To Joint or not to Joint!!

Hey girls just want to pose this question and see where everyone stands with regards to bank accounts. I have talked to so many married women and everyone thinks very differently about this and so far it has worked for each one...
Have you girls given up or are planning to give up your savings account and just dumped everything into the joint savings acct or do you plan to keep your personal saving acct?

We opened up a JT acct once we got engaged so that a part of our paychecks go in for the vendors that we are paying for......we still both have our own single accts and I think it will probably stay that way once we get married. The JT will probably be for rent, bills, etc but I am sure we will still keep our own for other things.

we just set up a joint savings account to put in money from our e-party and our wedding

after the wedding we may keep our personal accounts for a lil until we merge everything, but eventually it will be one account

We have a joint savings account and personal checking accounts. We will be getting a joint checking account closer to the wedding.

FH and I set up a joint online savings. This is basically our wedding acct. I will always have my own savings and so will he. I was reading in a magazine that they suggest this. Lets say if your FH (or husband) wants to buy some stupid $80 game, he can take it out of his personal savings instead of taking it out of the joint acct which goes towards bills etc.

We set up a joint account after getting engaged so that the gifts we get from our engagement party would go into that. We both still have our own bank accounts and contribute to the joint one as much as we can. Hopefully one day it will go towards a house

its actually REALLY GOOD that we did the joint account........

you wont believe how much you save how quickly if u stick with not touching it......

we already have over $6000 in it and 9 more months til the wedding.........

the only thing we're using the money for is to pay the honeymoon off

i figured we'll have about 20K saved by the wedding and only about 8K has to come out for the HM so that will leave us w/a nice chunk-o-change before we even get our wedding gifts

DOOO IT!!!!!!!

As of right now we just have a joint savings which is where all of our wedding money goes. Then when we have to make payments, I usually transfer the $$ to my checking and write a check. Closer to the wedding we'll probably open a joint checking as well.

The only thing joint we will have is a savings with our wedding money.

I do not believe at all in joint accounts and have seen recently in personal experience the consequenses of having a joint account.

It is SO true - we didn't realize how much would add up by taking a part of our paycheck out and putting it into the JT...We have over a year to go and the rate we are going, we hope it will accumulate enough to go towards our down payment, along with the $$ we get from the wedding.....SAVE SAVE SAVE!

I should add the FH and I 'jointly' put money into a savings account for the wedding but it is only under my name

We have a joint checking (this is primarily the wedding account and also pays the household bills) and then we have our separate savings and checking accounts.

We have a joint and I have my own savings - right now with the wedding I have all my money going into the joint b/c its just easier...

Re: To Joint or not to Joint!!

we have already discussed this but will be speaking about it again with FHs financial adviser and our accountant, to make sure what we want to do is the best way to have things.

we currently have our own separate bank accounts. we each share our joint bills. (rent, cell phone, cable, car payments, car insurance)

once married we would like to set up one household checking account. we will each contribute a certain percent of our salary to pay for household expenses. however, we will still keep our own separate checking & savings account, with the other named as an additional account holder in case something happens to one of us.

Re: To Joint or not to Joint!!

First I'm going to start off by saying that the WOMAN AT THE BANK tried to tell me how insane I was for having a joint account with FH before we were married! Like umm.... did I ask you for your opinion?

Anyway - we each have personal checking and savings account, and then we have a joint savings account.

Like others said, it's incredible how much money you save with a joint account. My theory is this - If I'm going to be 'bad' with spending, I'm going to do it secretly - ie, from my personal accounts. I am certainly not going to touch the joint account - he would have undeniable proof of my weakness!!!
