CLMON - can you update your original post to include this little fact about getting a license at Smithtown Town Hall: you will also need something with your Social Security number on it. It can be your SS card, a pay stub, W-2 form, or health insurance card.

Of course we didn't have anything with our SS#s on it, so we had to race home and then race back to Town Hall. Thankfully one of the clerks was nice and took us in at 4:50 when they close at 5 - much to the other clerk's chagrin.

WOW. I can honestly say that NOW I am a 'pro' at this stuff! I hope this information proves valuable and useful to you all. I hope you save it to your notebook [even if you already have] since I changed the title. I added the name change info. b/c let's face it...once you're married, you'll be back to ask all this stuff again!!!


This has all been a slight headache for me...but hopefully this info. makes it seamless for other brides!!!

FYI, some halls (NYC for example) only require 1 form of picture ID. You do NOT need a birth certificate.

Also, for SS name changes, you can go to any SS office except if you live in Brooklyn. All Brooklyn residents must use the Brooklyn SS office.

actually, all NYC residents must go to the SS office in their respective borough.

as far as the # of IDs, since MOST require 2, that's the info i used [and the info the state uses] to give out. there is also the disclaimer to call your particular hall b/c some require more or don't accept certain forms of ID that others do accept.
