ugh I need to vent

Original post by Sandradv121

Fh just informed me this evening that if we don't have a house by the wedding, that we will live at the current house he is in with his parents. Not that I care, but I was really hoping to start our lives together OFFICIALLY on our own, not caring for his parents. I mean it sounds freaking harsh, but he has two older brothers who both have been married forever that could AFFORD to take care of them. Not to mention, we would have to share everything with his parents, kitchen, fridge, etc. I'm kinda brothered by this! Can someone give me some advice I spoke to my dad and he said this was a very bad bad idea. So I dunno what to do?!

Wow yes I agree with everyone else. I'd definitely express to him that you like his parents very much but that it would be too difficult to live with them and you wouldn't feel like you are starting a life together. A starter house is great!!! Isn't every newlywed couple supposed to struggle a littttle bit??

I guess guys have a different read on things because while I don't know you're whole situation I have told Colleen that I do not want to rent a place, so if it comes down to it I'd rather live with my/her parents for 2-3 months while we pool money for a down payment on a house/condo/coop..... If it wasnt for the money I wouldnt think this way though....

is he against renting too? a while back when FH and i were looking at places and couldnt find anything he suggested this as an alternative. i was against it. i said no. and i dont think he could understand it. all he saw was a way to save money.... i told him lets think about it to cool off

finally we revisited the topic a few days later, and i really broke it down with how i felt. i talked alot about my feelings and i tried to make it sound as logical as i could.

im not sure he still 100% gets it...but he saw how much it was making me feel bad....so we agreed that is no longer an option.

if you want ideas on talking points, FM me. id rather not have them here for the world to see.....

I totally understand where you are coming from...Shawn lives with his parents again and just by me staying over two/three nights a week that puts a strain on us...And thats only a few nights, can you imagine if it was for months on end??!! I dont think we could make it past it.

Definately try talking to FH, be totally honest (but not brutally honest, that might open up an argument) and tell him your concerns...
He was willing to listen you you a few weeks ago when he made that comment about you...So he should be willing to listen to you know...

Good luck!

It definitely is a sticky situation. I understand both sides to the story. Of course you want a house, but there always has to be a compromise. You definitely need to have a convo about this.....the best thing I learned in trying to win an agrument, is never say 'i' , always say 'we' or 'us'....so explain to him how this will affect your relationship and the potential damage to it. Good luck!!!!

We were in the same boat as the two of you. We rented a small place for awhile........saved,saved,saved, scrimped, scrimped, scrimped, until we had enough to buy what we wanted. That was years ago NOW, we are looking for our 2nd place. A small cabin up-state somewhere. It is a pain in the arase to scrimp & save, HOWEVER.........the rewards are wonderful. You really can never go wrong with real estate. Anything you buy is an investment. Don't dispair.

So, we spoke about it, and it is a money thing... and I told him how bad this will be for us... he doesn't get it :( I think I may need to call in for reenforcements... I didn't want too, but he really is now going to cause a war to end all wars b/w us.

Should I let my dad have a man to man with him? What about his older brothers? Like I said, he's really not listening to me, and I think if he talks to someone who lived it, than he would understand....

Hi I'm crashing....I don't really know your family dynamics so I'm sure whther involving his brothers or your dad would be helpful.

I can totally understand why you do not want this living situation, and think you are 100% in the right!

If YOU are telling him this is something that you don't like the idea of that should be enough IMO.

Maybe give him some time to see that you are really not into the idea before involving other family members (that may make it worse, ya know?)

Over the next cple weeks examples of WHY lving with his parents would be bad WILL present themselves...use each one to help him see the big picture

I hope this works out WITHOUT a war

Re: ugh I need to vent

don't do it!!!!!

coming from experience you need to talk to your FH seriously about this.

currently FH & I live downstairs from my parents. its a 2 family house & we have our own kitchen, bathroom, etc. but the boundaries are invisable.

they know everything. if we have friends over, what time our friends leave, how long we are in the shower.
to make things worse we know everything about them. when they are arguing with my sister, when my mom is babysitting my nephew & nieces, when the dog doesn't sleep & cries all night.

but the worst part of all is that there dinning room is directly above our bedroom, they don't have an eat in kitchen so if my dad gets up at 5am to get ready for work we hear him. & some night my sister doesn't get home from school until after 10pm & she goes right into the dinning room & has a full conversation over me, trying to sleep because i have to be up at 6am.

FH & i have purchased numerous items so they will actually use their living room more & it never works.

it puts a strain on our relationship & it is the only thing we argue about. i don't thank having someone else talk to your FH is going to work, you have to do it. he is no longer the guy u r seeing, he is going to be your husband & u need to be open with him about this. if he still doesn't budge i hate to say it but u may need to start an argument with him.
