in all yellow and green outfits . I didn't want to at first but our level II is on April 13 and now I can't wait to find out.............soooooo exciting
