Today's appointment and one tomorrow too ( a bit long)

Original post by michele31

Well the baby didn't turn- as I already knew just by feeling my belly. But of course they need to confirm it with a photo so they did. The NST at first was all wacky since the baby decided to move left or right every 3 minutes and they couldn't get a good reading but then the midwife gave me ice chips and the baby became very cooperative and happy and responded well.

Our LIW OBs have both helped me a ton and told me I can get a second opinion about the turn since the head of OB at my hospital said No way since I have GD. But I am not sure what to do about that just yet. I will speak to my midwife tomorrow about it. The baby is in a Frank Breech and even the external turn is not very sucessful with these types of babies.
I don't know if I could handle the dissappointment if it didn't work.

The midwife told me that they want to schedule the 'c' word for late next week most likely although nothing is set in stone just yet. And to make matters worse the nurse in the room mentioned to me that any baby born to a GD Mom is taken to the NIC unit asap for monitoring. I told the midwife that unless something is wrong I want to hold the baby first and will not allow them to just start taking the baby after I see him/her for 10 seconds. Of course if something was wrong (which is the procedure in ANY birth) then the baby's health comes first. I also told the midwife NO staples, since I read that women with disposable stitches seem to recover better and I am dealthy afriad of the staples (even though I have heard they do not hurt). She said that is fine and that has been done plenty of time before and it is my choice. I also said my arms cannot be tied down and she said that is also done and okay.
I started to cry though because I just cannot believe that this is happening and I am truly afraid of the surgery- not just a little afraid but I mean terrified of the entire thing, right down to the needle in my back and walking later that day. I just cannot get past this. yes, there are worse things that could happen. yes, this is done everyday. I KNOW all of that. I understand what happens during the surgery. And I beg you please do not tell me to focus on the end result because that just is not helping right now. All I see is an operation, not a birth. I see a cold room full of lights and strangers at one of the most private time in my life. I don't get to say 'Honey, it's time' or make the 'we are on our way' calls or time the contractions or even feel what labor feels like. I asked if I was allowed to labor before the c-section but was told No because the cord could come before the baby and that is VERY bad.

I did a lot of reseach over the past few days and there are many women who feel like I do- that they are not 'whole' and that they missed out the act of giving birth, which is something many looked forward to for a long time. I also know many women don't mind a c-section one bit and it was fine with them. But I don't seem to be able to move my thinking over to that. I am just not sure I can. I did feel better knowing that so many women write about how I feel right now.

Tomorrow:
I have the chiropractor tomorrow at 10am to do a technique that has been known to turn a baby. My midwife said she has had girls who have had success with it so there is hope that it will work BUT I could see her face and she really doesn't believe that the baby will turn at this point. But she did say it has happened and can happen and there is still a chance that it will.

Here is just some info to explain:
There are three types of breech positions:
a) Frank breech: In this position, you find that the baby’s bottom is down with its legs extended up towards the face.
b) Complete breech: In this position, the thighs are flexed at the groin, but the legs are bent at the knees, almost as if the baby were sitting cross-legged.
c) Incomplete breech: In this position, one or more of the feet or knees lies below the level of the buttocks of the baby, making it the part of the baby closest to the mother’s vagina.
From a study that I found and I have been told by midwife also:
Other research has shown that when ECV is tried with a woman who is having her first baby, or when the baby has its legs straight alongside its body (frank breech position), ECV is less likely to be successful.

Anyway, thanks for letting me cry on your shoulders. As always, I appreciate it very much.

Michele, you have me in tears. I cant imagine with the reasons you have the dissapointment you must feel.
I would go on and tell you all about how it doesnt matter HOW baby comes out what matters is that she will join us in this world but I know it wont make you feel better right now.
You still have some time left..Try to relax, upsetting yourself wont get you anywhere.
In a week or so, either way.. your gonna get through it and be a mommy.
Your in my thoughts

Michele, I'm sorry. Perhaps the anticipation of the c-section is really much worse than it really is.
I hope so.
I hope there is someone who went through the same thing so that they can calm your fears and reassure you of that.

I know I've said this to you many times during this entire pregnancy, but I am so sorry that this did not work out the way you had hoped.

I know there's nothing that anyone can say to make you feel better. Your feelings of disappointment are so natural, and I completely understand what you mean about missing the experience that you hoped to have. I wish there was something I could do to change the way this whole pregnancy has gone for you, but I'm not allowed to have those powers But look at it this way - you said you weren't going to call anyone to say, 'it's time' anyway, so no worries there!

Michele, pls. don't worry about your recovery! I know that Scott and your family will be there to help you everyday, and I will do my best to give you as much time as I can! You are going to get through this by leaning on the people that love you. And one day, we will all have a beautiful story about love and sacrifice to share with your precious angel!!!

Michele

I am choked up for you...I know you have taken so much time, energy and research to give your baby the best possible start in life, and it is not happening the way you want it to...you have and are making so many sacrifices for this baby - you should be proud...that is the real definition of 'mother'

I wish I could take away your fear (but i can't since I am so worried for you - I am not good with needles either)...I wish I could take away the disappointment...but that will only happen when the little one comes...

I can tell you that my cousin is a neonatal pediatrician and there is such a love these people have for babies that your baby will be in good hands (although not the best...yours) - and I am hopeful that it is for a short time...

I have been thinking of you constantly and I hope you can find some comfort in that...

Re: Today's appointment and one tomorrow too ( a bit long)

Michele, I can totally sympathize with the way you are feeling...all through the last two months of my pregnancy the dr. kept warning me that there was a very very good chance that I would have a c-section. Ryan never dropped down into my pelvis and the dr. believed he was just too big for my internal structure. He promised he would let me go into labor because sometimes things change at that point, but he wasn't optimistic.

Well, the first time he told me that, I went home and cried because I really felt that I had gone through this whole pregnancy and would not be able to 'finish' it the 'right' way. It was so hard for people to understand what I meant. I wanted to 'give birth' not have the baby taken from me in surgery! I was so nervous about the c-sec. I've never even been in the hospital, much less had major surgery!!

As most of the girls know, in the end, my water broke, but I never dialated past 1 cm. and my cervix never softened. Ryan never dropped down and we had to have the c-sec. At that point, all I was worried about was the health of my baby. The c-sec was truly not as bad as I had made it out to be in my head, and neither was the recovery. No, it was not the birth I pictured, and yes, sometimes I still feel like maybe I 'missed' something. But you know what, Ryan is here with me and we were both safe and healthy and that's all that matters. Sometimes things just don't go the way we plan. I don't feel 'empty' - I just have a different labor story than most women I know - and believe me, it's just as good! But I totally totally understand what you mean, believe me, I was there.

If you have any questions about the c-sec proceedure (I didn't have staples, my arms were tied down, etc.) Please Please Please feel free to FM me - I'll be happy to share my experience with you.

Please continue to hope for the best, but make sure you are prepared for the c-sec. Believe me, in the end, I was glad I was prepared for it rather than taken by surprise by the whole thing. Big to you and the baby!! Feel good and try to enjoy these last moments of your pregnancy and think forward to the beautiful moment coming to you soon - no matter how it happens, it is still miraculous and still a wonderful experience for you and your hubby!!! Trust me!!

Re: Today's appointment and one tomorrow too ( a bit long)

Michele I had an emergency c-section and I really didn't want one either. It was scary, the worst part for me was the lack of feeling in my legs, I felt like I had no control over them and that I would fall. But as soon as I saw Damien all was forgotten, I swear!!! I didn't find the recovery to be that bad and you do get extra time in the hospital which is nice because you have constant care. Not to be too grafic but the first time after having Damien that i had to umm poop, I was pretty thankful I had a c-section, because I know that would have hurt They do not cut through your muscles( I thought they did also but I asked and they said no they do not) I'm not going to lie my scar does still hurt sometimes, but I take Advil and its fine. I must admit if I do have another one I think I will probably just schedule a section. (I did go into labor first so that has a lot to do with my decision also). With GD I had it too and after I got to kiss Damien I didn't get to hold him till 7:30 and I couldn't nurse him until 9:30 after I had him at 3:24. They had to check his blood sugars out first. He did just fine with the nursing. Latched on right away and is still going strong, so try not to worry about that. In the end you will have a beautiful baby and while you won't forget, it really won't phase you

Re: Today's appointment and one tomorrow too ( a bit long)

Again you gals are coming thru for me. I went to the chiropractor today and I was told that out of 1000 women, only 14 had babies that didn't turn using this pressure point adjustment. It was a bit on the hurty side for like 30 seconds but I was okay (I used my breathing ) I have 2 more appointment since he said some girls need more than one adjustment to make it work out but my fingers are crossed. If by Tuesday the baby is still breech then I will just have to deal with it all.

Claud- you will still owe me my donut but only a few days later Don't think pain will make me forget about my jelly donut

i am joining the chorus of gals who wish you the best. hold Scotts hand, hold onto his words, and relish in the sound of your child's first cry.
I am terrified of surgery as well...and had a V birth with Julianne...so I wish a calm to surround you and your Guardian Angel to help you.. ( corny i know but hey- that's who I am!)
