UPDATE: Need advice: My sister walked out on my wedding. Long....

Please tell me what you would do....

Simply put: My sister is a DRAMA QUEEN. She MUST be the center of attention at all times. She is also a compulsive liar. You cannot believe anything that comes out of her mouth. This is also my only sibling.

I knew she'd pull SOMETHING on my day but I wasn't sure what. At my father's wedding, she showed up over 3 hours late (she was 'protesting' the marriage), wearing next to nothing (Did I mention she's a stripper?) She missed the ceremony, which broke my father's heart. She wore no makeup, didn't shower & was a total embarrassment. She announced to the table that she wasn't wearing underwear. It was awful.

So here it was, my wedding day. I I had told her I would pay for her hair & makeup (b/c she was complaining she is broke.) She said no. She showed up at the RH TEN MINUTES before photos were to begin. She had obviously not showered or washed her hair & she was wearing a very revealing 'dress', if you could call it that. Her fake boobs were hanging out the sides & she was not wearing a bra. I was HORRIFIED. She was also clearly high as a kite. She had the jitters & was a nervous wreck. It was obvious that she was on coke or something like it which would not be out of the ordinary. Her first stint in rehab was at age 14. She's now 40.

Thank GOD she was a BM so we could dress her in something less embarrassing. My girl's dresses were tea length. But my SISTER had her altered into a fricking minidress. It was about 10 inches above her knee. My BM's did what they could to get her hair & makeup done and make her presentable.

We went for our formal pictures & she was a jittery mess. We put her (& her short dress) in the back for all the pictures & she was screaming 'no one will see me back here! I'm the sister! I need to be seen!' She also kept SCREAMING that she needed a cigarette. It was to the point where the photographer had to tell her to stop talking b/c she was ruining the pictures. She also wore her huge F*ck Me pumps ONTO the beach for pictures. HELLO - you are standing in SAND (in your minidress). We all told her to take her shoes off & she refused. She was too busy grinding her teeth & begging anyone for 'a smoke'. Classy.

So now its time for the ceremony. She is standing up there and she starts to cry. I was touched. 'Maybe she DOES have a heart' I thought. Boy was I wrong.

She started to sob. Then started the snot-snobbing. Literally. I am trying to get married & she is wailing. My BM's were looking at me with HUGE eyes. One was patting her on the back. It was almost funny but it wasn't.

So the ceremony ends, we walk back down the aisle, into the bride's lounge to bustle my dress & my sister is SNORTING & sobbing hysterically. She starts saying 'I just can't stop CRYING' then launches into a speech about how sh!tty her life is & how marrying her ex-husband was the worst thing she ever did & how she is so worried for me b/c 'marriage will ruin your life!' AT MY WEDDING!!!! IN THE BRIDALLOUNGE! Keyword: Bridal !!!

I walked out of that room & never looked back. Apparently she kept crying & sobbing. She was walking around at the cocktail hour telling her sob story to anyone who would listen. Her story of course kept changing b/c she is a LIAR. She turned it into 'look at this perfect wedding. Everything about Caroline is perfect. My parents never gave me a wedding like this!' Um, Beth honey??? YOU HAD 2 WEDDINGS. Two. And dad paid for both of them. And your divorces. So shut up.

Finally, my MOH told her she was 'a disgrace' and to get it together or leave. Well, she left. She told my mom she needed to 'go for a drive'.

About an hour later, the Maitre'D (WHO WAS AMAZING) told me 'your sister came back to gather her things & she has left.' I felt a rush of relief.

At my after party, she was calling my cell phone like a maniac. She must have called 15x. I did not answer, I had nothing to say to her. She called my MOH's cell phone too. My MOH told her again that she was a 'disgrace' and that she embarrassed herself & her family.

Its been almost two weeks and I have not spoken to her since. My father is mad at me & says I need to 'reach out' to her b/c she is 'troubled & depressed' and she 'needs me.' WHATEVER. I don't feel bad for her. She has been on drugs for over 20 years. I am just so DONE with her. She's 40 fricking years old & she has been an attention whore since she was born. I am so sick of her BS. All I wanted was ONE DAY for it to be about me & she tried to steal it. I just can't seem to forgive her. I have no need to ever talk to her again. My father says I am 'cold & heartless.'

Am I really the meanest person ever? What would you do?

UPDATE: So, my father & I just had a huge blowout over my f*cking loser sister. He thinks I am 'punishing' my sister for having problems & that I am irrational for not wanting to speak to her. I said to him 'remember how YOU felt when she pulled that sh!t at your wedding?' He said yes. I said 'now you know how I feel.' Then I kind of went off. Probably not the best move. I told him that I want nothing to do with her until she gets help. He is Furious with me.

But STILL, she totally deserted her only sister on her wedding day, she tried to steal my thunder and she humiliated me in front of my in-laws, (who are ALSO telling me that she needs serious help, which is embarrassing). She drove her car high on drugs (and I lost a BFF to a drunk driver), she made a scene, she said AWFUL things...

Why should I be made to feel badly for her???

ARGH!!!!

I am so sorry. You are not a mean person. I would not contact my sister if I were you. She needs to get herself together and it sounds like right now, she will just be dragging you down. Time for some tough love. Besides you just had a wonderful wedding. Enjoy that for a while. Your sister isn't going anywhere.

please don't feel bad for not wanting to speak to her! i think it's a credit to you that you didn't allow her to ruin your wedding day! she was a disgrace, and if you no longer want her in your life, that is your decision - no one can make that for you. i am sorry she is an addict, but that does not mean that you should be forced to keep her in your life if it makes you miserable. maybe you shutting her out will be the kick in the pants she needs to get her life together.

First let me say that I'm so sorry you had to deal with that behavior on your wedding day. If I were you I would not attempt to reconcile anything just yet. Let her sweat it out and maybe she will realize that her behavior is not reasonable. Sadly, people like that don't generally seem to get it and it's always about them.

Wow, that is truly something. I do not think you are cold and heartless at all. I can't imagine how I would feel either. Give yourself time to cool off and then re-assess some time down the line. If you reached out to her now, while you are still so angry, it probably won't be that productive of a reaching, possibly more of a punching. As an aside, the way you phrase things cracks me up!

Hang in there!

wow i remember you posting this story way back when and how worried you were about having her in your wedding party.
Wow is all i can say, i am so sorry you had to deal with this on your day

You aren't cold and heartless. I am sorry you are dealing with this.

She may be sad and depressed but she has to pick herself up and not rely on others to do it. So much of your story sounded familiar to me, I have an alcoholic sister too, the stories she comes up with are unreal and change by the minute because it's all a delusion.

Don't feel bad about yourself because you won't allow her to drag you down into her world - it takes a lot of strength to say no to your own sister, but sometimes you have to do just that.

I'm really glad you didn' let her spoil your day.

Wow! I'm so sorry you had to deal with that on your wedding day. You are in no way heartless. Your sister sounds like she needs serious help, but there's only so much you can do. She has to get it for herself.

You are not the meanest person in the world. Should your father say that to you again remind him of how he felt when she pulled her little act at his wedding. If he knows she is 'troubled & depressed' and she 'needs me' tell him she also needs him for help because he is her father. This was your special day and I am glad for you that she left when she did. I hope you managed to salvage some of your wedding day.

I'm going to take a different approach with my response. I completely understand why you are angry and do not want to speak to her. She attempted to ruin your wedding day and has poured her problems on you a number of times. However, she needs someone. I dealt with an alcoholic once who didn't care about anyone but himself. He did what he wanted when he wanted how he wanted and didn't care if it affected anyone else, let alone if it did so in a negative way. But after some careful treading, I realized it's because everyone was so fed up with his antics that they didn't take the time to help him in the way he needed to be helped. I took the time to make him see his life was worth so much more and that he should waste it away on a case of beer. I made him realize he could be the kind of guy he wanted to be. And today, he is. He is simply amazing. I tell this story not to toot my own horn, but to raise the suggestion that someone truly take the time to do the same for your sister. I hope it all works out and I am so sorry you have to go through this.

Wowies, that ***** she has my name Ok sorry, to the real issue here, she has a major problem. And if you are saying its been this way for years, well then only she can help her self. But not unti she wants the help. If she doesn't than no one can help her. You are not cold hearted at all, you are just simply over it. And I don't blame you. She is your blood but how many times can she hurt you and your family and get away with it. Just let it go for now and wait to see if she will help herself. I am sorry to hear this went down on your wedding day.

First of all, you had a GORGEOUS wedding and I'm happy you didn't let her ruin your day!!!!!

I'm sorry you're going through this, but I really think it's VERY inappropriate of your father to say that YOU are the mean one and that YOU need to reach out to her! Um, no. Your sister f*d up, AGAIN, and that's that. Maybe she should reach out to you and apologize, did he think of that?

Yes, she has problems. But you've been dealing with it for so long, you can only take so much.

I don't think you're being mean at all. If you later somehow find it within you to forgive her, then great. But that still doesn't mean you have to reach out to her!

You are not mean and you are not wrong for feeling the way you do. I would have felt the same way and probably would never speak to her again, but again that is me. See how you feel in a few weeks, months or whatever makes you comfortable and then decide if you want her in your life or not.

Please don't feel bad. I am so sorry that you had to go through that on your wedding day. To your credit, you handled it very well and didn't let it ruin your day.

She's had a problem for a long time and there is only so much other people can do for her. She needs to pick herself up and clean up her own life. You can't do that for her. Tough love is hard, but sometimes it's the best thing because when people feel like they have a net they have a tendency to revert back to bad habits.

You are not awful at all!!!!!!!!!!! I can't believe that you family think that you need to reach out to her........... She needs to be the one to say sorry to you......and I guess until then I wouldn't bother......(oh-boy is that too harsh) OOPS.......

That's a hard one.
I don't think you are the meanest person ever. You're just fed up.
On your day, your sister should have been mature enough to pull her act together and act like a lady.

From this 40 year old to your 40 year old sis, enough is enough. No one wants to hear you cry the same sob story over and over. It just makes you look pathetic.

Kudos to you for even having her in your BP knowing what her behavior is like.

It is your decision whether or not you want to keep a relationship with your sis. Woudl you damage your relationship with your dad if you didn't ? What is more important to you ?

My are with you.

Thank you. I agree... I think she owes me an apology.

My dad says that she did 'the right thing' by leaving. If she had stayed, I guess it probably would have been worse but STILL. She is my ONLY sister & she wasn't there for me on my wedding day.

I do not think you are a horrible person and I don't believe that you should have to reach out to her.

Bottom line is that she is an adult and should take responsibility for her choices (both good and bad) She owes you an apology.

It's tough b/c she's family. I am in a similar situation and the hardest thing was deciding that I could not change the person- they have to change and want to change themselves. It is very tough.

My heart goes out to you and I am so sorry she tried to ruin your special day.

I'm so sorry she did that to you. You're right to be upset. Some people are just like that. I know that your father is only trying to do what he thinks is right, but that doesn't make it easy. My sister is also rather attention seeking and had me in tears when she gave me grief about the BM dresses. I told her that she didn't have to be my MOH, that I'd rather have my best friend who is like a sister to me. That caused my mom (who is an absolute angel and would do anything for either of us) to tell me she would boycott my wedding if my sister wasn't MOH. You can never forget what is said or done, you can just try to see the good in people and forgive.
