To the 08'ers with love … … … from the 07'ers

Original post by PreshusSmurf

With just barely over 1 week until it is officially 'YOUR YEAR,' here are some words of advice from one the old married ladies on the 07 board … The other girls plan to add to this thread as well.

Your Day, Your Way
Whatever you do, no matter who is paying for what part of the wedding, don't forget that the day is supposed to be about you & your FH. And the love that the two of you share, which is what got you to this point in the first place. Don't loose sight of that, put your personal stamp on everything and make sure it reflects your taste and personality. Even when someone tells you they're not sure they love the flowers you picked, or she thinks she likes something about 'the other dress' more, or 'what do you mean you're not wearing heels?' Do what feels right to you. Do what makes you happy. Do it your way!

The Bridal Party
* Don't allow you & your FH to be bullied into asking people to be Bridesmaids or Groomsmen. Keep it small and intimate (less members = less stress), and only ask the people you know you will always have in your lives. Just because you used to be close, or you were in their bridal party doesn't mean they have to be in your Bridal Party. Make your selections wisely.

* Be kind to them, and they will be kind back. What goes around comes around, and Karma is a b!tch!!!

* I've always found it ridiculous when Brides make crazy demands of their girls. Especially about hairstyle, makeup, shoes, nails. I provided information about my hairstylist/makeup artist, but did not insist that anyone have anything professionally done. They asked how to wear their hair, I responded to them they should do whatever they wanted as long as they felt beautiful. Who cares if you were planning to wear your hair in an up-do, its not like anyone will confuse who is the bride & a bridesmaid!! When they asked what shoes to wear, my only request is that they were brown (the color of their dresses) & comfortable. It’s a long day for the bridal party too, if they're not comfortable with what they're wearing or how they look, they'll be a lot less likely to smile in your expensive pictures!

* Pregnancy is a wonderful life event and is meant to be celebrated. Never ask anyone to plan their pregnancy around your wedding day. My MOH and one of my BMs were pregnant at our wedding. Congratulate them. Tell them how wonderful it is, what a blessing it is, and that you hope it will bring you & your FH lots of luck when it is your turn. And do whatever you can to help accommodate them with picking the dress … even if they will be far enough along that a maternity style will be necessary.

Ignore The Weather
Out of every aspect of wedding planning, this is the ONE thing you have ABSOLUTELY NO CONTROL OVER WHATSOEVER! Make sure you have a Plan B incase it is gross out that day, and then leave it up to fate. Checking the almanac and the weather 100 times the week of the wedding will not change anything. Most likely the forecast will be wrong anyway. And if it does rain/snow/hail, take comfort in knowing that some of the best photos on these boards were taken in the rain. Rainy Day Pictures

Get it in Writing
Now I know this sounds like common sense, but sometimes during wedding planning you get caught up in the emotion of everything and common sense flies out the window! The BM we booked with mysteriously disappeared after we booked our wedding, without warning or notice. Foolishly, we had left a few very important details with a verbal agreement and a handshake. Neither means anything if the BM went back to Argentina or now works at another hall. If we had put those in writing, it would have saved us a lot of hassle and unnecessary stress.

Hire a DOC
Make sure she's reliable, reputable and on the ball … and it will save you tons of headaches on the big day. I can't even believe that I wasn't planning to have a DOC, I'm not sure I could have gotten through the day without her. They will be there to make sure everything is setup just how you imagined it to be, and to handle any last minute emergency or crisis that comes up.

Get a Video
We don't have ours back yet, but I can't wait to see it. The day went by so quickly, and is such a blur in my memory. My Aunt was there with her video camera and *promised* to send us the footage so we could see it as soon as we got back from the honeymoon, but her husband ended up recording over our ceremony with footage of her dancing with one of her sisters. Even if you don't pay for the editing, just spend the money to have it professionally captured on video.

Get the 2nd Photographer
While I do love my proofs and think our photographer did a good job, I just wish there were more of them. Shots from a different angle, shots of other people's reactions as things were happening, more candid pictures. I thought I wanted to add a photojournalist, but was talked out of it. I should have trusted my 'Bride Instinct.' Also … please remember that not every single picture that is taken that day is going to be perfect. The girls on this site post the BEST out of hundreds of proofs. Please don't set yourself up for disappointment thinking ALL your pictures will be as perfect as the ones you see on LIW.

Soak It All In
A few times throughout the evening, take a moment with your brand new Hubby to look around the room, and absorb everything going on around you. Everyone there in that room took the time out of their life to be there for you. Feel the love in the room. Look around and see all the personal details and personal touches that you worked so hard to create.

Eat!
If you don't you'll pass out! You will be served first. Sit down with your new Hubby and eat a few bites. Most halls give you the option of having a little of everything (or whatever menu options you want). So, eat for nourishment. And eat to enjoy your wedding food that you worked so hard to pick out. And eat so when your Great Aunt Mildred complains that the chicken was dry or the steak was too rare, you can rest assured that either she's the only one or that she's crazy!

Dance!
Dance like there's no tomorrow! there isn't ... there's only 1 wedding day! Spend as much time as you possibly can on the dance floor celebrating. I promise you will never look back on your wedding and say you danced too much. You might, however, look back and say 'I spent too much time going around to the tables' or 'I spent too much time taking posed family pictures.' Its your party and you should enjoy it!

Write a Review
And start it NOW! Write it in Word and save it on your computer. As you go through the next year of planning your wedding, there will be vendors who you forget the details of your dealings as you get closer to the day. You can always go back and edit it before posting on the site. Reviews from 06'ers and before helped me out so much when planning my wedding, they're a way of making sure to 'Pay It Forward' to the future LIW brides. mine is still a work in progress, i promise to post it very soon.

Re: To the 08'ers with love … … … from the 07'ers

Here's what I learned on my day:

-Leave a lot of time for pictures. I had so much fun taking pictures, but we were so rushed we didn't get to take half as many as I would have liked.

-As a lot of other ladies have already said, do things your way! Who cares if your aunt thinks a buffet is tacky or that orange flowers are weird. Plan a day that will be FUN for you. If you're happy everyone else will follow suit.

-Assign someone else as the 'go-to' in case anything goes wrong that day (and something will). Even if you have a DOC, tell them that all problems go to the MOH or someone you trust. I had a DOC but she came to me about every problem and I had a melt down by the end of the night. Things will go wrong, but it won't matter if you don't know!

-Most Importantly, enjoy everything. You only get to be the bride once, and it should be fun. Eventually I'll forget all of the little things that went wrong and the stress of the weeks before. But I'll never forget how many people told me I looked happier that day than ever before. I even had a friend tell me that she'd never seen true love until that day! Those are the compliments and memories that will last forever.

Congratulations and enjoy every minute of your day!

Re: To the 08'ers with love … … … from the 07'ers

WOW...I can't believe 07 is almost over...What an AMAZING YEAR!!!! Here are a few pieces of advice.

Weddings show people's true colors, families, friends and co-workers. My DH and I learned a lot of hard lessons and frienships were strengthened and broken. STAY STRONG!! PICK YOUR BATTLES because you can't fight all of them and decide what is a PRIORITY and what is not!

Once the rehearsal dinner begins WEDDING PLANNING IS OVER!!!! Enjoy your rehearsal dinner, this is when we got to see all of our family that came in from out of town to see us. It was a wonderful and special night!

SLEEP.....................the night before your wedding. I had barely been sleeping the weeks before my wedding because we also bought a house and moved in the weekend before the wedding RIDICULOUS....but worth it!!
I slept 8 hours staright the night before my wedding, no ambiem or sleeping aids I WAS EXHAUSTED!!!

The morning of the wedding give your cell phone to one of your bridesmaids to screen your calls. I had a few vendors call last minute for questions as well as guest and my silly DH. DON'T GET ON THE PHONE!!!!!!! She can answer the questions and if she doesn't know the answer she can ask you but DO NOT GET ON THE PHONE..This is YOUR DAY!!!!

EAT BREAKFAST........AND EAT WHAT YOU WANT!!! YOU WILL STILL FIT IN YOUR DRESS!!
My parents were awesome, my dad made bacon and eggs and toast for everyone that morning and my mom got chocolate croissants....mmmm my favorite.....and lots of little goodies. You've been so good all year that today is the day to splurge. I knew I was going to be so excited in the morning that in order for me to eat it would have to be something I REALLY LOVED.....Get some chocolate croissants!

Have a few mimosa's while your getting ready!! I was so anxious and excited for the wedding to start that I was running in circles. The ladies at the hair salon were so cute and made sure I had a few mimosas to relax me but not get me tipsy!

DRINK WATER.......I didn't drink enough water the day of my wedding and although it was seasonable cool on my wedding day...78 and no humidity in JULY!!! I GOT DEHYDRATED!!!! By 9 pm that night I still hadn't gone to the bathroom since early that morning and I started to get dizzy and lightheaded. My wonderful DH took me into the bridal suite and had me put my feet up and drink 3 bottles of water and after 20 minutes I felt better, but thats 20 minutes of the reception that I lost because I was dumb and didn't drink anough water.

Dance more than your first dance with your DH. We picked out 3 more songs that were special to us, one we dance right after cutting the cake. It was nice to slow dance a few times during the night and 're-group'.

Let your DH have a say in planning the wedding. We all know that we spend half our lives planning our weddings and although I doubt our men do, they do have some ideas of their own. My DH DESPERATELY wanted tails, top hats and canes That's all he wanted, was it my first choice, NO!! But it made him happy and excited and it was his wedding!! He didn't get a say in my dress right So let them have a say even if its a silly thing like tails, top hats and canes! If it makes them happy, and they like what they are wearing, then they will be more than happy to pose for endless pictures!!

If you can, don't leave for your honeymoon right away, I know this is not something that everyone can do. We were very lucky to be able to take a 3 week honeymoon and I'm so glad we did!! When will we ever be able to spend 3 weeks alone ever again, especially since we wil begin TTC next year

We left for our honeymoon 2 days after the wedding which allowed us to spend some more ttime with out of town family and we were able to pack after the wedding not before. It's not like I wasn't doing enough before the wedding that I had time to pack after the wedding.

I highly recomend staying at a cute bed and breakfast for a few days to re-coup if you are doing a lot of excursions for our honeymoon. We went to a cute bed in breakfasy in Melbourne, FL. DH had stayed there a few times on buissness. We literally slept and ate for 3 days there, WE WERE EXHAUSTED. But at the end of the three days we were ready to party and really enjoy our honeymoon. We followed that by a few night in South Beach, a Caribean Cruise, and a week in Key West, FL!! SO MUCH FUN!!!

Last but not least, back to the wedding day. ENJOY YOUR DAY!!! Look in your DH's eyes when your walking down the aisle. Look in his eyes and feel the words when you say your vows!! Have fun taking pictures!!! We went to a playground and I got on a swing and slide in my wedding dress, who cares, YOUR NEVER GOING TO WEAR IT AGAIN!! But we had soooooo much fun with our bridal party doing pictures because of this and got some AMAZING SHOTS!!
EAT DRINK AND BE MERRY at your reception!! It's YOUR PARTY!! ENJOY IT!! We didn't walk around to tables at the wedding, we did a reception line at church. If people wanted to say 'Hi' they can come to me and say hi while i'm dancing, eating or partying!!!

My last piece is in the middle of the chaos and fun, grab your DH's hand a few times during the night and look around, FEEL the LOVE, HAPPINESS AND JOY that surrounds you on that day! They are there for YOU. Keep those feelings close to your heart and use them during 'tougher' times!

CONGRATULATIOS BRIDES OF 2008!!! IT'S YOUR TURN

Re: To the 08'ers with love … … … from the 07'ers

This is what I wrote on the 07 advice thread....I'll just repost for you ladies

*Carry your everyday lip gloss with you.....I wore the lipstick put on by the make-up artist for the ceremony & for some pictures but by the time I got to the milleridge I wiped it off and put on my everyday lip gloss and it was so much better!! (it was the mac colorstay...that stays on REALLY well but I felt like from kissing/talking & drinking it got a little chalky feeling) Go with something you love to wear everyday & hold it b/c you do a lot of kissing!!

*Take a moment, stand at your dais and just stare at your family & friends enjoying themselves. DH & I did that I got a little teary watching everyone. You put so much time & effort into planning and it's nice to see your guests loving all of it

*Of course....take a moment with just you and your DH....we made it down to our cocktail hour but towards the end of it...we ran upstairs and our maitre'D and Bridal attendant kept bringing us plates and plates of everything from our CH & it was SO NICE to sit there without someone pulling you here and pulling you there. We sat up there for a good 20 minutes.

* Do your table greetings before dinner....we made it to every single table before everyones meals came and it was golden!!

* We did our parents dances in the beginning and I loved that idea...(i stole it from my sister)....we had our first dance...then guests sat down and had there appetizers.....then salads (or whatever order that should be in)...then right before the intermezzo we did parent dances & I loved doing that b/c then it didn't stop the party later in the night. I thought that with the cake cutting...garter toss....BoK toss....viennesse hour...the end of the night dancing would've been cut off. So that's just a thought for some of you!

* Bring safety pins for your bustle...forget about the little strings and the tiny button holding it all night....at least it didn't work for me. Towards the end of the night, I was literally holding my dress in my hand b/c it was just easier then having people step on it (mostly guys!!!!!!) and the bustle coming off. It was so annoying lol

*During dinner when a slow song comes on and no one is looking....dance with your husband. We did that at ours and it was such a special moment b/c everyone was to busy eating that some didn't realize we were up dancing & it was so perfect.

* I kept my veil on all night & I love that for pictures. Surprisingly, I thought it would annoy me or make me hot but it didn't which is why I just kept it on.

* no matter what take 2 advils that morning.....I wish I had.....by the end of the night (when guests were leaving) I developed a killer migraine & I wish I had taken two that morning.

*Try to avoid guests making circles around you & DH everytime you two begin dancing with ecahother LOL I finally was like 'NO MORE CIRCLES!!' please!! lol

*OH and when someone requests a song on your 'do not ever' playlist...just play it....who cares. Someone on DH's side brought PROPS for the YMCA (I kid you not lol) & it turned out to be one of the funniest moments of the night. My DJ came up to me and asked for permission and at first I was like 'ummmmm seriously...the YMCA & props?? ohhhh what the hell!' My crazy brother, my brother in law and Matt were HILARIOUS up there. Seeing DH with a leather vest on almost made me pee my pants! (ok, not literally!!)

*Lastly....don't feel like you have to go down and party more after your wedding is over at the bar everyone went too. It's such a long, exhausting, overwhelming, happy, best day of your life day that everyone will understand if you don't show up. (we didn't! haha & everyone was like.....we totally figured you two wouldn't come down!)

HAVE FUN, DON'T STOP DANCING EVER!!!!

Re: To the 08'ers with love … … … from the 07'ers

I cant believe that 07 is almost over.

My advice would be-take it all in. That day you only really have seconds to look around and see all the hard work you have done, every chance you get do that.
Do it your way, if you want something do it. Dont let anyone bully you into not doing something b/c they dont think its necessary. You will regret it. If you impulse is telling you its what you want, then it is!
Enjoy yourself. YES the norm is to go around and say hi and TY to everyone, I didnt. I went around quick said hello and that was it. I wanted to enjoy it and I did. DH isnt a dancer to he conversed with everyone so I could enjoy myself.

HAVE FUN!!!

Time after time I would say I wish we were married, the stress is too much, i hate this planning, why didnt we elope...now I would love to go back and do it all again. So really try to enjoy it, b/c it goes faster then you think!!

Good Luck Ladies....Im sure that all of you weddings will be out of this world

*go to your CH - DH and I did all of our hellos so we did not go from table to table - whoever wanted to talk to us found us!
*hire a doc - it was the best thing - i didnt need to worry about what time it was - where the tiop $$ was...
*ENJOY, ENJOY, ENJOY!!!!!!!! HAVE FUN, HAVE FUN HAVE FUN!!

Re: To the 08'ers with love … … … from the 07'ers

1. I LOVE the 5ft Rule (mentioned earlier in the thread by Melissa) and Second that!

2. I hear a lot of people say that getting professional video is a must. My advice is that if you can afford it than great GO FOR IT! If you can't (like us), ask someone to bring their camera and tape...even if it's just for the ceremony. We asked one person and FOUR ended up taping for us. They came out great! I am so very greatful for this. I think I would be alittle upset now if I had paid a ton of money to have it taped and we didn't even really need it.

3. If people are having 'after party' stuff after the reception GO! We had such a great time at the after party. The reception wen't so fast that we didn't get to spead much time with people.....and this was our time to just kick back and enjoy our friends/family.

4. DANCE YOUR *** OFF at the reception! And dance with your husband. Overall just enjoy it, cause it's over in a blink!

5. Try to have your period scheduled so it doesn't land on your big day! I kept putting this off and never visited the gyno for some birth control to dely it and it came the night before the wedding. I was up all night with terrible cramps. Of course I didn't even really think about it much the day of....but would have rathered not have it of course.

ALL THE BEST TO ALL OF THE 08' BRIDES!!!! IT'S YOUR YEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: To the 08'ers with love … … … from the 07'ers

My Advice:

SLEEP! I did not get much sleep the night before and though I had adrenaline keeping me going, I felt like in the limo from picture to dinner.

DON'T GET DRUNK THE NIGHT BEFORE!! My sister, SIL And one of my best friends took me out to dinner and a trendy bar the night before. True, we were home by 9 or so, but I was DRUNK! I know DH went out for drinks the night before too and it shows in our pics. We look like a tired bride and groom!

DON'T LOSE WEIGHT AFTER THE FINAL FITTING!!!

I did, and my dress was too big on top!

HAVE A TRUSTED PERSON TAKE CARE OF YOUR STUFF!!

i lost my veil.

Well i'm sure my fellow 07ers have mentioned just about everything......but one thing i really can not STRESS enough..

The 5 Ft. Rule - when you have your big days, you have so many family and friends who are wanting to pull you in so many directions to chat and take pics and such. its VERY easy to sometimes separate from your new hubby and go to 'your' guests and he goes to his....DON'T DO THIS!!!! This is where the 5 ft. rule comes into play. No matter what happens, do your best NOT to separate from your guy, hold hands as much as possible and always be within a few feet of each other. The reason I say this is because your photographer might need you for some more pics---or for a dance---cake cutting---etc. If you are not close to one another, then you have to take the time to find the other one!

DH and I kept to this rule---and it worked great so that no one had to find us for anything. If I needed him, I just had to shout 'Where's my HUSBAND!' and he would say 'My wife is calling!' and come running.

ETA: Someone else mentioned it--but I wanted to say it again---make sure after the ceremony you have a couple minutes just your man and you---those first few minutes feel so amazing knowing you are FINALLY husband and wife!!!!!

AND..........make sure you ask the matire d' to let you into the room before the guests do for the reception. to be in the room and see it set up---there are just no words....its a great feeling that can NOT be described!

******GOOD LUCK TO EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOU LADIES!!!!!! This year will FLY by and the next thing you know you'll be doing THIS for the 09ers.***********

MELISSA I LOOOOOOOOVE YOUR 5 ft rule!!! I totally will be doing that!!!

THANK YOU EVERYONE FOR ALL YOUR ADVICE!!!! I BOOKMARKED THIS THREAD!!! IT will be my bible in march i swear!!!! And CONGRATS TO ALL OF YOU!!!! YOU ALL HAD AMAZING WEDDINGS!!!! SERIOUSLY- I know I could NOT have planned mine without your wisdom and advice! SO THANK YOU AND MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!

i love it too!!!!

Re: To the 08'ers with love … … … from the 07'ers

hi everyone...

I'd also like to wish all the 08'ers the best year of their lives, and wonderful wedding days.....

My advice is really simple:
don't skimp on vendors. A 'bargain' vendor is usually like that for a reason. ( For example, we extended our flower budget, and cut down on the amount of flowers for our church, but got an AMAZING florist. And our flowers looked gorgeous.) so in the end, the 2nd photographer, the better bakery, the better alterations shop, the better limo... they're all worth it.... becuase you don't have to worry about their professionalism.

most of all, on the big day, don't manage your vendors. Either get a relative/friend to do it, get a DOC, or just let everyone go on autopilot (like I did). If something goes wrong, LAUGH IT OFF!

all the preparations were for you to have an enjoyable wedding with your friends and family. If you get irritated becuase your hair is wrong, or the flowers are a bit faded looking, you are ruining your own wedding and memories. If you shrug it off and say 'oh well' and enjoy yourself, your wedding will be amazing, and you'll look happy in your pics. Also, this means you should eat, dance, and party, not be dragged around to do tons of toasts, pictures, and other things. IMO, it's not worth it to miss your CH simply to get an introduction.... the CH has so much good food and you're missing a lot of fun! Treat yourselves as guests at your own reception. Dance and eat until you can't move!

Final suggestion: buy a camcorder and give it to your friend/family member. They'll be back-up for your video guy. Also, ask for non-pro pics from friends/family. We got pics and video from the perspective of my co-workers, college friends, in-laws, my family.... each focused on a different set of guests... it was great.

Also, the camcorder is priceless on the HM

enjoy your year

My advice:

*When we were done taking pictures we began to go to the bridal suite. Our MD asked if we wanted the wedding party there. I said of course, I want to hang out with them. As we walk up the stairs, I hear them all talking loudly and they are trying to get chairs from other rooms. I immediately tell the MD to get them out of there. I already had a headache starting to creep up and I needed to relax. DH and I were able to relax for about an hour before the CH. There were no friends, family or photographers. It was great. We ate a little bit, took some advil, and just relaxed. If you have the opportunity to do this, please do so. It really did recharge us and we were ready to greet everyone with smiles.

*Be specific with what you want in your bok. I showed them pics and all but my bms boks were the wrong colors.

*Do not stress about the small things. In the long run, they do not matter. So what if my BMs boks were not exactly what I wanted. It annoyed me, but I was certainly not going to allow it to ruin my day.

Good Luck Ladies!!! Enjoy your year!!!!

I second this!! Especially the part about taking time to relax with your DH before the reception hooplah. We kicked our family and BP out of the bridal suite so that we could just have a few minutes to ourselves. They were totally understanding and more than happy to give us some breathing room and alone time. I cherish those moments!
ALSO< toward the end of our reception DH and I snuck outside on the patio of the Bourne Mansion to be alone. We had such perfect weather. We could hear the band playing 'The Way You Look Tonight' from the ballroom, so we started dancing together. We were completely alone with the breeze and the sound of the water and music in the air. It was one of the most romantic moments of the entire day and one that DH and I will never forget. The only people who knew we were outside were our photographers and Maitre D.

SOOO all this to say, be absolutely sure to step back and look around at all your guests having a great time. Take a deep breath and soak it all in. Then make sure to have alone time with DH!

Best Wishes to all you 08 girls!!!

I already told FH about this rule and he totally agreed with it. I can already see how easy it can be to get separated from our eparty

Hmm... 07 girls have so much advice I'm not sure what I could add...
Most of all just have fun. Your wedding is about you and your fh. It's a day that will be just what you want no matter who is paying and no matter what battles may arise. The day seems to go just what you always dreamed and the speed goes just the way you want it too as well. When you eat dinner just look around and see how beautiful it all looks.

Things will get a lil tough/stressful right before but just know it is not the way it will always be. Once you get through them you will be thankful on how close you and your FH have become.

Life moves quick girls so in every aspect of it, just breathe it all in. Soon enough your countdown will say 1 day and it will be your time to shine.
Congrats to you and enjoy 2008.
