To the 08'ers with love … … … from the 07'ers

Original post by PreshusSmurf

With just barely over 1 week until it is officially 'YOUR YEAR,' here are some words of advice from one the old married ladies on the 07 board … The other girls plan to add to this thread as well.

Your Day, Your Way
Whatever you do, no matter who is paying for what part of the wedding, don't forget that the day is supposed to be about you & your FH. And the love that the two of you share, which is what got you to this point in the first place. Don't loose sight of that, put your personal stamp on everything and make sure it reflects your taste and personality. Even when someone tells you they're not sure they love the flowers you picked, or she thinks she likes something about 'the other dress' more, or 'what do you mean you're not wearing heels?' Do what feels right to you. Do what makes you happy. Do it your way!

The Bridal Party
* Don't allow you & your FH to be bullied into asking people to be Bridesmaids or Groomsmen. Keep it small and intimate (less members = less stress), and only ask the people you know you will always have in your lives. Just because you used to be close, or you were in their bridal party doesn't mean they have to be in your Bridal Party. Make your selections wisely.

* Be kind to them, and they will be kind back. What goes around comes around, and Karma is a b!tch!!!

* I've always found it ridiculous when Brides make crazy demands of their girls. Especially about hairstyle, makeup, shoes, nails. I provided information about my hairstylist/makeup artist, but did not insist that anyone have anything professionally done. They asked how to wear their hair, I responded to them they should do whatever they wanted as long as they felt beautiful. Who cares if you were planning to wear your hair in an up-do, its not like anyone will confuse who is the bride & a bridesmaid!! When they asked what shoes to wear, my only request is that they were brown (the color of their dresses) & comfortable. It’s a long day for the bridal party too, if they're not comfortable with what they're wearing or how they look, they'll be a lot less likely to smile in your expensive pictures!

* Pregnancy is a wonderful life event and is meant to be celebrated. Never ask anyone to plan their pregnancy around your wedding day. My MOH and one of my BMs were pregnant at our wedding. Congratulate them. Tell them how wonderful it is, what a blessing it is, and that you hope it will bring you & your FH lots of luck when it is your turn. And do whatever you can to help accommodate them with picking the dress … even if they will be far enough along that a maternity style will be necessary.

Ignore The Weather
Out of every aspect of wedding planning, this is the ONE thing you have ABSOLUTELY NO CONTROL OVER WHATSOEVER! Make sure you have a Plan B incase it is gross out that day, and then leave it up to fate. Checking the almanac and the weather 100 times the week of the wedding will not change anything. Most likely the forecast will be wrong anyway. And if it does rain/snow/hail, take comfort in knowing that some of the best photos on these boards were taken in the rain. Rainy Day Pictures

Get it in Writing
Now I know this sounds like common sense, but sometimes during wedding planning you get caught up in the emotion of everything and common sense flies out the window! The BM we booked with mysteriously disappeared after we booked our wedding, without warning or notice. Foolishly, we had left a few very important details with a verbal agreement and a handshake. Neither means anything if the BM went back to Argentina or now works at another hall. If we had put those in writing, it would have saved us a lot of hassle and unnecessary stress.

Hire a DOC
Make sure she's reliable, reputable and on the ball … and it will save you tons of headaches on the big day. I can't even believe that I wasn't planning to have a DOC, I'm not sure I could have gotten through the day without her. They will be there to make sure everything is setup just how you imagined it to be, and to handle any last minute emergency or crisis that comes up.

Get a Video
We don't have ours back yet, but I can't wait to see it. The day went by so quickly, and is such a blur in my memory. My Aunt was there with her video camera and *promised* to send us the footage so we could see it as soon as we got back from the honeymoon, but her husband ended up recording over our ceremony with footage of her dancing with one of her sisters. Even if you don't pay for the editing, just spend the money to have it professionally captured on video.

Get the 2nd Photographer
While I do love my proofs and think our photographer did a good job, I just wish there were more of them. Shots from a different angle, shots of other people's reactions as things were happening, more candid pictures. I thought I wanted to add a photojournalist, but was talked out of it. I should have trusted my 'Bride Instinct.' Also … please remember that not every single picture that is taken that day is going to be perfect. The girls on this site post the BEST out of hundreds of proofs. Please don't set yourself up for disappointment thinking ALL your pictures will be as perfect as the ones you see on LIW.

Soak It All In
A few times throughout the evening, take a moment with your brand new Hubby to look around the room, and absorb everything going on around you. Everyone there in that room took the time out of their life to be there for you. Feel the love in the room. Look around and see all the personal details and personal touches that you worked so hard to create.

Eat!
If you don't you'll pass out! You will be served first. Sit down with your new Hubby and eat a few bites. Most halls give you the option of having a little of everything (or whatever menu options you want). So, eat for nourishment. And eat to enjoy your wedding food that you worked so hard to pick out. And eat so when your Great Aunt Mildred complains that the chicken was dry or the steak was too rare, you can rest assured that either she's the only one or that she's crazy!

Dance!
Dance like there's no tomorrow! there isn't ... there's only 1 wedding day! Spend as much time as you possibly can on the dance floor celebrating. I promise you will never look back on your wedding and say you danced too much. You might, however, look back and say 'I spent too much time going around to the tables' or 'I spent too much time taking posed family pictures.' Its your party and you should enjoy it!

Write a Review
And start it NOW! Write it in Word and save it on your computer. As you go through the next year of planning your wedding, there will be vendors who you forget the details of your dealings as you get closer to the day. You can always go back and edit it before posting on the site. Reviews from 06'ers and before helped me out so much when planning my wedding, they're a way of making sure to 'Pay It Forward' to the future LIW brides. mine is still a work in progress, i promise to post it very soon.

Some Threads From My Notebook
I found these all to be very helpful throughout my planning process:

And with all that said, make sure you ENJOY YOUR ENGAGEMENT. Enjoy every second of it. Celebrate it. You will never get this time back, you can never do it over again.

I wish you all the best, most perfect, wonderful weddings ... and a lifetime of happiness to follow.

May everything you wish for …. be the least that you get.

PS > I am sure I will have more to add to this … it is still a work in progress.

Re: To the 08'ers with love … … … from the 07'ers

My advice:

*Enjoy your day! If you can get a separate car for just you and your DH to go to and from the church. This gave us the opportunity to talk after the church ceremony, uninterrupted. It made it more relaxing and allowed us to talk about our days.

*When we were done taking pictures we began to go to the bridal suite. Our MD asked if we wanted the wedding party there. I said of course, I want to hang out with them. As we walk up the stairs, I hear them all talking loudly and they are trying to get chairs from other rooms. I immediately tell the MD to get them out of there. I already had a headache starting to creep up and I needed to relax. DH and I were able to relax for about an hour before the CH. There were no friends, family or photographers. It was great. We ate a little bit, took some advil, and just relaxed. If you have the opportunity to do this, please do so. It really did recharge us and we were ready to greet everyone with smiles.

*Be specific with what you want in your bok. I showed them pics and all but my bms boks were the wrong colors.

*If you have real buttons make sure you get a crochet needle to help you button them. Luckily, I picked one up the day before, but it was still a pain to button my dress.

*Do not stress about the small things. In the long run, they do not matter. So what if my BMs boks were not exactly what I wanted. It annoyed me, but I was certainly not going to allow it to ruin my day.

Good Luck Ladies!!! Enjoy your year!!!!

Re: To the 08'ers with love … … … from the 07'ers

Ladies this is the most exciting time for you!!!! Enjoy every moment that you can...people will piss you off...that is a guarantee! haha Take it in stride and try not to get too upset because after it's all over you won't even remember why you got so angry in the first place...and you will most likely laugh at how you, even the sweetest of brides, can actually grow horns & become a full blown Bridezilla ( i sure as hell did!

Take time for yourself! This is something i didn't do, and the last few days before my wedding were more crazed than enjoyable. Set boundaries!!!! If you have OOTers invading your space kindly express that you need some time to focus and get things done...i had a meltdown & yelled in front of everyone in my house...worked just as well but didn't make the best impression

Focus on your FH when all else fails...look at pics when you first started dating, or read an old card or e-mail that made you fall in love in the first place...especially if he's stressing you out or not pitching in as much as you'd like...most men don't like wedding planning...haha...we can't fight nature girls!

Do what YOU want...this is your wedding, whether Mom & Dad are paying or you are footing the bill. You are a grown up and are starting a new life...don't feel obligated to please others, cause at the end of the day, YOU should be the one happy! There will always be someone who doesn't like what you are doing. My motto was 'If you don't like it, you don't have to come!!!!!!!!!'

Get some sleep! And if you don't...tea bags work wonders on puffy eyes!!! I was up late the nite before, stressing about hotels and stupid stuff, but when i woke up on my wedding day, the sun was shining and I was getting married! I have never been so happy or calm in my life as my wedding day...and it shows in every picture.

If you are thinking about writing your own vows...do it! You don't have to be poetic...just speak from the heart. This was one of the most precious moments in our wedding...especially because Dh blew me away with what he said...he had grown men crying!

Last but not least...if you are on the fence about getting video...DO IT! I cannot tell you how little i remembered from that day...and no, i wasn't drinking...but had such an adrenaline rush, i didn't even remember walking down the aisle..and watching the video, i was laughing at some of the silly stuff i was saying to DH during the ceremony. Even if you assign a family member to tape certain things, you will be glad you did.

Well ladies I could write a book of advice so i will stop rambling on...and wish you all nothing but the best...happy planning and more importantly may you all have a 'happily ever after!'. This is YOUR year and i can't wait to see pics of you ladies as brides!!!!!!

Re: To the 08'ers with love … … … from the 07'ers

Okay, here goes

1. It will be the fastest day of your life, and no matter how hard you try, things WILL go wrong and I can promise, YOU WON'T CARE!!!!!! Your head will be spinning....so many people want to talk to you, everyone is taking pictures, etc etc. As in life, something is bound to go wrong. On my day, we had an atrotious speech made by the best man, not enough sushi for us, and they almost dropped the cake!!! I didn't care though...I felt like a princess, and I was marrying the love of my life. Trust me, you don't care

2. EVERYTHING WILL WORK OUT, PROMISE!!! It is so hard to realize that when it feels like the weight of the world is on your shoulders and no one cares. As I said, things will go wrong, and you won't care. It is so tiny in comparison to the amazing day your wedding will be! So, don't sweat the mess ups prior to the day. You can always fix the dress, yell at the caterer, re-print your messed up program (and no one is looking at a typo, promise)...deep breath, next step.

3. Do NOT check the weather obsessively before your day. The Farmer's Almanac does not predict weather with any sort of certainty. You will know what the weather will be when you step out of your house. The weather forecast is going to change every half hour. They predicted rain...we had a partly cloudy not too cold day. So remember-partly cloudy with a chance of showers=we don't know so we will cover our bases. Don't sweat that which you cannot control. You will have an incredible day no matter what.

4. You don't have to run out and use every single idea you see on LIW-just because you see cry packs, doesn't mean you MUST have them. And DIYs-in my opinion, chose what you really want to do yourself, get your girls to help and do only that. Some girls on here are incredible, but we all have different time restraints/talents/abilities....I am artistically challenged...I stuck with programs. So, if you love something, go for it...if not, don't waste time/money

5. This is a Jewish tradition that we did that I think really helped us. After the ceremony, we had a 5 minute retreat by ourselves to the bridal suite called the Yichud. No, nothing dirty, but we had time to let it sink it, talk, eat something and pee. (Peeing is a bit complicated...get some help). This was the best idea, because we had time alone without any disruptions to let it sink in. We were refreshed and we were ready for the rest of the day!!! And eat something when you do this...you must eat or you will faint!

6. If you are on a budget, do NOT skimp on photography. I am so glad we went with Jeffrey Studios (promise, I will finish my review this century)-we were hesitant, because it was pricey. Worth it though when I saw my many gorgeous proofs! This doesn't mean higher price=higher quality. You want to try to talk to other people you know to find out what they think, because every photographer will only show their best work and raves. Take time and make sure you feel comfortable with your photographer. If you have a gigantic family or huge BP, splurge on a second photographer. It took a lot of stress off of us, and we got everything we wanted.

7. Don't ever be afraid to tell anyone what you want-don't assume vendors know what you want, and if you are unhappy, tell them now, not on the day (unless you have to). I was pushy, I told my photographer that I wanted certain poses...he was great and worked with me! I was so glad! I didn't like a sample flower-I told them! Everything was incredible!!! They work for you that day, remember. You have a right to ask for what you want, and they have to listen. And most vendors want your input!!!

8. You need video. Period. You will be so overwhelmed and everything is so surreal that you won't remember cute details...it is nice to be able to see what really happened!!

9. Receiving line-you need this too. Our MIL was insistent on making us go to every table and saying hello and thank you. I don't say this because I don't think people should be thanked. But people will try to engage you in conversation, and when you have a big wedding, you don't get to enjoy yourself because you are too busy making sure to say thank you. Have a line, say hi then. Make a speech or thank people over the microphone. Talk to as many people as possible-on the dance floor. Don't spend all your time trying to say hi to everyone-it won't happen.

10. Remember to tell DH you love him and kiss a lot that day!

My kitten is climbing on my computer now, so I will post links later. FM for questions, and I will post again later!

Yes! Absolutely! I didn't mean to exclude anyone ... I just figured the 08ers are most in need of grounding and advice right now. Plus, that's how the 06ers did it, and I wanted to continue their tradition

Re: To the 08'ers with love … … … from the 07'ers

Here goes my list !

1- Do NOT sweat the small stuff..... trust me NOBODY even noticed that my monogrammed aisle runner was missing and at that point I just didnt care!!!!

2- Take it ALL in- its your day girls! Take a small break from everything and just have a moment to yourselves to take it all in and the fabulous job you did on planning such an important day in your lives! !

3- Looking at the weather channel, weather.com or the farmers almanac wont change the weather- Whatever weather you have- whether rain, shine, windy or snowy it will be PERFECT!!!!! So dont worry about it! Its something that is uncontralable!

4- Definately hire vendors that you trust

5- DOC was not needed for me but I guess it depends on your preference!

6- If you are deciding whether or not to get a videographer- GO FOR IT!!! The final video is unbelievable!!!

7- This web site is unbelievably helpful- if you have any questions, doubts or just need to vent to someone- do not be afraid to post- this site helped me get my dream wedding- without it my wedding would have never been the same.....

8- EAT BEFORE YOU WALK DOWN THE AISLE!!! As my nutritionist said eat something thats a little higher in protein! I had an egg sandwich that day and it kept me good for the day!

9- DRINK DRINK DRINK (water that is) especially if you are having a summer wedding

and last but not least- advice given to me by our best man who is a cop

when you are standing at the alter do NOT lock your knees- if you are hot and you lock your knees you increase your chances of fainting!!!

OH AND THE FINAL THING for you ladies!!!
DANCE, LAUGH, AND ENJOY YOUR DAY because honestly IT GOES BY WAYYY TOO FAST!!!!!

DH says ' Play video games before! '

Best of luck girls and may 2008 be as much of a wonderful year as 2007 was to us!!!!!

ETA- See Im already adding!!!

Photos- If there are specific photos you want- do NOT be afraid to tell the photographer what you want0 even to provide them a list- YOU are paying the big bucks... same goes for the DJ and any other vendor-

While I'm not an 'old married 07er' just yet, I will do my best to add to this wonderful list of advice after our wedding.

I will give some advice to the future December 08 brides though.........your day will get here- I promise!! There were times I never thought my month or day would come, but here I am, only a few days away and I never thought it would ever be MY TIME!! I am still in shock.

My other piece of advice is to enjoy being engaged!! Matt and I had a two year engagement and I have to say that it was a fantastic 2 year engagement. We got to enjoy being engaged and the entire planning process. One day though, you will wake up in the middle of the night, realizing you only have 2 months left to get everything done, like I did but enjoy this great time!!!

With everyone asking if I've gone 'bridezilla' yet, I am happy to say that I am just so excited and rather calm! Remember to keep your head and heart focused on the important things!!

Good luck and best wishes to each and everyone one of you! 2008 is going to be a great year!!

Re: To the 08'ers with love … … … from the 07'ers

Try not to get stressed over what family members will wear. DH's parents (I don't even refer to them as inlaws), especially his mom had no interest in finding a dress, or discuss what color she was going to wear. (I guess I wanted her to care a little bit more since my mom passed away).

They ended up wearing-
his mom-some two piece flowy skirt w/a floral top. She looked okay

His stepmom-a very casual pant suit

His dad-a regular suit w/a bright red shirt.

Now I look back, who cares if they looked like idiots, you are your husband are the main focus and if you two look your best, thats all that matters.
