Hey girls just want to pose this question and see where everyone stands with regards to bank accounts. I have talked to so many married women and everyone thinks very differently about this and so far it has worked for each one... Have you girls given up or are planning to give up your savings account and just dumped everything into the joint savings acct or do you plan to keep your personal saving acct?

Re: To Joint or not to Joint!!
We've been living together for so long that everything is in one place. I have access to everything so I can transfer money when I have to. I've always done all of the banking.
We are def a two person income household and neither of us could support our expenses without the other, so neither of us has more money than the other.
I do have a personal ING account as my grandmother gave me two substantial amounts of money over the past few years. Rightfully so my name was the only one on the checks. I don't touch that money, my father manages it and rolls it into CD's, stockts etc when he feels there is something good out there. FH knows about all of it, and it will eventually be our down payment.

Re: To Joint or not to Joint!!
I had an online savings account that I had started a few years ago. I'm going to link FH's checking to it and we plan to do an automatic transfer every month of an agreed amount, but also keep our separate savings and checking accounts.

He has his money, I have my money, & we both have our money as a joint. We split everything 50/50, anything over we keep. We put equal $$$$ into joint savings. We've been living together for over 10 years & it's been a rule from the start. A good rule that's working fine.

Re: To Joint or not to Joint!!
we will have a joint.. but we are def keeping our own seperate accounts.
i like the idea of a 'yours'mine'ours'
i dont think its fair if we just have 1 combined account. Why should his pay check go twds my shoes and my pay check is certainly not going to his freakin $1,000 BICYCLES. yes u read that right.. BICYCLES.

Re: To Joint or not to Joint!!
We've lived together for over a year now and I kept telling FH, 'Gee life would be easier if we just had some joint account to use, but we can only do that if we are engaged!' So a week after getting engaged we got a joint checking, savings, and credit card. We each put $1000 per paycheck in and use it towards 'us' things like wedding stuff, food, etc... It ha made life so much easier!

Re: To Joint or not to Joint!!
We will keep our own private accounts but we will open up a joint account after the engagement party this weekend to put all of the gift money in there. We're fortunate enough that we are not paying for our wedding (very blessed) but we will save all money from our e-party & put it towards our honeymoon. Then we'll prob each contribute some of our paychecks to our joint account & some to our personal accounts.

I should add the FH and I 'jointly' put money into a savings account for the wedding but it is only under my name
Right now while we're still separate, I have my savings and checking, and FH has his savings and checking. Each pay day he gives me an agreed upon amount that I put into my savings acct which is the wedding account. I keep track of how much he's given me in an excel spreadsheet. I also can tell you exactly how much each of have spent toward the wedding.
When we get married, I am keeping my own checking / savings. I expect FH to do the same, and we'll open a joint one for bills. Part of each of our paychecks will go to each account. It's been agreed that I will pay the bills and take care of the account, because I don't mind.
It's SO important to have your own money, too. Life changes... People lose jobs, die, get divorced, etc. You need to have something to fall back on.

We opened a joint savings account when we got engaged, but we still both have our own checking and savings accounts too.
ETA: We will ALWAYS have separate accounts in addition to the joint one. My mother taught me to make sure I always have my own money available if I need it.
i agree... after we got engaged we opened the joint account but my mother always told me to have my own money on the side... so i'm going to put most of my money in the joint account but i'm still going to keep my own account separate

Re: To Joint or not to Joint!!
We each have our own savings and checking at the moment. We will have a joint shortly. I'm good at spending and he at saving, so my check goes towards bills and such, and his to certain payments and the rest saving...
