I'm not exactly sure on this. I believe that there would obviously be another candle lit at the altar. I would ask the church because I think they all have different ways of doing it.

What I have seen in most unity candle ceremonies there is a candle lit on the alter , that is not either of the candles the mothers are lighting. This is what i've in church weddings. Hope that helps

Are you talking about the Catholic Church? I've been to many weddings and have never seen the Mothers light the candle....only the bride and groom....

I was wondering this myself the other day. I think I will have a regular candle somewhere on the side for them to use. Maybe I'll decorate with some candles so it doesn't look weird with only 1 candle lite.

I have only seen the unity candle lit in a church ceremony. There are other candles on the altar that the flame is taken from.

my brother and sister-in-law did this and during a ceremony performed in a gazebo and it was very touching and beautiful. the moms lit their candles from a candle that was lit first by their officiant... ive also seen it done from a candle that was lit throughout the entire ceremony in the church.
