To those of you who are musicians as well as brides...

My daughter is considering hiring a harpist for her cocktail hour at Woodbury Country Club. I really would like to keep this as inexpensive as possible as we are spending lots and lots of money on a band with a DJ for the rest of the night. Does anyone know of someone who won't charge professional prices, but is good enough to carry this off? We thought of calling one of the colleges on Long Island and speaking to someone in the music department for possibly a student who would do this. Any other ideas or suggestions would be really be appreciated.
Thank you.

Personally, I think this might be tough. It is not easy to find a good harpist for cheap. And just traveling can be expensive/difficult for them. I would suggest calling local colleges, but your daughter might want to pursue other options as well. I can ask around if you would like.

Prncssrachel, that's a good point. How would you find even a professional harpist? Do you have any idea about how much someone would usually charge? We are totally in the dark and she just thought it would be nice.

Thanks so much for your response.

I would definatly suggest a local college. The students at local colleges train and practice for so many hours a day and are generally very good (I know in my college they usually have to write and conduct their own pieces as their thesis)

Some of them are so excited to be doing such a think so they dont charge a lot.

A friend of ours (I dont know how she pulled this off) got students from Juliard to play at her wedding. She said that was very expensive for her and so much was involved.

But if you check local LI colleges music departments like Adelphi, Hofsta, Stoneybrook, Farmingdale, etc...they should be able to give you more info and maybe you or your daughter can set up some time to hear them play.

Call Five Towns College in Dix Hills - They had an amazing harpist when I was going to school there!
