Hobnestly, I think it would insult your FH asking for an upgrade. I would wait for an anniversary.

Re: Upgrading rings?
Eventually, maybe after we have kids, I plan on getting a bigger stone and using the stone I have now as a side stone. So that will be our past, then we have the larger stone, that will be the present, and I'm getting another one to match the side stone, that will be our future (with kids and all).

If you think he might get insulted, then don't ask. You wouldn't want to insult him, right? You will have many years ahead of you and many occasions to 'request' an upgrade IMO Just enjoy being engaged and planning your wedding

Re: Upgrading rings?
i dont plan on ever changing my ring, i am keeping it like this, i cant change the ring Dh proposed with. Even if DH brought this up i would say no
Usually upgrades ive heard of getting it on an anniversary, and a later one such as 10 year anniversary or something like that. many times even a later anniversary
I definitely can see how a guy would feel insulted.

Re: Upgrading rings?
if teh tables were turned i would be completely insulted. my mom upgraded her ring on her 25th anniversary but that was because my dad offered. i think that would be the only way i would do it and i would def keep the stone i have. its not about the size of the stone for me...its the meaning behind it

i would also wait until an anniversary. I love my e-ring, but I would love an anniversary ring maybe a few years after marriage. but u know your FH best, so maybe being honest about the situation won't insult him.

I don't think i could ever change my engagement ring... if you feel that he would get offended then he probably would... I would at least wait until after the wedding... maybe like 5 year anniversary or something ...

Me too. I have a one carat solitaire which is nice enough but sometimes I wish it was bigger. I won't upgrade because the ring has a lot of sentimental value and I don't want FH to think that what he could afford is not good enough for me.

Re: Upgrading rings?
Personally, I want to keep my ring the way it is. I think my FH put a lot of thought into it and feel it's perfect the way it is. However (!) I do know someone who upgraded her ring after only 6 months of being engaged. I don't know how her FH took this, but most everyone else thought it was hurtful and insulting to FH. I don't know her really from a personal standpoint (we worked together) but to each her own.
Maybe you should talk to FH about it to see how he'd feel? Bring it up lightly...
Or, my FH actually had a good suggestion - why not get a more elaborate wedding band to complement your engagement ring, then upgrade on your 5th anniversary or like the other poster said, if you have kids.
Good luck! i'm sure you'll make the best decision for you both!
