Travel agent question

Travel agent question

So FMIL called me today, she got back from Aruba yesterday. She said our hotel is great, but the Riu is phenomenal. The occidental was less expensive by a good amount if I remember correctly. So I emailed my travel agent to see if we could switch and to get a quote. I went on the Riu website and I can get the same amount of days for only $300 more!! I'm kinda excited, but also scared that I won't be able to change it. Does anyone know the policy about this? Also can I totally cancel everything with the travel agent and do it on my own??

Do you think I can cancel the travel agent all together? We put a $500 deposit to hold the room. I would rather just book through the website...

my moms a travel agent and while you get good deals online....travel agents wk with whole salers so you may want to speak w her and tell her your concerns....esp if it means you will loose your 500$ thats already put down.

I think you would be able to get your $$ back. I would try to find out the hotels policy, THEN call your travel agent. I don't know who you're using but they might try to tell you you can't and then they'll keep the money so if you know the hotels policy you can call them out. KWIM.

ETA: there definitely is a benefit to using a travel agent so like the previous poster mentioned maybe talk to them before cancelling all together.

Who did you book with? I use to be a travel agent with liberty travel. so as long as you are not in any cancelation penalties then they should be able to switch you with no fees. if you are going over a holiday then sometimes there are penalties. if not then you should be okay but check with your travel agent.

travel agents have different policies then hotel policies sometimes. it's whatever the hotel gives the travel agency. the hotel gives them allotments of rooms and expects them to sell them. That's why the penalties are sometimes different.
book with who ever has less restrictions. usually hotels have 48 hour notice where travel agencies have penalties for cancelling 1 to 2 weeks before your traveling date. also sometimes travel agencies charge $50pp to cancel your entire trip. def read you contracts before signing anything.

Good Luck!! You will have a blast if you book at the RIU. I had an awesome stay at the RIU in Cabo San Lucas Mexico!
