I am starting a doctoral program in January, and went to meet with my advisor today to pick classes for registration. I asked her if I should list my married name or my maiden name, since I will be getting married on Saturday, and my records will all be in my married name next semester....her 'advice' was that i shouldn't change my name at all because I might end up divorced!!! Who says that to someone about to get married?!?!

Actually, lots of people say things like that. For some reason everyone feels compelled to give their opinion whether or not you ask for it. In this case, you kind of did ask for her opinion although I'm sure you did not expect the cynicism. Ignore her. You can always update you records once you have changed your name officially. It does not have to be done now so long as your degree reads like you want

Re: Unbelievable...
Although I agree that you should use your maiden name, I don't agree with her comment at all. I would keep it as your maiden name because their degrees and they should IMHO match your HS diplima. My FH and I had a fight about it. But since I'm going for psychology and wish to become a sex therapist I want to be Dr. C not Dr. M. Thats just my wishes. You could always use your married name for your pts, but its always good to have your paper work in one name.

Re: Unbelievable...
I keep hearing sh** like that. I make sure to quote divorce statistics right back at those people, and then in a very sarcastic voice let them know that I'm on top of it.

Re: Unbelievable...
What a jerk! My FSIL kept her maiden name and will change it after she graduates. I think this means that she will incurr exenses that she wouldn't have otherwise due to the time delay but she felt it was easier to have her school records under one name. Tho they have that little line for alt name records are under....do what you want and ignore ppl like your advisor.

Re: Unbelievable...
I'm sorry... i know this isn't funny, but it's just so unbelievable that someone would say that, that it kind of makes it funny. Wow... she's optimistic huh? What did you say? I think i would have sat there in shock.
