My DH is counting down the time til he can retire.........11 years

LOL. My dad's been there 32 years, he could have retired a long time ago! Although once he retires, he's going to sweep my mother away to Florida so maybe I should be careful what I wish for! LOL

Re: ;-(

maybe you should. How old is your dad?

Re: ;-(

He's 55 and I think he could have retired at 52 or 53. I think he's going to wait a few more years though.

For the past year and a half he was worked 6 days a week, sometimes 7 and it really annoys me.

Before that, probably about 3 years ago now, he was working 7 days a week and about 18 hours a day for about 8-12 months - that's when they restarted the generator on the plant.

Just this week, he was working midnights! Midnights! He hasn't done that in years - it's such a strain on the body.

And you know how those shifts are! He works 6 am to 6 pm. most days.

I don't know, I just think he's too old for this job now, you know. Too much stress on the mind and body. I'd like to see him retired and fishing - Con Ed was not an easy place to work all these years.

ETA: He doesn't complain about it, I do. I just hate to see him drag around exhauted sometimes.

He only got home from the 'strike' at 5 p.m. today. They wouldn't let the managers leave the plants until every paper was signed. He thought he'd be home and hour after the strike was over and ended up having to stay all day. He was up from Saturday morning at 5 am until about 6 p.m tonight.

UGH!!!!

I know my DH tells me that you can retire at 55 with 30 years in the company which is what he'll be in 11 years. He already has 21 years in. What does your dad do?

Re: ;-(

He is a Power Gen Supervisor (or at least I think that's the title). He always likes to say he and his guys make the power - his plant services downtown Manhattan. He's in Brooklyn though.

Re: ;-(

My DH read your last post & he said Power Gen too....lol.

My FIL retired from ConEd & my DH is still there & it is so funny to hear them talk when they are together. My FIL likes to stay up to date on what is going on (& he is 85 years old)

Re: ;-(

The old Con Ed guys never go away! My dad still has a ton of friends that are retired. Guys that were 55 and ready to retire when he was coming into his career his 20's.

It's a good, stable job, but the hours are he!! that's for sure!

Re: ;-(

I agree that it is a good paying (DH makes 3x what I do) and stable job and definately about the hours. My DH has been back on rotating shifts for the past year. He got forced back onto them after he finally had gone on straight days 3 months before our wedding

Re: ;-(

oh no!

Is that this schedule?
3 days @ 7-3
3 days off
3 days @ 3-11
3 days off
3 days @ 11-7
3 days off

My father had then when I was growing up. He was always either sleeping or working when I was a kid! It sucks!

Re: ;-(

no basically it is......

7 straight days of 12-8am

then 2 days off

then 7 straight days of 4-12 midnight

then 2 days off

then 6 days of 8-4 (starting on Sat)

then Fri, Sat, Sun off

then 2 weeks of M-F 8-4

then back to the beginning again!

IT SUCKS!!!!!

Re: ;-(

OMG, it is kind of similar, they must have changed it a bit.

Isn't your DH always trying to reregulate him sleep patterns???? My father would be off those 2 days or 3 days and he'd be up at 2 a.m. watching TV or sleeping at 3 p.m. when I got home from school. I never knew what to expect! My mother had a special calendar with his hours!
JodiBabe Posted:

Re: ;-(

I have to keep my calendar in my pocketbook marked with his schedule. DH has it down to a science how to re-program his body to sleep. The times that he gets thrown off is they change his schedule for for a day or two or he does some OT. He has done OT & not gotten home until almost midnight & then has to be up at 5 to be on the train to be back in for 7:30. UGH!!!!

Re: ;-(

I feel for you, I really do! And for him! Hopefully it will change for him relatively soon and he'll get a normal schedule.

Good night.

That is what we hope for but who knows. It was great to talk to someone that understands. Good night!!!!
