Totally off the wedding subject....Tattoo question..

I have been considering getting a tattoo...My cousin just got one (so did her husband and stepdaughter) and now I am more interested. Fi has one and wants a 2nd... I just want a small ankle one..like hearts and flowers, butterflies, something like, but I cant find any that I like or any good websites..they are all big and scary LOL. Does anyone know anyone who has a good site? Or any ideas? I am not 100% sure I am doing it but really considering it..Just scared of the pain!!

remember

the closer to the bone you are - the more it hurts. I have one on my hip and while theres a lot of padding there ;) it still hurt b/c it was near the hip bone. A friend of mine got it on her leg and said it just tickled. If you have a low threshold to pain you may want to reconsider. I brought my own picture and the artist was able to duplicate it no problem...sometimes they will draw one for you also. Also, remember, the ankle is very visible. 8 years later I am happy I can cover mine up...

thank you

I do have a low threshold for pain but I am willing to go through it..I have heard so many, It hurt, it didnt that there is only one way for me to find out. Plus if FI is with me and talking to me, I wont concentrate on it as much. I like the ankle because I can see it and I dont have to worry about it stretching with 'weight' gain...I would love one right on the hip too but with pregnancy, I picture it getting out of shape and never reforming... Is yours below your 'bikini' line on your hip? I might consider that area too because you can cover it... On the ankle, who looks at feet really? I can wear socks and dark stocking cover it too... I am all over the board! I appreciate every thought!! Thanks!

thank you

Mine is an ankle bracelet. I got it six years ago & don't regret it for one minute! I am 31 and work in at corporate office for a major company. I never cover it up and have received several compliments on it. My tattoo artist and I designed it together. he then made the design into a temporary transfer. I wore it for about a week and decided that I loved it. The worst part was when the design was being traced over my ankle bone. OUCH!!!! Good lcuk!

I have one - my thoughts

I have a small tattoo on my lower back (left side). I got it 5 years ago. I love that I don't see it everyday - I think I would hate it if I did. Where it is, its only seen when I want it to be (in a bikini or in low riding pants, etc.) and its not an area that will stretch much with pregnancy. I thought when I got it that I would never tire of it, and I haven't really because I only see it when I want to. I loved the idea of an ankle tatoo, but I'm so glad I didn't get it. Too many times it would be on display when I didn't want it to be. P.S. it did hurt, but wasn't unbearable.

i have two...

i have one on my ankle- a sunflower- which i now hate. i have a japanese symbol meaning 'heart' on my lower back which i love. the thing with the ankle is that you and everyone else can see it most of the time. after time if you grow not to like it or if you don't want some people to know....it's a bad place. the one on my lower back is cute....it looks good with bathing suits....and most of the time i forget it's there! i hate pain...i still want to cry when i go to the dentist....it does hurt but if i could sit through it anyone can!!

hip...

mine is on the side of the hip, away from any pregnancy area. Its almost on the bone itself (probably why it hurt)...my bikini strap depending on how thick will cover it most of the time if I want it to.

Some thoughts in the other direction.

Before you get a tatoo there are a few things you might want to consider. You might want to think how you will feel about this tattoo 20,30 or even 40 years from now.Tattoos are pretty much permanent. While they can be removed it is expensive (not covered by insurance) and there is no guarantee that the laser will not leave some scarring on your body. Tattoos fade even when you have them done by the best and require recoloring, especially if you spend time in the sun. Also your skin does stretch as you age, no matter what you do, even on your ankles and hips. On a more serious note, being tattooed will cause you to test positive for lupus, which can be a fatal disease. It doesn't cause the disease, but you won't know if you are sick or if it is just the tattoo without more involved testing. And not to offend anyone so please don't take this the wrong way, but why would you get a tattoo if you intend to cover it up? Lest you think I have anything against those who have tattoos..I don't.But I speak from experience. My daughter has 9 of them. Some you can see and some you can't and while none are offensive (she has one of Winnie the Pooh) she has been asked by her employer to keep them covered. Whatever you decide if you do get a tattoo, make sure you use a tattoo artist who is licensed and who uses packaged needles that are opened in your presence. Good luck!

I was just curious where you found the information about testing false positive for lupus? Does it raise your ANA count or something? Nancy

Nancy

My fiance is in the medical profession and required to keep up on current medical info. He brought it to my attention a few years ago, due to my daughter's tattoos, when he first read about it in a medical update. When my daughter had sugery two years ago her surgeon told her about it. I have seen it newspaper articles and TV reports about it as well. I don't know the medical end of it at all,(can't ask FH now he went to bed) but I am sure that your doctor would.

Some thoughts in the other direction.

Its not that I got mine in a place so that I could cover it up. But I am glad NOW that I can cover it up easily and the only time people see it is when I am in a more casual setting...beach or with certain pants. Also mine has faded and does not look as good as it did. But I do remember how adamant I was at 19 to get it.

Tattoo question..pain

Just FYI, I have two tatoos, one on the hip area and one on the ankle. THe ankle hurts. There are a lot of nerve endings there and my first one didn't hurt much at all. Be sure to really research your ideas, because you have to live with this design for the rest of your life. Good luck. I've heard that Da Vinci tatoo in Wantaugh is very reputable. Peter Tatoo in W. Hempstead is great, but they have a LOT of attitude there, so if you can stand the egos, Eric is really good.

More thoughts

I saw a girl on the subway who had a tattoo around her big toe. I'm sure it hurt, but it looked very pretty. I guess you have to nice feet :) The one thing that has kept me from getting one over the years is that no matter where you get a tattoo, think what it will look like when your 65. Do some research - look at older women's ankles, for eample, and that will give you an idea what your legs will look like years from now...

Totally off the wedding subject....Tattoo question..

I got my tattoo at Peter tattoo and a few of the artists did have attitude but I''m not one for patience in that area so I picked an artist who was more my speed, he was very patient w/ me and professional. It hurt like he** worst then any cramps, migranes and post surgery pain I ever had. I have a Scorpion on my arm and it has so much detail on it (I could have slapped myself for choosing this one) which was the most pain but the coloring wasn''t painful at all. I''m taking up trip up to Peters this weekend to get two more tattoos, I''m hooked!!

Thanks everyone

I am seriously rethinking the area now. Your completely right- if I dont like it years from now or whatever, I am stuck with it and I wont want to look at it every day. Now I just have to think about if I want one on my hip because thats the only other place I would be brave enough to do it. Thank you!!
