I wish I could say you must be kidding, but I know I have heard the same thing and so has my fi from people. It really is unbelievable what comes out of some peoples mouth.

That is horrible, some people just don't think before they speak. I was told that my dh's stepmother asked a friend of mine at my rehersal dinner if she thought our marriage was going to last because of our ages, keeping in mind I am 26 and he is 27.....I was just a tad bit furious!

She shouldn't have said it, but I am keeping my maiden name for my doctoral work and at work. I decided I wanted all my degrees to match (I have the bachelor's and master's on the wall of my office), plus now all my published research from master's and doctorate will be under one name if anyone searches the academic journals. It's pessimistic, but I kind of see her point--it's all about what is published, and that gets complicated if you ever change your name and your published articles are under something different. There have already been 3 divorces in a cohort of 10 in my doctoral program, and they'll probably tell you day 1 there are increased rates of divorce, alcoholism, drug abuse, and weight gain in students enrolled in doctoral programs. Why are we doing this again?
