We got engaged in Jan, and are thinking about getting married on 9-10-11. Do you guys think it's too early to start planning? I was thinking since it's somewhat 'cheaper' because of the economy, I could get a better deal. What do you think?

It's definitely not too early. There are tons of 2010 brides on this site that are well into planning already

First congrats! Its never too early to start planning. I was planning Jan 08 for a April 09 wedding.
This allows you more time to shop around and more time to enjoy the planning process.

nope its not too early - we are getting married july 2011 and we already have rh, church, dj and are meeting with the photo/video tuesday..... you would be surprised we had to change our date cause the date we wanted was already taken at the rh!!!! so go ahead and start planning!

If you start now you can lock in 2009 rates and get the majority of the planning out of the way. Check out the 2011 thread

You can definitely start planning, you should lock in 2009 rates, they will only go up next year.

The answer is Yes, sorta :)
Its not too early to book a hall, DJ, hose of worship, photog etc.
IMHO do NOT start looking for a dress, or BM dresses or small things like that. The reason is you will change your mind....or even better you might have buyers remorse.
There was a girl on here not too long ago who said she got engaged and was not getting married for 2 years. She went dress shopping the week after she got engaged and bought a dress that day.
Skip 1 1/2 years later and she was sorry she bought that dress.
Basically, what im saying is your taste will change, your budget will change. Just keep in mind that there IS 2+ years for you to plan your wedding. Dont make some decisions NOW that CAN be made closer to the wedding.
One thing that comes to mind is BM dresses. 2+ years from now style and fashion change. You BM's might change!

its never to early to plan. you can book major vendors a year and a half in advance. RH, florist, DJ, photo/video, transportation - etc. I would wait on the little details though like dresses and design. you will change you mind so many times - just like i have! haha

I don't think it's too early for your main vendors. I've heard that unique dates like 8-8-08 or yours 9-10-11 book quick.

I'd start now just so that you can lock in the cheaper rates. Plus your date may be popular and those dates tend to book fast. I'm a 10/10/10 bride and glad that I started when I did because the dates do fill up fast. I'd just start with the church and the RH for now.

Normally it's not too early. HOWEVER because of the economy, companies are starting to do all sorts of crazy deals and savings. I think if you wait a little, you'll save more money because prices will continue to be slashed. Especially if there aren't as many 2011 brides as there had been in previous years. I think it can work to your advantage.

its never too early.. i have been engaged since April 08 for a June 10 wedding, i have all my major vendors booked now for a few months..

Nope, def not too early. Alot of places are already booking up for 2010.
The only thing i would wait on is asking your bridal party.
Get all your vendors now.

Definitely not too early. You'll get a great chance at choosing your venue and vendors without having to worry that they have already been booked.

Its not too early for research but to actually book I think its way too early. Companies are going out of business every day. I think its too risky.

Its never too early go around tp places slowly and start getting you rquotes work on the RH and where you will be having the cermoney It does go fast

First of all congrats! This is a happy time :)
We also got engaged in January of this year (New Years to be exact). We're getting married in September 2010 and we started planning things right away. Take your time and enjoy planning. Shop around and find the best people that you can find in your budget. It's never too early to start planning. PLUS, when we went to go look at halls one of the places told me that people are booking REALLY early in advanced now because SO many people are getting married. They said that all the baby boomers kids are at the marriage age and that's double what they are used to. I would DEF book your RH and church (if you are having one) but like the limos you can wait on.
