Torn...

Torn...

I had my second interview Friday for that job I was going for. I guess it went well. My recruiter is asking what I thought of it. And I told him yesterday that I wouldn’t take the job for anything under XXX dollar amount. Its $5k more than they told me. The CFO kind of turned me off a little bit and made the job seem like they were just going to be dumping work on me that they didn’t want to do. They seem SEVERLY short staffed. Their company pulls in the same revenue as the company I am in now and we have about 10-15 people just in the acctg department (not counting Accts Payable/Receivable, PR etc) and they only have 4. So I am worried that I will be doing TONS of overtime there (and not getting paid for it, since it is a salaried position)
I just don’t want to go to a job that I have the chance of hating more than the job I do now and being on the phone with my recruiter in 2 years again. I want a job that I can settle in at and stay there for a loonnnng time. I am talking after I have kids and everything.
I don’t know what to do though, because I have to give my recruiter an answer today whether he should try to get me the money I want or not. Oh, that’s the other thing.. it would be a $14K pay raise. I know – huge difference… but money isn’t everything. FH is telling me that I shouldn’t take it, because I keep going back and forth about it. He says I am debating too much, and obviously I am not comfortable with this new place.
I am just worried that an offer like this won’t come up again…
Sorry so long.!… just venting….

ok I say don't take it. In all new jobs there are uncertainties but there are quite a few here. You;re going w your gut with the overtime issue and you;re probably right. Other jobs will come along.

Dont go into a job that you dont like from the start. they usually try to sweet talk the job in interviews. If they are telling you its going to $uck then it will probably be even worse.

People hate change but if you are nervous about taking the job because you think its going to be worse than your current one I would absolutely not take it.

you should always go with your gut feeling but $14k more is a lot of money too...

Re: Torn...

follow gut instinct. You may be able to get another interview and job offer in a few months that offers 14K pay hike and is a place you would LOVE to work at.

This happened to me a few years ago. I was working in Nassau county and interviewed for a firm that was offered me a 12K pay increase. The downside was their location - Hauppage! At the time I was living in Queens (Howard Beach).

The idea of commuting from Queens to Hauppage every single day (and sometimes several times a day because I would cover court appearances in the morning around Queens/Bklyn) was just not an idea I like. The $$ wasn't worth it. I turned the job down a day after I got the offer.

About 3 months later I got the phone call from my current job (in Manhattan) with an increase of $12,500. My decision was a no-brainer. Love where I work now and I am SOO HAPPPY I never took the Hauupage job.

You will see - good things will happen!

hmm thats a hard situation...and yes more money but i wouldnt take it if you dont feel right...i mean unless you feel comfortable taking it...but if you have the feeling you say you do i wouldnt put yourself in that situation to go through worse then what you have now

Go with your gut feeling! I wouldn't take the job. Money isn't worth sacrificing your happiness. Half your life is spent working- it better be something you love and can tolerate.
