to teachers that are permanently certified or are working on it now . . .
I have everything in place except for my video. How many times did you do your video until it was perfect? How strict is the scoring on the video- I want to start working on the video, but don't really know how to go about it . . .

i did my video my first year teaching - i set it up so i could tape two different classes - but the 1st one turned out great, so i used that one. and it passed - i don't think they're all that tough when it comes to the video.... nothing to worry about really

I teach three 5th grade classes and two 6th... I was planning to tape myself teaching the same lesson to all three fifth grade classes but then my principal messed me up and I ended up just taping one... I thought it came out okay so I sent it, just waiting to hear back from them! I heard they barely look at them. As long as you follow the directions I wouldn't worry!

I did it once and passed, though I paid someone at Lehman College to come and tape me. It cost over $100, but it was well worth it. This guy knew what he was doing. I am a spaz with video-related things, so I know I would have used the wrong tape or something. This man was familiar with the format and during the time when the kids were working on their own, knew exactly where to put the camera. He also had signs, which he held up when I needed to move on to the next part. The timing aspect is TIGHT. I have heard that a) they only actually watch one video in five but b) you will be failed for going one minute over 30.
I would say, have someone you really trust come in and do similar things. Don't trust a colleague to do it. I work with nice people, but their skills with video were about as good as mine. Several people at my school paid this person, actually. But I wouldn't worry about it.

To be honest I don't think they really look at them. I think as long as you follow their directions and their are no glitches in the tape you pass! I did mine (forgot that I had to) with a 104 fever and almost no voice believe me it wasn't pretty and I passed

oh geez . . . I kind of thought I could just put a camera on a stand and tape myself, or have a colleague do it . . . Like my librarian who is in charge of the media center

I had the teacher who i shared the classroom with tape me and it came out fine....we used a tripod and she stood with it at the back of the class.
then during a study hall, i watched it and was pleased, so i sent it out...you can have a teacher do it for ou - not to worry

Well, someone in charge of the media center probably knows what she's doing. When I did mine, the camera was focused on the kids quite a bit, to see how they interacted with each other and to see how I interacted with them. So I don't know if I'd rely on a tripod with no one to operate it.
You also have time- I rushed to get mine in for the last deadline in June, so I didn't have the luxury of making tapes, watching them and doing them over if needed. I really think you'll be fine.

It says right on there if you don't have anyone tape if for you what exactly you need to do, you can have a student do it or a collegue you don't have to pay someone to do it. It is all explained in there.
Christy call Boces and get the information packet I think - too many years for me I don't even remember anymore

Honestly...I don't even think anyone watches the video. I've seen teachers who are permanently certified who have NO Business in a classroom. Don't sweat it! Just do your best! I'm sure you'll do fine!
Best of luck!

i heard a rumor that someone sent in her wedding video by accident and still passed. i also heard that you can't have any footage of the kids faces. and to get the kit before you do it b/c there are a whole bunch of directions to follow and you want to do it right the first time, but at the same time, i heard they aren't too hard with it.

Not to be a buzz kill, but I know of someone who just failed.
They are super strict on 2 things. 1. time - you must meet the minimum - that's why this guy failed - he was 2 minutes short
2. no editing

Re: to teachers that are permanently certified or are working on it now . . .
i also did my video- it was a pain in the neck b/c there are certain technical things you have to be aware of...
date/time can not be on the video
you must be present on the video at all times. the lesson must be 10 min intro 20 min independent work with you walking and guiding the kids, 10 minute wrap up (i think)
there are some other things too but I forgot them.
i taped myself twice and hated both videos. the lessons were great i just didnt realize how many facial expressionsI make when i teach.. it was very interesting. I sent in the first one and I passed. I had the teacher who was familiar with technology and cameras tape me.

I was taking classes at the time and picked up the booklet at my college's certification office. Once I sent in the $$, they sent the info book, which had everything I needed. If you call NYSTCE they will also send you a book, or you may be able to register online. I registered online for the last CST I took.
From what I remember, you can't refer to the kids using last names. I also had to get a release from the parents in order to allow the kids to be taped.
