To the ladies of 2009....With love the 08'ers!!!!

Original post by Mrs. V 2008

Ok since 2008 is almost over…I take this time to write to you girls, the 09’ers!!!! Your year is almost here. In a little over a week you girls will start getting married!!!!!!! I hope we can all give you the best advice and experiences on our day to help with your special day!!!!!!!!

The best advice I can give..

1. Don’t worry about the weather…IT’S THE ONE THING YOU CAN’T CONTOL AND PROBABLY THE LAST THING YOU’LL NOTICE!!! It was crappy on my day, but I was so wrapped up in the emotion of the day, that I could seriously care less about the weather.

2. If its within your budget..GET A VIDEOGRAPHER! I was so happy we did! As much as you think you’ll “take it all in” unfortunately the day goes very fast and there are things you will miss and things that will go unnoticed!

3. Spend some alone time with your new husband! After all it’s your big day and the one reason you threw the wedding in the first place. We did this during the beginning of cocktail hour and we were so happy we did. It really gave us a chance to connect as husband and wife and just made the day that much more special.

4. Don’t sweat the small stuff…Its not worth it anyway. What’s most important is that you are marrying the one true love of your life. After the wedding..what matters is YOUR MARRIAGE..not what went wrong the day of.

5. Take it all in! The day goes so fast! So just stop for a minute to take everything around you in. Its really nice to see how all of your planning comes together!

6. Understand that you probably already have or will find out who your true friends are.(unfortunately a wedding brings out a side in people you may have never seen).

7. Don't worry about things going wrong! You can't control them, and thats not whats important anyway. I was a stressed mess the week of my wedding (a bad car accident helped that) but I wish I would have relaxed more and enjoyed the last few days leading up to my wedding day. So take time the last few days before your wedding to relax and really enjoy the anticipation (that in a few days, you will be getting married)!!!!!

Girls its almost your year………..So ENJOY EVERY MINUTE OF IT! Believe it or not. It will seriously fly..and you’ll wake up to the morning of your wedding! I cannot wait to see you on the newlywed board! Congrats!!!!

Re: To the ladies of 2009....With love the 08'ers!!!!

wow this year went so fast. i am so happy for you ladies

the most important piece of advice i can give is don't try to please everybody because you won't. there will always be somebody that has something to say. as long as you & your DH are happy that is what counts...

double check everything. the bridal salon where i got my dress almost ordered the wrong one!! i double checked the style number on the receipt vs the one i wrote down & it was wrong. make sure you read everything in the contract & question everything. don't worry about being annoying. you have every right to be since you are paying alot of money.

i can't stress this enough. break in your shoes! i didn't have enough time to & my feet were killing me by the time we got to the RH.

personally, if you have the time take the week before your wedding off. even if you have everything done. for me it was a very emotional week. also, i had alot of OOT guests & some last minute running around to do, packing etc. treat yourself to some pampering.

Finally, enjoy every minute of it!! try & get most of your pictures out of the way so you can enjoy the reception.

Congratulations

Re: To the ladies of 2009....With love the 08'ers!!!!

Good luck to the upcoming brides of '09! Here's my 2 cents:

-Dont worry about the weather. I had a very cold, beautiful day. For you winter brides, who cares how cold it is, get out there and make sure to take some outside pics. You will warm up when you go inside. Trust me, you will be glad you have outside pics, with natural light. Its only 1 day, suck it up and be cold for a few mins

-Dont be afraid to get emotional: I am normally a ROCK, dont show emotion much, rarely cry. I didnt want to mess up my makeup either. I was 110% fine leading up to my big day, and even all day long...., until I heard the organ and the doors opened, and I walked down the aisle with my brother. I certainly teared up a bit. And also choked up a bit saying my vows.

-Eat the food: so many couples never even get a chance to eat the food you are paying all this $$ for. EAT IT! I made sure to sample some from cocktail hour and 2 entrees at dinner, and the food was great!

Go to your cocktail hour: This was a great decision, to say our hellos, so we would have more time to dance and get crazy at the reception. We also wanted to hear the acoustic guitarist we hired.

Take dance lessons if you can afford to: We didnt wanna 'rock' back n forth. We took 6 dance lessons, and our 1st dance was AWESOME. Also, we didnt tell anyone we were taking them, so it was a huge surprise when we got out there, and killed it! The dance was beautiful, and was timed perfectly, right down to the dip at the very end of the song. People went nuts... we both also enjoyed taking the lessons, esp DH.

Communicate what you want to your vendors: This may be odd, but I brought pics of everything I wanted to each vendor, instead of trying to convey what I was looking for. I found the cake I wanted, brought the pic to the baker, he made the cake perfectly. I knew what type of dress I wanted, I brought a few pics with me to the bridal stores, so they didnt pull dresses that they wanted. Brought 10 pics to the florist, I said make this for me exactly as it's shown, and they did. Cut out pics from mags and online, keep it in your book. When you go and meet with everyone, show them, that way there is no miscommunication.

Dont listen to everyone's commentary: This is your and DH's day. Do what you want. it's not 'customary' to go to your CH? Who cares. You are worried about dancing with your mom instead? so what, it's your day, and I did, and loved it. Your future 11 y/o niece and their family is throwing a fit that she was not asked to be a FG? No, sorry, you are too old, we will find something else for you to do at church. Your aunt makes comments about not having the chicken dance, and electric slide played? Just forget about all the comments, and suggestions, and dont worry about who you will disappoint. Just do what you and your DH want...

Make a play/do not play list: I met with my DJ 2 days before and we were very very very specific what we wanted played, and what we didnt want. We are big into music, and I had a really long list of what I didnt want played, which alot of the list was 'typical wedding music'. PLease be very clear with your DJ, so you are not disappointed with the music. Our DJ was on point, and understood the type of music we wanted, and did not want.

Add special touches: It took us forever to make our menus. Were they necessary? No, but they looked really nice. We also made our place cards, and table #'s and Unity candle. So many people noticed these little things, and it makes your wedding a little unique, and less 'cookie-cutter'.

I will also agree with what Jessesgirl wrote about taking care of yourself: Get sleep that week of the wedding, and esp before the wedding night. I popped half an AMBIEN, and got a nice 8 hours in. You dont need to be cranky and tired, its a really long day. Also, I wanted to feel the most beautiful I have ever felt this day... I wanted to feel confident and look great, mostly for DH, but also because you are paying serious cash for your photo/video. You will have these pics for the rest of your life. I started hitting the gym on a serious level 1 year before my wedding, right after Thanksgiving 2007. I lost inches, and toned up so much. I always knew I wanted to wear a mermaid dress, and not hitting the gym was NOT AN OPTION.
Also, i know hair and makeup can get expensive. But if you know of someone and you love their work, if you are able to afford it, go for it. Again, you will look at these pics forever, and you want to love how you look. Fortunately I spent way less than $1k on my dress, so I felt I could somewhat splurge on my hair/makeup.

Make your FH help you: Planning this day was very stressful at times, financially and just overhwhelming in general. I live in FL, and planned every single aspect by myself, with minimal help from DH. My mom and aunt beautifully wrapped my favors. I relied alot on the internet and ebay, and this site too. Just when you think its so overwhelming and you dont know where to begin, you will figure it out. Trust me, I did it from 1,500 miles away, and it all worked out perfect. Learn to let some things go. If the shade of your napkins is slightly off, dont fret, no one is gonna notice. Letting stuff like that roll off your back, will be the only way you will survive, or you will drive yourself insane.

And finally... my DOC: She made my wedding flawless. Nothing but great things to say - she was a lifesaver. I was a little unsure what she was really gonna do for me, seeing I had booked all my vendors, did everything myself, but on your wedding day, you really do need an extra pair of experienced hands to make your day run smooth.

Good luck ladies!!!!!

Re: To the ladies of 2009....With love the 08'ers!!!!

All of these ladies have given great advice ... and I am not sure if someone said these things yet, but here are my 2 cents:

1) ENJOY THIS YEAR. Your wedding will come VERY quickly, even if you think it feels like eons away now -- and soon you'll be wishing you could replay the day or do it again (like I wish every day). Just have fun with the planning and savor YOUR YEAR.

2) If you can, wait a week before leaving for your honeymoon. I did it and it was GREAT. I was able to enjoy the day after my wedding - relax and do NOTHING .. go to the bank, pack, and just enjoy being married for a week before rushing off to a honeymoon. (We enjoyed being married on the honeymoon too, but being home and relaxing was nice.)

3) Add touches of YOU to your wedding. Whether it's DIY projects, invites, signature frames, whatever - you will feel great about the fact that your wedding was personalized to YOU and your guests will notice the special touches. I made my own candle centerpieces in a fall theme, donated to a pit bull rescue and adoption org (and had a sign about it in the cocktail hour, on the table with the placecards so people would see it), and put a picture of DH and I with our pit bull in our signature frame. These things made me feel like the wedding was really ABOUT US and what we were to each other, what we loved together and what we shared -- a love of dogs and autumn is just the start -- and it made the day so special. Yes, it would have been anyway - but for people to notice it and say, it was so YOU --- that meant a lot to me. It really made the day a celebration of US.

Congrats to all of you!!!!! Have a terrific year and remember that the wedding is a celebration of a marriage starting -- not just a party. The party's fun, yes - it's fantastic - but it's just the beginning.

Re: To the ladies of 2009....With love the 08'ers!!!!

Wow I can't believe it's about curtain time for '08... It seems like just yesterday we were celebrating the start of our year!

I definitely agree with what's already been said, don't stress the small stuff, seriously it's not worth it in the end... you think it will matter on the big day, that it will be a big deal, but it won't... and honestly, no matter how overwhelming the planning will get (and it will) and how far behind you feel to everyone else on this site, everything WILL somehow work itself out in the end (maybe it's magic ) lol.... you will definitely see some people's true colors during this very arduous process.. the weather is out of your control so make the best of it and if you're doing outdoor pics, have a plan b just in case... stop and look around, enjoy the day as much as your guests are enjoying it, you deserve it after all the hard work you put into it, you can finally relax and sit back... don't leave your DH's side... do whatever makes you happy, not whatever makes others happy, this day is about the start of a new family, the start of you and your DH life together... don't worry about impressing others... don't feel like you need to keep up with what everyone else on here is doing... cry packs, petal cones, etc... believe me, after all the hard work your guests won't even notice, and neither will you... that day will go so fast, you won't even look at any of that stuff, you'll be so busy trying to soak up the whole big picture, it will seriously fly by, if you blink you miss it! Your guests will be doing what all guests do, eating, drinking and partying! you should do the same! they're there to celebrate with you!

If you have a big family and you want family shots, designate someone to round up the clan for pics, you and your DH will not have the time for this.... then when you get your proofs back your aunt gertrude will inevitably comment that she wasn't in the family pic... umm, you were busy stuffing your face at the CH lol...

Congrats and lots of luck to the '09ers, you're up now! To a very beautiful year filled with very beautiful brides! Can't wait to see the pics!

see you on the newlywed board!

Re: To the ladies of 2009....With love the 08'ers!!!!

Hey 09'ers!! It's almost time for you to go crazy like we did . I'm just kidding. Through everything, I think that posting here made my life a whole lot easier!

My advice is, try to be calm! I freaked out so much about little tiny things during my wedding, that I barley remember it. I was so nervous that I was shaking almost the whole ceremony and it made it so that I could only consintrate on my nerves. Try not to stress so much about anything. I barley remember my reception because all I was doing was nit-picking to make sure all my vendors did what was promised. Although my wedding was 100% gorgeous, I wish I had been more relaxed to enjoy it. Trust me, everything will work out no matter the weather, your guests, anything. As long as your FH shows up, your fine!

It's your day! It will be beautiful no matter what. Remeber that it's not just a 'wedding'. It's the first day of your new lives together and the day you give your heart to your FH. It's about love and being loved.

Congradulations ladies!!! and please, don't be shy to post on the 08 board if you need advice because we will all be more than happy to help you out if we can!

Happy planning and HAVE FUN with it!
