Just got an email from my boss, sent to the whole (remaining) office, notifying us of an afternoon meeting.
Since it's not an individual invite into the office, I'm not expecting a mass firing...unless of course we're going under.
I'm really expecting this to be a rah rah we need to step up to the plate and work harder and longer for no additional pay kind of meeting.
Happy Birthday!
Don't get me wrong, I'm extremely grateful that I still have my job, but it's getting really frustrating that I was promised the moon the sun and the stars when I started, and after I accepted my entire compensation deal was changed from the initial interview, and I definitely feel taken advantage of. I really wish it was a different climate out there. I was the absolute top of my class, it wasn't supposed to turn out this way

Re: UGH Nervous
I think alot of us feel the same and like you said you should just be thankful to have a job .. if the ecomony was better we could look, but we dont have that opiton.
I think companies are also taking advantage of us because of the economic situation and using it as an excuse to take away perks and tell us to work harder, but you just cant complain ... it will get better soon.

I'm sure it'll be a morale-booster type of meeting. I think a lot of us are thankful that we still have jobs. Unfortunately right now, it's an employer's market and we the poor little serfs have no choice but to s uck it up and go to work every day. I'm sure in a couple of years when the economy turns around (fingers crossed here) that it will change again, and we will all have the pick of the litter as far as jobs go.

Good luck at the meeting!!! I know how you feel. I was like that last year wondering if 'today' was my last day. I worked for a mortgage company and the day did come. I have been out of work for almost a year but I seem to be doing ok. I hope things turn out better for you!!

Re: UGH Nervous
Well, I'm severely depressed, but still gainfully employed, so that's good at least.
Basically it was a little explanation of the layoffs last week, and we were told that we're now as bare bones as we can get without suffering. So in that sense, theoretically, we're all safe. UNLESS things just start plummetting uncontrollably, and then it may need to be reevaluated, but we're currently at the 'optimal level of quality' with the employees that are still here, and if anything changes it will affect the quality more than the quantity.
So time to win the lotto or start selling my body.

Re: UGH Nervous
I think in this economy, it doesn't matter what your GPA was or where you went to college. . .if you're seen as expendable, then POOF! you're gone. FH went to one of the best schools in the COUNTRY for music and music education (Peabody Conservatory, attached to Johns Hopkins in Baltimore). . .had something ridiculous like a 3.9 GPA. Well, that doesn't matter in this economy to his employer. . .because they're most likely eliminating his position along with 10 other music positions in his district if the budget doesn't pass. It doesn't matter that his working class students with no private lessons (okay, maybe a handful, but certainly not at Three Village, Syosset or HHH percentages) received the highest distinction possible on the most challenging string orchestra repertoire out there TWO YEARS IN A ROW. . .because he's JUST a music teacher, so it doesn't matter! If the district wants to cut the position, all of the postering (is that the right word?) about where he went to school and what acolades he's received in his short career don't matter to his district ONE BIT. It will matter when he looks for another (better!!!!) job over the next couple of months for September 2009, but not now while Pat-Med is planning on making cuts. Where you went to school and how well you did in school matters when you're looking for a job, but after that--not one crumb. He went to better schools musically (Peabody/JH and finishing up a Boston U online masters program) and had better GPAs than I did (I went to SUNY Geneseo and Queens), but I'm the one with the stable job. In this economy, NONE OF THAT MATTERS anymore, and that's REALLY a crying shame.
But I'm glad you didn't lose your job!!!! This economy just royally pisses me off.
