Trying to talk you out of marriage?

Has this happened to anyone else? Even if it's meant to be a joke, from certain people (especially strangers or people you don't know well) the 'joke' about the horrors of marriage isn't funny.

I'm at work, and this guy I've met maybe 5 times saw me and said 'when are you getting married?' He knows my dad, so I assume that he told him the good news of the engagement. I told him when, and he then said 'why? You're crazy!' He then asked how long FH and I have been dating (7.5 years) and then launched into a story about how his 'buddy of mine was dating a girl for 10 years, lived with her and everything, bought a houe right before the wedding, went to Disney on their honeymoon, and he couldn't take it anymore and left the second day.' He said 'Why do you need to be married? Why ruin a good thing? Once it's a lifetime committment people get crazy.' I just kept on saying 'I'm not worried.' I mean REALLY? I find it incredibly obnoxious. PEOPLE!

When FH & I got engaged, we got that A LOT...
'OMG You guys are getting married? Why so soon? You sure you want to? You know my friend X got engaged paid $XXX for the wedding and they got divorce in couple of months'
Its liek really? Shut the Eff up and leave us a lone.. Just enjoy this moment for us!

i hear it all the time from married people. they can say whatever they want but i could care less. i know there's ups and downs in marriages and the reason why they jokingly say this is probably b/c of all the downs they've had but i expect it but that doesn't mean i dont want to get married. so annoying though when they say it

Maybe you should criticize him for something he feels strongly about. Why are people so obnoxious? In this society people always brag about how they say what's on their mind and if that bothers the person they are talking to they don't care, blah blah blah.

I'm so tired of people like that...

Is it New York? Are people different in different parts of the country?

This guy I work with talks with me at least once a week and tells me all the reasons not to. Its pretty funny cause he's order and hasn't been married all that long.

I actually haven't experienced that yet. Maybe FH has because he has some friends who were in bad marriages. I really don't know why no one has said anything to me. Maybe it's because I'm 34? Not that the girls on here that are younger are not ready. But I guess maybe people think that because I'm 'old' I know what i'm getting into.

Regardless of age, 'acquaintences' shouldn't be telling YOU that YOUR relationship with FH is going to fail.

This really bothers me!!

That is so annoying. I have had it said jokingly to me but never actually trying to 'talk me out of it'. And usually the people who say this to me are divorced and it's more like 'You positive you wanna go through this?'. Just cause it didn't work out for you doesn't mean the idea of marriage will never work for anyone else.

I haven't really heard it at all

oooohhhhhh i have waited to rant about this since i saw the post this morning..but have been working! lol... so FH and i started dating when we were 15, and 16..and have been together for 8 years....allllllll throughout our dating relationship my co workers (37 and single)(63 divorced) loveeddd saying to me .. your too young to be having a serious relationship..dont u feel like ur missing out on life??? UHM really??? u think im really gunna listen to ur single lonely butt? NO FREAKIN WAYYY... obviously they were so jealoous cuz i have been happy for 8 years...also about the 'missing out on life' crap...uhm no anything i want to experience in life..i get to experience it with my best friend and love of my life...so basically they only thing i cant experience while being in a relationship is other men...and im sorry im not that kind of girl that needs to 'experience' other men, and yes i did have bfs even before FH...so if ur experiencing life is getting with a lot of guys..have fun getting an std or unwanted pregnancy! UGH! my FH works at a gym and allll the guys love to come up to him at the front desk and tell him about their sex lives the night before, gross! and then when they hear he is getting married there always like dude ur soo young and dont u want to party...he always tells them 'shes the one, and i already found her so i dont need to be out there and keep looking' yay FH! lol..and now people love to say the same stuff to me now that im engaged too!...i would NEVER say something like that to someone even if i was thinking it! maybe the fact that these people cant keep there mouth shut and are rude..is a factor to why they r still SINGLE!!.. i never knew what to say when people say that stuff to me but im totally using what u girls said up there! ^...also i know many highschool sweethearts who are still together and happy... ex: my mom and dad..met at 15 dating 10 years before getting married and they are still so in love!! anyways i think my blood pressure went up after this! im glad im not alone and im soo glad i have u girls to talk to about this..cuz it really upsets me!! i think im going to be on this site until im in a nursing home! i love u all so much! can we have a 2011 bride reunion one night?? that would be soo fun!!
