can anyone fill me in on the meaning behind them? I am having a Catholic ceremony at my RH (not in a church). The priest that we are using suggested we light a unity candle during the ceremony. Is this a Catholic tradition or something symbolic that be used at any type of ceremony?

Re: unity candles?
At Baptism you're parents are given a candle to symbolize that light of Christ in your life. Now you are combining your candle with that of your husband's in which you will be united and have Christ as the center of your life.
You're having a Catholic ceremony outside of the church?? That's unusual. In the US its not customary to have a Catholic ceremony outside of the church.

Re: unity candles?
This is what I found online:
The Unity candle that is lit by the bride and groom often symbolizes their separate lives being joined together, thus extinguishing the separate lights of the side candles and the combining to light the single large center candle.
