THE OFFICIAL What You Need to Get Hitched Legally Thread. everyone about to get their marriage license, breathe and read: [now includes info you need for AFTER the wedding]

you will need the following:

*A CERTIFIED, 'STATE' COPY WITH RAISED/OFFICIAL SEAL of your birth certificate.

the one from the hospital DOES NOT count. if you do not have one, find out what COUNTY you were born in and contact them....if in NY, possibly the TOWN as well...you can also get this from 'the state' but it might take longer. If you are from out of state living in NY and NO ONE can get it for you in person [parents] then you have 2 options: wait 6-8 weeks OR pay a fee to have it faster. google your state/county/town hall's vital records and it will have the info on their website.

OR

*YOUR CURRENT PASSPORT

AND YOU WILL NEED:

YOUR DRIVER'S LICENSE.

some halls will accept a baptismal record in place of a birth certificate or passport...to be sure of what you specifially need, contact the town hall you are going to FIRST and ask. Call them NOW even if you are 6 months away from your wedding to prevent problems at the last minute

also, if either of you is divorced, you will need the offiical divorce decree as well to prove that marriage is anulled/divorced/finished!

there is no blood test in NY

a marriage license is good for 60 days

it is NOT good until 24 hours have passed from its issuing.

the cost is $40.

and if after the wedding you do not receive your certificate within 4 weeks, contact the town/city hall where you got the license from.

you can also bring the following:

Naturalization record OR
Census record

AND

Employment picture ID OR
Immigration record

but the first items are more popular and most appreciated by the town halls....it's just easier when it's the 'normal stuff.'

*******Smithtown Town Hall: you will also need something with your Social Security number on it. It can be your SS card, a pay stub, W-2 form, or health insurance card.

GOOD LUCK TO ALL!!!!

HOPE THIS HELPS SOME OF YOU!!!

link on LIW where most of this came from. the rest of it came from going to get my marriage license!

don't trust an 'article'? this LIW article is actually from the state of NY website:
link where LIW got their info...it is word for word.

NAME CHANGING LINK FOR DMV...FORM YOU CAN DOWNLOAD, PRINT AND FILL OUT PRIOR TO GOING. FOR AFTER THE WEDDING.

for name changes at the DMV, all you need is your OLD/CURRENT license, your marriage certificate [the official one that is mailed to you 2-3 weeks (or longer depending on the location you acquired it from) from the Town Hall] and the $10 fee for the new license!

SOCIAL SECURITY LOCATION FINDER LINK

LINK TO FORM YOU NEED FOR THE SS OFFICE

for name changes at SS, all you need is your marriage certificate AND the form filled out.

I highly rec. the Melville location. You can use ANY location to get a new card...so you don't have to wait forever in Mineola. In fact, while I was waiting in Melville, the lady at the window told a girl who was 3 ahead of me that it was fine that she didn't live in Melville/the area and that she would be waiting for HOURS at Mineola...so they know Mineola is a mess!

BANK AND OTHER PLACES:

Well, this one will depend on each institution's own requirements. Many have stated that calling their credit card company was sufficient...my bank only needed my new license and marriage license. I happened to have my temp. license at the time, my OLD license [they gave it back to me at the DMV] and my marriage license. They didn't need or want my SS info. Just call or stop by all the other places you need to change your name at to see what you need...but it's most helpful if you just have these things together in the first place and take it all to each place.

HTH!!!!
NYC RESIDENTS: NAME CHANGE INFO/SS
*You must use the SS office in your borough. You unfortunately cannot use the LI locations.

Re: everyone about to get their marriage license, breathe and read:

Can you apply for this at any time, does it have to be within a certian time frame of the wedding? Do you receive it before the wedding with the wedding date on it that makes it official on that date?

thanks

No more than 60 days before the wedding (expires after 60 days) with a minimum of 24 hours prior to the wedding day.

Once you are within 60 days of the wedding, you can go to your town hall and apply for it. You receive it immediately/walk out with it. You just have to wait a day to use it.

yes.

in part, yes. this topic seems to come up in tiny explosions and girls ask different questions and usually ONE giant answer is never displayed. bits and pieces get put out, but never one giant 'here's all you need to know/do' at once..you and hallowedding inspired it....that and i'm boycotting work.

Does anyone have any information about marrying a non-citizen? My FH is Canadian, he has Permanet Alien Resident status here but a Canadian birth certificate and no passport (he isn't eligible). I'm not sure what they'd accept as ID or if they'll be extra legal paperwork.

Re: THE OFFICIAL What You Need to Get Hitched Legally Thread. everyone about to get their marriage license, breathe and read:

CLMON - can you update your original post to include this little fact about getting a license at Smithtown Town Hall: you will also need something with your Social Security number on it. It can be your SS card, a pay stub, W-2 form, or health insurance card.

Of course we didn't have anything with our SS#s on it, so we had to race home and then race back to Town Hall. Thankfully one of the clerks was nice and took us in at 4:50 when they close at 5 - much to the other clerk's chagrin.
