To the 08'ers with love … … … from the 07'ers

Original post by PreshusSmurf

With just barely over 1 week until it is officially 'YOUR YEAR,' here are some words of advice from one the old married ladies on the 07 board … The other girls plan to add to this thread as well.

Your Day, Your Way
Whatever you do, no matter who is paying for what part of the wedding, don't forget that the day is supposed to be about you & your FH. And the love that the two of you share, which is what got you to this point in the first place. Don't loose sight of that, put your personal stamp on everything and make sure it reflects your taste and personality. Even when someone tells you they're not sure they love the flowers you picked, or she thinks she likes something about 'the other dress' more, or 'what do you mean you're not wearing heels?' Do what feels right to you. Do what makes you happy. Do it your way!

The Bridal Party
* Don't allow you & your FH to be bullied into asking people to be Bridesmaids or Groomsmen. Keep it small and intimate (less members = less stress), and only ask the people you know you will always have in your lives. Just because you used to be close, or you were in their bridal party doesn't mean they have to be in your Bridal Party. Make your selections wisely.

* Be kind to them, and they will be kind back. What goes around comes around, and Karma is a b!tch!!!

* I've always found it ridiculous when Brides make crazy demands of their girls. Especially about hairstyle, makeup, shoes, nails. I provided information about my hairstylist/makeup artist, but did not insist that anyone have anything professionally done. They asked how to wear their hair, I responded to them they should do whatever they wanted as long as they felt beautiful. Who cares if you were planning to wear your hair in an up-do, its not like anyone will confuse who is the bride & a bridesmaid!! When they asked what shoes to wear, my only request is that they were brown (the color of their dresses) & comfortable. It’s a long day for the bridal party too, if they're not comfortable with what they're wearing or how they look, they'll be a lot less likely to smile in your expensive pictures!

* Pregnancy is a wonderful life event and is meant to be celebrated. Never ask anyone to plan their pregnancy around your wedding day. My MOH and one of my BMs were pregnant at our wedding. Congratulate them. Tell them how wonderful it is, what a blessing it is, and that you hope it will bring you & your FH lots of luck when it is your turn. And do whatever you can to help accommodate them with picking the dress … even if they will be far enough along that a maternity style will be necessary.

Ignore The Weather
Out of every aspect of wedding planning, this is the ONE thing you have ABSOLUTELY NO CONTROL OVER WHATSOEVER! Make sure you have a Plan B incase it is gross out that day, and then leave it up to fate. Checking the almanac and the weather 100 times the week of the wedding will not change anything. Most likely the forecast will be wrong anyway. And if it does rain/snow/hail, take comfort in knowing that some of the best photos on these boards were taken in the rain. Rainy Day Pictures

Get it in Writing
Now I know this sounds like common sense, but sometimes during wedding planning you get caught up in the emotion of everything and common sense flies out the window! The BM we booked with mysteriously disappeared after we booked our wedding, without warning or notice. Foolishly, we had left a few very important details with a verbal agreement and a handshake. Neither means anything if the BM went back to Argentina or now works at another hall. If we had put those in writing, it would have saved us a lot of hassle and unnecessary stress.

Hire a DOC
Make sure she's reliable, reputable and on the ball … and it will save you tons of headaches on the big day. I can't even believe that I wasn't planning to have a DOC, I'm not sure I could have gotten through the day without her. They will be there to make sure everything is setup just how you imagined it to be, and to handle any last minute emergency or crisis that comes up.

Get a Video
We don't have ours back yet, but I can't wait to see it. The day went by so quickly, and is such a blur in my memory. My Aunt was there with her video camera and *promised* to send us the footage so we could see it as soon as we got back from the honeymoon, but her husband ended up recording over our ceremony with footage of her dancing with one of her sisters. Even if you don't pay for the editing, just spend the money to have it professionally captured on video.

Get the 2nd Photographer
While I do love my proofs and think our photographer did a good job, I just wish there were more of them. Shots from a different angle, shots of other people's reactions as things were happening, more candid pictures. I thought I wanted to add a photojournalist, but was talked out of it. I should have trusted my 'Bride Instinct.' Also … please remember that not every single picture that is taken that day is going to be perfect. The girls on this site post the BEST out of hundreds of proofs. Please don't set yourself up for disappointment thinking ALL your pictures will be as perfect as the ones you see on LIW.

Soak It All In
A few times throughout the evening, take a moment with your brand new Hubby to look around the room, and absorb everything going on around you. Everyone there in that room took the time out of their life to be there for you. Feel the love in the room. Look around and see all the personal details and personal touches that you worked so hard to create.

Eat!
If you don't you'll pass out! You will be served first. Sit down with your new Hubby and eat a few bites. Most halls give you the option of having a little of everything (or whatever menu options you want). So, eat for nourishment. And eat to enjoy your wedding food that you worked so hard to pick out. And eat so when your Great Aunt Mildred complains that the chicken was dry or the steak was too rare, you can rest assured that either she's the only one or that she's crazy!

Dance!
Dance like there's no tomorrow! there isn't ... there's only 1 wedding day! Spend as much time as you possibly can on the dance floor celebrating. I promise you will never look back on your wedding and say you danced too much. You might, however, look back and say 'I spent too much time going around to the tables' or 'I spent too much time taking posed family pictures.' Its your party and you should enjoy it!

Write a Review
And start it NOW! Write it in Word and save it on your computer. As you go through the next year of planning your wedding, there will be vendors who you forget the details of your dealings as you get closer to the day. You can always go back and edit it before posting on the site. Reviews from 06'ers and before helped me out so much when planning my wedding, they're a way of making sure to 'Pay It Forward' to the future LIW brides. mine is still a work in progress, i promise to post it very soon.

Jess put it SO well ...I'm not sure there's much left LOL

Just have fun with all the planning and don't be afraid to delegate some 'work' to others...you can't do it all alone as much as you think you will be capable....
Don't stress the small stuff......
And remember it's all about marring the love of your life that is the most important part....not Just a great party-

Lot's of Luck and Best wishes to all the 2008 Brides!!!!

There is so much to say, but many of the previous posters have said it already. I won't go through and tell you again that you should enjoy planning, enjoy your wedding, do what makes you happy, don't check the weather, etc. Instead, I'll share with you something one of my BMs who has been married 25 years told me that put everything into perspective:

In 25 years, you won't think about what color dress your MIL wore, what kind of food you had at the CH, who wasn't there, etc. The one thing you WILL remember about your wedding day is the look on your husband's face as you walk down the aisle to marry him.

I swear, it is true. I put so much effort into little details that no one noticed. I worried about missing RSVPs. I dealt with my MIL saying nasty things after the wedding. All that I think about when I think of the wedding is the look on his face and just how much FUN we had. It was OUR day and it was so wonderful! And for the girls who think that they will lose the moment of DH's face as you walk down the aisle because you're taking pics beforehand, you won't. We did pics beforehand, and yes, I was so giddy for DH to see me. But we still had that WOW and OMG factor as I walked down the aisle. We both felt it and will treasure it forever.

Lots of luck, love and health to all of you beautiful '08 brides!!! Can't wait to see your weddings!

ETA: You will fight with your DH about all sorts of stuff during the planning. When you do, stop and remember you are where you are because HE asked YOU to marry him. Try not to take things out on each other.

O gosh!

I have so much to add. Let's see where I will start.

To me what was important for me are the little details. Everyone will remember that little something they never seen before. It makes a lasting impression for all. I made sure to do all the little things I seen without going overboard. If I saw a unique idea that someone did for their wedding. I would spend hours tweaking to make the idea my own.

Things will happen on your wedding day that you would never imagine. As much as we stress day in and out to make sure that everything runs smoothly, things will happen. My limo company almost brought me to tears but I had to tell myself, NO ONE will ruin my day.

Hire a DOC. I know at the beginning it seems like such an expense that is not worth it, but after you see on that day how many little things need to be orchrastrated, you will wish you had. Believe it or not not everyone know how to pin on a Bout.

Enjoy every second of it. My day did not fly by for me because I would not let it. I took in every second as if it were my last.

Best of luck to the 08'ers and I will be here to help anyway I can

Re: To the 08'ers with love … … … from the 07'ers

WOW, all the girls gave such great advice, I don't know what I can add!

If you read the whole thread, you will realize certain things that are said again and again, enjoy yourself. Enjoy the engagment, planning, the wedding and your FH. You will see who people are because weddings bring out the best and worst in people.

If you want to wear a huge taffeta purple dress, then do it! It is yours and FH's wedding, do something to make it yours, but your and Fh's,it's his wedding too.
If you want to do every DIY then do so, and don't letanyone tell you it doesn't matter. Of course if they are not thereno one willmiss them, but if they are there people will notice. I had a ton of DIY's and people noticed.

Have fun, if your definiton of fun is table traveling then do so, if it is dancing then stay on the dance floor!!! DH and I had many discussions on seeing everyone at CH to say Hi,so I didn't have to table hop at the reception, but I never got that chance. I managed to say hello to all 206 guests and dance for hours! I saw 40people at the Rehersal dinner,so I said aquick hello and thank you for coming and then I wasoff to the other 166 people I didn't get to see the night before!

If you feel yourself getting stressed, take a step back and ask if it is worth it. Ask for help! I didn't and stressedmyselfabit, when I finally did get help, I wondered why I waitedso long

Like so many other brides have said if something goes wrong, it will not ruin your day, try not to stress, it will be ther best day of your lives.

Congrats to all future brides and happy (and stress-free) planning!!!

Re: To the 08'ers with love … … … from the 07'ers

1) get Video! As most people said above... you really do forget a lot of your day almost immediatley. It was a total blur since you are so overwhelmed. The video helped us actually see all the time we put into everything.

2) Pick a course of the meal and if you need to say hello to everyone.. do it then. We chose to skip our pasta course and speed through the tables thanking people then. This way.. we were done thanking people before the party really got going. (we had about 180 people so we were fast!) lol

3) dance a lot... especially towards the end. A lot of people will expect you to say goodbye too. If you aren't dancing.. you will spend the last half hour or so of your wedding now kissing everyone again saying goodbye. I was having so much fun dancing that I hardly said goodbye to anyone! lol That wasn't really my plan but it definitely worked!

4) make sure all of your vendors know where they have to be and when and with what. I had a situation w/ my florist the day of the wedding where i think they sent my flowers to a different hall (eventually got there but i was stressing big time)

5)Have a list of all your vendors and contact information w/ you the day of the wedding and also give a copy to your hall as well as another family member. If something goes wrong, you will have all the information to call who you need to to...fast!

6)definitely bring comfy shoes w/ you for the reception... i wore shoes w/ just a slight heel and my feet still were killing me by the main course. I brought white bedtime slippers w/ me that had some satin on them. Nobody saw them and my feet thanked me ; )

There are just so many things I can't even think of right now.. but most of all have fun planning and enjoy your days! It was the most fun time of my life planning the wedding so visit vendors...go to bridal shows... shop for dresses... pick out songs...enjoy all of it.. because this thread (from the 08's to the 09's) will be here before you know it!

Happy 2008

Re: To the 08'ers with love … … … from the 07'ers

The other 07's gave a lot of great advice. Your day will be here before you know it. I was still in disbelief the morning of right up until my dress went on...then it hit me that it was really happening. This is what I learned from my experiences:

-Make sure to take a step back throughout your day and just soak it all in. I had always heard that the day would fly by and be one big blur. It really was. I wish I had taken more time to try and remember everything. I was dancing towards the end of the night and before I knew it, I looked around and almost everyone was gone. The night felt like it only lasted a half hour. Soak in the ceremony, see your reception room all set up before everyone comes in, and try to spend time together alone after the ceremony. These are all precious little things that I will always treasure. This leads me to my next bit of advice:

-If you are thinking about getting a video, do it. DH and I can't wait to see ours because there were a lot of things (like our ceremony) that we want to re-live.

-Being that we were getting married at the reception hall in the evening, we did not want to miss out on daylight pictures or have to rush to take pictures and miss our cocktail hour. If these are your concerns as well, you should really consider seeing each other before the ceremony. We set up a meeting place at a local park in Valley Stream on this little bridge. The photographer and video guy caught the whole thing and only our families and BP were there to witness it. I have pictures in my album. This was the highlight of my entire day. It was an incredible feeling to walk up behind him and then see his face and be able to hug and kiss him. This also calmed my nerves and it was so much fun to spend the day with DH and not have to rush our pictures. Before the ceremony we got to all chill out in our bridal suite. This didn't take away from going down the aisle either. That was such a surreal experience. It made the day that much better and I would do it again in a heartbeat.

-This is your day so do what you want. Weddings have a way of bringing out the best and worst in people. I am still shocked at some people's behavior. I lost some relationships during this time, but I also learned who really cares about us. We got a lot of grief for not wanting little kids to attend even though it was a late reception. We even had cousins that didn't attend or even RSVP back because they were so mad at us. They ended up not attending and although I was upset at first, you know what? It's their loss. We also had people laugh at some of the ideas we had such as making our centerpieces, making our own menus, and naming our tables after countries or places we have traveled to together. We ended up getting so many compliments at how much people enjoyed how we personalized our wedding. So take the time, if you have it, to make petal cones or slipper baskets if that is what you want. Just don't stress yourself out with trying to do it all. Your day will fly by and you might not notice the things you have added, but your guests will.

-To add to this being your day. I got looked at funny when I said I was only having a MOH and a BM. To each their own, but I would have ended up with a HUGE bridal party if I included everyone and I was only inviting 150 people. I was happy to just have my sister and DH's best friend. Getting ready it was just me, my sister, mom, and aunt. The day was so relaxing and calm. Do what makes you happy. I'm glad I did it this way and didn't hurt anyone's feelings by leaving people out. I viewed it as the less stress, the better.

-I worried about so much before the wedding...should I wear my veil all night, when to bustle my gown, what songs should I use, what if this person does this or wears that, what if this happens or that happens, what if it rains, what about going to the bathroom??? The list of what ifs can go on and on. You know what, I didn't care that day. I was in a state of pure bliss and shock that the day was really here. The veil stayed on all night, going to the bathroom (only once thankfully and yes it is easier to face the opposite way towards the back of the toilet when you sit down), and everything else just had a funny way of working out. All my stress and planning for a year and half just fell into place. I promise this will happen for you too. If things do go wrong, just look at your new husband and remember what the day is really about.

-Take care of yourself and your relationship. This will be a very stressful and exciting year that will fly by. Make sure you spend time with your FH outside of wedding planning. Don't let it consume you all the time. Take time to talk about other things and do things not wedding related. The day before the wedding we went for a couples massage together. This was a great way to relieve the stress that we were both feeling. We also made sure to have a good breakfast the morning of and had our maitre d pull us away from whoever we were talking with when our dinner came out. Enjoy that dinner with your new husband!

-Let your vendors know exactly what you want and don't want and go over everything numerous times. I'm glad I did this because they had a few things wrong and everything went off perfectly at the wedding (and if it didn't...I didn't notice). Just remember to trust your instincts... I didn't with this one particular vendor on here and almost got stuck without a dress a month before my wedding. That will be included in my review that I am working on.

-Have a day of emergency kit. I brought make up, crazy glue, a sewing kit, bobby pins, hair spray, flip flops, a Tide stick, and all kinds of medications...just in case. Most of it got used at some point. I also made sure to take two Advils in the morning. Thankfully the headache didn't come until we got to the hotel.

-If you can, leave for your honeymoon a few days after the wedding. I don't know what I would have done if I had to deal with the stress of packing and getting ready for our almost 3 week honeymoon right after the wedding. We had our wedding on a Sunday and left that Saturday. Yeah, it wasn't fun going back to work for a few days, but I was so happy to have a nice relaxing week after the wedding to gradually pack and get ready to leave. I was also tired beyond anything I had ever experienced for days after the wedding.

Sorry this is so long. I remember reading the 06's advice to us and now I can really see what they meant with a lot of things. Just remember what the day is really about, you and your FH. We had moments where we said we wished we just eloped and being that we paid for it on our own, we faced some financial stress as well. Afterwards, at the hotel, we turned to each other and said we were truly blessed to have been able to experience such an amazing day. Things will work out and fall into place. Your days will be here before you know it!! Enjoy this time of being engaged with your FH. Congrats ladies!!!! Here is to your year!!

I remember reading this post to us '07'ers from the 06'ers at this time last year like it was yesterday. Please take all of these words to heart.....

My advice: Enjoy it and savor EVERY moment....even the stressful ones. Just stop and remember all of them and realize that you will never be able to get them back. I know you have heard it before, but it goes soooooo fast! Think about where you will be at this time next year......

Good luck and happy planning to all of you! I hope we will be able to help you on your journey!
