I am really upset right now- I just found out that Jake will need Neck surgey to repair nerve damaged and 3 crushed vertebrate that he suffered in a car accident 18 months ago
he is always in pain and I hate to see him live like that- but I am worried that if some goes wrong he could be paralyzed
I wish I went to the doctor with him- I feel like he doesn't ask the rights questions- they are going to run more tests tomorrow
Ok- - update I feel better- he is seeing the head of spinal injuriues at Stoney Brook Universary- thisis his 6th opinion and mostly likely the one we will go with
Jake got a very hig tech MRI done yesterday and they saw something very wrong- at first glance it looks like his vertbrate may have been chiped/broken (or it could be bone spruts) - during the accident and then healed wrong b/c no one noticed before- today they are giving him another test today that there normally is a 2 week waiting period for- but b/c of his condition they got him in the next day-
so far we don't 100% know if he will need the surgrey - but it looks like that is going to be the only opntion- the bone growth is pushing on his nerves and can cause paralysis if left untreated- he can't lift anything over 10 lbs-
I am worried but I also feel that he is finally going to be fixed and we can get on with our lives- the last 1.5 years have rolved around doctors, pain killers and days that his neck hurt so much he couldn't get out of bed- it really isn't fair for him- he was SOOOO active before- and he had to stop doing things he longs like snowboarding and ulitmate fighter style fights-
thank you all for listening

I am really sorry, bit I think that you should go with him to the doctor & also get 2nd & 3rd opinions.
This is very serious & I would try all alternatives first. GOOD LUCK

I agree with this. Is this the only doctor he has seen? With something this serious I would definitely get more opinions. I would also try something like acupuncture before surgery.

no this is the 4th or 5th doctor- he has tried everything - including acupencture-nothing has helped
they just re did the MRI's and discovered more damage
he is at Stony Brook medical center- but I want him to get 1 more opinion from the Hospital of specail surgrey- in the city-

That is a good idea-has he tried a pain management doctor? My FMIL was hit by a car last year & the pain management dr has helped her avoid surgery.

Re: upsetting news
Beth, I worked for a spine specialist for 5 years. surgery should be a last resort. any surgeon worth his salt would try other modalities (depending on what the actual diagnosis is) such as epidural steroid injections and the like. who did he see? I am pretty familiar with the names and reps of most LI spine docs, and I can recommend one to you if you like.
who told him he as 'crushed' vertebrae? that doesn't sound right to me. He should definitely seek a spine specialist, and steer CLEAR of chiropractors, herbalist, acupuncture...that doesn't have when you have compression of the spine and can do more damage. even a general orthopedic should give way to someone with expertise in the spine.
good luck and keep us posted.

Re: upsetting news
pain management was just giving him pain killers- which is lives on
unfortunatley is beyond him just being in pain
I love how the insurance company offered him $20K for a settlement- when someone I know who broke there leg got $200K- notthat any amount of money is going to make me feel better-
(he was a passanger in the car)

pain mgmt docs specialize in epi steroid injections- they can work wonders, but up to a certain point.
depends on what the MRI said....

thank you- I am not sure of his doctors name- but this one has been the best one of the bunch- at first he was going to who his lawyer recommened-
he planned on getting the injections- but they found something new today on the MRI- they are going to run more tests tomorrow and I will know more tomorrow
