To Joint or not to Joint!!

Original post by blessed18

Hey girls just want to pose this question and see where everyone stands with regards to bank accounts. I have talked to so many married women and everyone thinks very differently about this and so far it has worked for each one...
Have you girls given up or are planning to give up your savings account and just dumped everything into the joint savings acct or do you plan to keep your personal saving acct?

Re: To Joint or not to Joint!!

We opened a joint savings account when we got engaged, but we still both have our own checking and savings accounts too.

ETA: We will ALWAYS have separate accounts in addition to the joint one. My mother taught me to make sure I always have my own money available if I need it.

FH and I have a joint checking and a joint savings account, but we each have our own checking accounts as well.

Basically we budgeted out all our bills/expenses for the month. Then we figured out how much we make between us each month. After that we figured out what percentage of the total is given by each person (for us, FH ends up with 75% of our total monthly income and I contribute 25%)...so we split the bills 75/25 and we each contribute that amount each month.

So most of our money goes into the joint checking and the little that we have left over goes in our individual checking accounts so that if we want to buy one another a present or just buy things for ourselves its not like we are buying it with the other person's money.

I'm keeping my accounts, but after we had our Eparty, FH and I decided to open a joint savings together and put money in it to save for the wedding. I doubt we'll need anything past that and if we do, then we'll deal with it when the time comes. I have absolutely no intention of dumping my own accounts.

I actually have access to all of FH's accounts. However, he does not have access to mine. I also have nothing in mine, though. LOL.

When we got engaged we opened up a joint savings account. We both put money into that for the wedding and ever after that. With each paycheck we both put money into that. He has his own checking account also and I have my own savings and checking for our own separet bills.

We have ajoint savings that we opened when we got engaged and we have been using it for wedding stuff. But we still have our own separate checking and savings accounts.

we have two joint accounts...a wedding account and a home expensive account. then we have our own savings and checking and cds and all that good stuff. for now we only want the two joint accounts. after the wedding the wedding account is going to be 'savings for a new house' account.

we have a combined savings account and our own separate checking accounts

We get our checks direct deposit into our separate accounts and then we transfer money to our joint for our joint expenses.

we will have the majority of our money go into a joint account but will each keep a small account of our own....that way if we wanna buy each other gifts the other person can't look at the statements and see purchases...stuff like that.

we live together and own a home together, so it works best for us to have everything combined, we have a joint checking and a joint savings.

we both have personal savings and checking, but we have a joint ING Savings account also...

This is waht we are doing so far. We just opened a joing ING account for our 'wedding fund'. so whatever we can put in there we do..

i also have a seperate ING savings account, and when i am done using what i need for FH gifts, BM gifts and my dress and accessories i will dump the rest into the wedding fund account.

We plan to have a joint savings and checking and also a separate checking for each of us. The joint checking and savings would be for rent/mortgage, food, utilities, etc. The separates ones would be for personal items like clothing, gifts etc - to spend on what we want. We are planning to put away 5%-10% of our checks in our separate accounts and the rest in joint ones

ps. on the ING. we LOVE them. we currently have a joint high yield savings and checking account. one savings account specifically for the wedding

We have a joint savings now, and seperate checking. After the wedding, everything will be joint. It's all a part of being married for us- sharing!!

PS: Anyone remember the last time this topic came up...early 08? )

we just set up a joint savings account to put in money from our e-party and our wedding

after the wedding we may keep our personal accounts for a lil until we merge everything, but eventually it will be one account

same here!

we haven't done anything yet but the consensus is that we get a joint account AND keep our individual accounts.
